Trumaine Johnson

Some interesting stats regarding Tru's performance so far this year with the Rams (spoiler alert - he's playing very well) from today's St Louis Post Dispatch:

"* Underrated: cornerback Trumaine Johnson. He had another very good game against the Colts, and it continued a run of strong play. Johnson may not cover opponents' best receiver — that assignment usually goes to Janoris Jenkins — but Johnson does his assigned job better than any of the Rams' three primary cornerbacks.

Here's what's happened when quarterbacks target a Rams corner, courtesy of Pro Football Focus:

Janoris Jenkins: 37 completions in 55 attempts (67.2 pct.) ... 5 TDs ... 1 INT... 7 pass defenses ... passer rating 118.5

Cortland Finnegan: 26 completions in 34 attempts (76.4 %) ... 4 TDs ... 1 INT ... zero pass defenses ... passer rating 136.0

Trumaine Johnson: 24 completions in 44 attempts (54.5 %) ... 1 TD ... 2 INT ... 4 pass defenses ... passer rating 61.5.

In the last four games Johnson has given up only four completions in 12 attempts for 35 yards."

Keep up the great work Tru!!

Not against the cats being proud of him, I would be if he played for my team but no kicker belongs in the HOF. Ray Guy is as close as it gets for me and that's debatable. Jan Stenerude was average for NFL kickers and I can't for the life of me figure out why the hell he is in there.[/quote]

I'm guessing that you must be a lot younger than me, which probably explains such an ignorant comment. When Jan played for MSU, he kicked a 59 yard FG against UM, which at the time set a record for the longest FG in history, at any level, college or pro, and that record stood for 5 years. He was widely acknowledged as the best kicker in the NFL for much of his career, and played in the league for 19 seasons. He also set the record for longest FG in Super Bowl history, and that record stood for 25 years. In general, kickers are much more accurate now than they were in Jan's era, so his stats may not look all that spectacular by today's standards. He made 70% of his FG at a time when the league average was only 53%, plus he probably had more range than any other kicker for most of his career. If any kicker belongs in the HOF, it's Jan Stenerud.

edit: He was also 1st team All-AFL or All-NFL 10 times during his career...hardly an "average" kicker.

Holy shit. Only on Egriz could a thread about Trumaine Johnson having a great game in the NFL turn into a bitchfest about Jan Stensrud. Unbelievable.

Sorry, but I just couldn't let that comment go without a response. Dupuyer obviously doesn't know much about NFL history, if he thinks Stenerud was just "an average kicker". As for Tru, even though I'm a Cats fan I'm glad to see him playing so well, because I'm also a Rams fan. Actually, I'm always glad to see former Griz players do well in the NFL, since it reflects well on the BSC as a whole.

No apology needed knhoj, I didn't mean to point the finger right at you. It happens with every single thread on this site. Thanks for rooting on Griz in the pros! I do the same thing for MSU players at the next level. Always excited to see Dane Fletcher making plays for the Patriots! If I had to pick, he is my favorite Cat Football player of all time. Great to see Trumaine Johnson's pro potential developing as a starting CB. That play he made on the ball was phenomenal, but the way he baited Andrew Luck into throwing that ball was even better!

I know plenty and there are many that deserve to be there before him. He set records that aren't records and had average numbers at best. I don't buy that kickers get in ever. He is 112th in field goal % all time and 12th in scoring behind 11 other kickers 1 of whom is in but was a quarterback as well. Sell me on the fact that a kicker with 111 other kickers who were better than him % wise and 10 1/2 points wise should be in. Statistically he only made 2/3 kicks he attempted. He is out of 1st in scoring by 845 points which is exactly 49.7% of his career points. The field isn't shorter the air isn't thinner the ball isn't lighter. He is statistically unimpressive and doesn't belong in the NFL hall of fame. Was he good? absolutely Should you be proud? absolutely. He is not the only kicker that belongs and arguably, I don't feel any kicker belongs. Supply me with an example of a player with such inadequate numbers compared to his peers and we'll talk. Don't feed me a cock and bull line about how back in the day when you were a kid kickers had to kick uphill in the snow in to the wind. He does not statistically belong. 58 yard record that is now 5 yards short of the record and 11 short of the NCAA record. Not impressed. Super Bowl long? 48 yards oh my gold jacket for you sir. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I don't know anything. I find it hard to believe that he belongs and that's all there is to it.

1 other item to note...the game was played different and kickers weren't used like they are now.

1 other thing he's a kicker

Your arguments are ridiculous. You have to consider players' HOF credentials within the context of the era in which they played. QB like Bradshaw, Montana, and Staubach, didn't produce numbers comparable to the QB of today, such as Brady, Manning, and Brees, but the game was completely different back then, as were the rules. Same thing with receivers...you won't ever convince me that players like Swann and Stallworth weren't every bit as good as the best receivers of the current era, just because their stats aren't nearly as impressive. Tony Romo already holds all of the Cowboys' passing records, but I doubt there's many Dallas fans who would take him over Staubach or Troy Aikman.

knhoj. I'll take Dan Carpenter and you take Jane Stenerud and we'll see who wins more games.

Geez, sorry for posting the picture. I was just sticking up for the Cats by showing their last good NFL player.

I never said that Stenerud was a better kicker than Carpenter, but Stenerud was the best kicker of his era, whereas Carpenter is not the best of the current era. IMHO that makes Stenerud more HOF worthy than Carpenter...simple as that.

I didn't say anything about the hall of fame. I'm not a big NFL guy and don't really care about it (other than the former Griz players). When it was mentioned that Jane Stenerud was the only kicker in the HOF, I figured it was because she broke through in a male dominated sport and achieved some marginal success which, if she was a he, would've resulted in being cut from the roster. After some research, I now realize that Jane Stenerud is a guy. I feel sort of stupid now. Sorry.

I do appreciate the fact that the most famous player to ever don the blue and gold is a kicker...how fitting.

Why aren't the best kickers from every era in the HOF? Why aren't there any punters in the HOF? Bradshaw and Montana and Staubach are in the HOF because of their dominance in Super Bowls. What kind of contributions did Swann and Stallworth have to Super Bowls? This is where HOF is made. Len Dawson is the only reason he ever even got to a Super Bowl.

That's a joke, right? You can make a pretty good argument that Swann and Stallworth's Super Bowl performances were what tipped the balance in getting them into the HOF.

Lynn Swann was the Super Bowl X MVP and made spectacular catches back in a day when QBs and WRs weren't afforded much protection. Watch the clip below.

That's good ... One never knows when discussions of kickers and punters are involved... But if you must (and I know he's not from Montana and a bit off topic) and you're going to talk about old school kickers then you have to include Pete Gogolak who changed the game by bringing soccer styled kicking. My apologies to whoever started this topic on Tru Johnson!
