I've been on campus for the last 8 ish years and the reason I see that students don't like the games anymore is because of.all the shit that's happened over the last 3 ish years. This isn't the students team it's an old mans team. I like Delaney but the students don't and the students absolutely hate the direction the team is going. Obviously there are exceptions but it's really hard to get behind a team that drastically changes every year because some f*** tard keeps making coaching and qb changes. People got behind Hauck and chase and lex and colt because those were icons throughout the years but honestly besides Tripp we have no icon on our team. Delaney isn't established as our head coach and probably never will be and as far as I could tell most students absolutely were disgusted from day 1 of the jj situation. I personally interacted with many students who all were familiar with the girl and knew she was crazy. So it's kinda hard to support a team who doesn't support you.

The students love JJ and Tripp. Honestly they are both icons. This stuff used to force fed to the students. People say the hate for msu and they joined. Last years loosing really did hurt the students. However, these students need to feel the passion of griz football that this university has had. I hate the cats with all I have. These students don't really care...it sad. Someone needs to enhance the spirit at the U.

And I agree that jj is a student icon and that's what I'm trying I say that one of the few bright spots we did have had a blemish because the university handled a bad situation even worse

So you're talking about the university, not the team. Right?

Exactly and this isn't our team anymore. The students had 0 say in what happens and that became apparent over the last 3 years.

And to be fair as far as supporting the team I was personally in the student section years ago during our hay day when the student section was packed full from start to finish and the same questions you guys raise about the students were raised by us about why half the stands were empty after half time.

I'm wondering, what do you mean when they have zero say in "what happens"? In regards to what? Can you give me an example of what the students used to have a say in?

Nothin but we never had to have one if that makes sense. But how are we the students supposed to react when an icon of ours is wrongly accused of something and we overwhelmingly support the player yet the fat cat upstairs makes decisions directly contradictory to what most of the students agree is right? The jj scandal blemished the program and I know of at least 5 people off the top of my head who used to go but just don't go anymore because the team isn't relatable. I guess the best way I can put it is that this used to be our team, as in the student, now it's all some guy upstairs team who most of us don't know or never seen.

Haha question it all you want... I'm just pointing out my opinion as someone who was a student when the students were the most representative section and a student when were not. The change in mood towards the football team by the students has undoubtedly changed over the past 3 years and most of the outrage I hear is due to the jj situation and the blatant disrespect to one of our peers regardless of our outcry. Reference the kaimin if you want more proof of what I'm saying but I read it every day...

I asked a student this weekend why the student section was so empty and he gave me basically the same answer mtgrizfankb said about the game not being promoted. He said most students didn't even know there was a home game last weekend.

I don't really understand why, but the students do seem to be disenfranchised from the program. regardless of the reason (missing the playoffs in 2010 and 2012, handling of the JJ issue, lack of advertising budget or whatever) I sure hope the football program doesn't go the same direction basketball has with the students just not caring.

Agreed. I think the students are coming around to baskeyball. They really enjoy coach tinkle. He's a public person seen around campus a lot and our players are exciting and fun. The thing is we never really advertised any game in the past as far as I could remember. It was just mostly talked about. I never recall seeing banners and posters around campus

Well not to split hairs but the students representatives voted unanimously to expel JJ (not so with other students) Of course it didn't happen, but it wasn't the students who stopped it. Bobbys relationship with students including the Kaiman is legendary even made national news. There has been a split going back to the 70's when the "students wanted athletics off the campus and defunded it. The disconnect is no different than any other campus in the country. The only thing more disconnected is the Greek System. FWIW the student attendance is up this year.

I can't really say anything about the representatives other than they were definetely not on the same page as the students. The kaimin posted equal guest columns about each side of the debate so it's hard to quite tell but tbf I'm just going off of what I saw mostly in the la building, music building, and the gym but everywhere I turned there was loud outcry about the situation. And I dunno much about the Hauck situation with the kaimin other than I was around when it happened and it made no difference to me on how I felt about him. It seemed to me that most students were upset when he left as if betrayed.

And I'd be interested to know which reps voted unanimously because I'm actually quite shocked as one individual who was in asum as a pharmacy student who was familiar with the girl and openly talked about how he was aware of her... Instability.

Students enjoy fun....that's all. They will choose football and basketball....just anything to have fun and drink. There has been zero give aways this year to students, zero promos, it used to be a party that the university threw by hosting and hyping. Now they don't. Tinkle has been in the news the last two years promoting basketball games and it worked. But nobody is trying for football. We honestly need an Espn game or something to get the students back and proving how fun games are. Espn brings fans to yard.....

Well they have been using their tickets and now that its a lot harder to "scalp" them, their real attendance is better known. That said its real hard for students to excited about a game 200 miles away that they can't get into, not to mention they are students with just few weeks left. Papers to write, finals to take etc etc.

Football has become an attraction for the areas wealthy. Unless you are a GAA member or commit to season tickets, there isn't much for you anymore. A dad wanting to take his kids to a game for the experienced (how I started 30 years ago) is a thing of the past.

Yah as far as this weeks game is concerned let's be real as long as people insist on selling their tickets for hundreds of dollars there won't be much student attendance.

Griz cat student section was packed with students last year....price had nothing to do with it.

The cat student section will e full this year too. I'm saying montana students aren't going to spend hundreds to get tickets in Bozeman and vice versa.

To the ORIGINAL point of this thread, the U does need to better with the students, i.e promotions, give em at least a dame t-shirt for ONE game. Something, anything, I fully agree. However, others are right in that, they gave the students almost 700 more seats this season, and CLEARLY, that was a mistake, no matter how much promotion you do, the demand was never gonna be that high, especially on a non cat-griz year.

Kids are really goofy these days. Everything happens in the blink of an eye for them, so a football game (even a Griz game) is a real grind. They could be online, texting God knows who, or sleeping instead. Not to be a be a downer, but your in-game experience doesn't exactly grab the attention of today's 19 year old. I like it fine, but it's about what I remember 15 years ago. Stuffed animal rides Harley, classic rock anthem, cannon, occasional jug band on West press box. Not exactly the stuff kids these days flock to. Just my 2 cents.

Historically the noon starts have always had fewer students. But Saturday's numbers were a little baffling.

That said, I highly question whether putting a few posters up telling kids it's game day would've made a lick of difference.
