grizindabox said:I just looked, and a Minnesota student can attend NDSU for around $12,000 per academic year for tuition. Out of state tuition at Montana is $27,000.
grizindabox said:AZGrizFan said:How does NDSU do it?
For starters, I would suggest looking at the cost of tuition at UM compared to NDSU. Also notice how they give a tuition break to Minnesota students.

The one thing that Griz fans have mastered is making excuses for losing.
grizindabox said:Spanky2 said:I don’t know the answer to that. I suspect it’s because Bobby hasn’t been given a budget which will allow him and his staff to recruit them.
Like I said, you fail to understand the reality, but continue to complain about it. For example, how do you convince 70-80 out of state kids to play football at UM when you are limited to 63 FTE scholarships? This isn't about limits imposed by UM or Bobby on how the process works. Even if you gave 63 out of state kids full scholarships, you are looking to fill 46 spots with a walkon.

Before you attempt to establish yourself as a recruiting/scholarship expert, allow me to inform you that I have some knowledge of recruiting and scholarships, including partial scholarships. Why do you assume that out of state athletes can’t be recruited with partial scholarships? How do you know UM’s policy for the football program regarding the recruiting budget? You failed to answer my question concerning why North Dakota State only has 18 kids from North Dakota on their roster? Since North Dakota State is the Gold Standard for FCS football, please explain how we can compete with them carrying 51 Montana raised athletes on the roster? In conclusion, allow me to state that I live in Montana and I have had several outstanding athletes in the family, thus, I’m pro Montana raised athletes. Just in case you wanted to attack me on the basis of being anti Montana athletes. Finally, I believe Bobby Hauck is an excellent coach.

He just said several posts up that Minnesota students get reduced tuition at NDSU. They have 35 players from Minnesota, meaning 53 players that can take partial scholarships without a problem. The talent level of Minnesota HS's is also a lot higher than Montana or North Dakota's is.Spanky2 said:grizindabox said:Like I said, you fail to understand the reality, but continue to complain about it. This is pretty obvious how they make it work.

They recruit from a broad area including Florida, Georgia, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, California.

And those are probably the ones that get the full rides. They can treat Minnesota just like it was NoDak kids, which helps tremendously.
There might be a business case to be made that doing that for Idaho, Washington, and Oregon students in general could help the enrollment and bottom line numbers at UM just as much as it might help the football program.Spanky2 said:AZGrizFan said:And those are probably the ones that get the full rides. Agreed. If Box is correct, that’s a tremendous advantage for the Bison. I wonder if UM could structure a similar agreement with another state. If not, we aren’t competitive with the Bison from a recruiting position.

I'm reading these posts and it is beginning to look like Griz fans are suffering from PTSD. It will pass. But I do find it is interesting that Egriz posters seem to be fixated on in state players. I've never seen or heard of any other state that does that. In South Carolina people are proud when the locals do well. Why is UM different? And, to be truthful, it seems even more important at MSU. I have noticed also that is seems this site focuses on Missoula and that is just a feeling I get. Maybe the problem is not the Univ of Montana as much as the U of Missoula. Butte once had a direct line to UM athletics, now...the grass is greener on the other side. Montana is a huge state with more older people than young, if you want to play you've go to find the players no matter where they are. DeCuire has found a few diamonds, and the new Womens' Bball isn't shy in going after foreign born, in state, out of state or whatever. I enjoy UM games but do not enjoy the "poor us" crap I read of, here. So, I rarely do, anymore. But tomorrow is another day....I personally did not appreciate the Hauck's when they were neighbors, but so what....They've done ok. UM did ok this year.

North Dakota also produces fewer D1 football players on average than Montana, at least in part due to a smaller population. I recall that was one of the reasons that the Montana-North Dakota all-star game, which Montana dominated, was cancelled.

Well sure. When the two Montana schools have a combined 100+ Montana kids on their rosters (whether they belong there or not), then it will ALWAYS appear that Montana produces more D1 players. It’s due largely to the Montana schools’ misguided belief that more Montana players is better.
We looked slow and unathletic on Saturday. There’s really only one way to fix that, and it’s not by recruiting more kids from Montana that should be playing Frontier ball (even if they DO come on as walkons).
