Umista said:Our safety play was not as bad as it has looked. But it was not good either. Reasons were some injury issues last season, coaching etc. Look for better by a bunch this coming year. More on this later. Van Ackeren? I have not watched him play. Can not comment.

Tackling was suspect, but if your corners can't cover there is not a safety in the world that will look good.

You don't have to have played the position to recognize bad play.
If you watched ALL of the 2012 games last year the safety play is simple to summarize...Umista said:Our safety play was not as bad as it has looked. But it was not good either. There is a HUGE difference between recognizing a bad play and recognizing WHY it was a bad play.

True. And with pass completions, most people don't know who made the mistake or who got beat. Fans just assume the closest defender to the receiver made the mistake, which frequently is not the case. One often needs to know the coverage call, to figure out who made the mistake. With tackling, a mistake or poor tackle by another player often puts added pressure on the next defender or leaves him slightly out of position.
While safety play was certainly not stellar last season, much of the criticism directed at the safeties was not deserved.
I doubt that 1% of posters have played safety in an organized football game.

I played cornerback, strong safety, weak-side linebacker in college. I'm in the air traffic controllers' club.
