Cuonzo Martin rumored to be leaving Cal for Georgia Tech. But then no Pac12 school would take a chance on a Montana coach. Would they?

Sure they would.

However, what has DeCuire really done that might attract the attention of a power-five conference team? Back-to-back 20-win seasons sounds pretty good ... except it's in the pathetic Big Sky conference. And all he's done is lose in the post-season. "Not a promotional bell-ringer," as I recall from some movie.

If he gets the Griz into the NCAA post-season and wins a game there, or takes them to an NIT title ... then I might worry. Otherwise, forgettaboutit.

You have a legit point. However, Travis was a finalist for Cal last time. That was before he had any HC experience. This has me really concerned. :o

I love Travis. I also love Ken Bone. Not too many issues that I don't lose sleep over, but this is one of them.

It IS a great security blanket to have Mr. Bone who could move one seat over on the bench should the need arise. I'm just amazed we've hung onto him as an assistant.

Yes.

We're not out of the woods yet. That "Cal Bear" is still out there, lurking, for two reasons.

First, in my opinion (and I believe everybody is entitled to my own opinion), Cuonzo Martin is not a good fit for Cal. Even if he survives the current sexual harassment case involving one of his assistant coaches (and I think he will) Martin is clearly is looking elsewhere. It's just a matter of time.

Second, Cal has a new Athletic Director, H. Michael Williams, who replaced Sandy Barbour, the woman who forsook DeCuire for Cuonzo Martin. H. Michael is a Cal graduate who has been connected to the program for at least a decade, and was interim director after Barbour was fired before assuming the position permanently. Because he's been around the program, he surely knows Mike Montgomery, which means Travis will always have an influential advocate the next time this job opens up.

Oh, one other thing. Never trust a guy who parts his name on the left. He'll disappoint you, every time.

I think instead of thinking Travis is going to leave with every job that comes open (San Francisco, Santa Clara) you should first understand how cerebral this guy is. And then take a look at what he did at Green River CC. I'm not going to pretend I know what his plan is, but I don't get the feeling he's as antsy as some of you.

Thanks Kyle. That's certainly great to hear. But as Montana fans, we have to stay realistic. We know that we can't pay our coaches anywhere near what the P12 does, and even considerably less than, say, the WCC. I, too, think that Travis has no great interest in leaving UM. But $750k or more is a pretty persuasive reason to do so.

I'd love to see what DeCuire can do with this program, if he stays put as long as Wayne Tinkle did. If we are lucky, he too will wait until his daughter graduates before moving on. Considering she is a toddler, that would put him here for a long while. :thumb:
