Thoughts on "Firing Delaney" (different viewpoint)

What makes you think he wants to stick with it? Wasn't he retired and asked to come back during the transition?
Maybe he'll head back to Butte and re-retire.
He has been quoted as wanting two more years.

The thread has gotten way off course again, so I'd thought start a thread with a different view point. There is no way we should "Fire" Delaney. He stepped up and took the job, when nobody else would want to, into a terrible position that Pres. Engstrom created, in our head football coaching position. He has done a great job in recruiting, certainly given the circumstances. So firing him, in the middle of the season, would be another terrible move by RE. In fact, RE is the one that needs to be fired. He is terrible.

Now... do we need to take a hard look at NOT RENEWING HIS CONTRACT AFTER THE SEASON?? Yes. This totally different than firing him. Firing Delaney would be a terrible PR move frankly. He's a Butte guy, people like him, and he's a good guy. Let him ride this season out and show him some respect, as I don't think it will end up being a train wreck. (But, he should be retired, and not leading the Griz.)

We'll end the season with a respectable record (my opinion), and from there, we should look at all options for the next head coach. I'm not sold on Gragg as the guy.. I am much more sold on Gregorak being the guy.. but regardless, the job needs to be opened up on a national basis. Do it right, find the right guy, and let's move forward.

Delaney should be applauded for the work he's done, certainly in light of the job he stepped into, but I can see no reason why his contract should be renewed after the season.

How do we know this? We don't! Engstrom didn't look elsewhere.

He did, it was reported he contacted Mike Van Diest as well as I think a few other coaches with Griz ties.
I wonder if this is what lead to Carroll's "slouch" of a season and him saying it was gonna be his last year at Carroll then came back and now Carroll isn't doing to bad. #5 as of yesterday. Kinda makes me wonder how good he'd do at the FCS level.

Gregorak? Are you kidding me?

Have to agree, he can't figure out that if the opponent is going with 4 wide sets it's not a great idea having 3 good run D backers on the field, with JP on a slot receiver. So I doubt he is up to being a head coach.

But we do need a national search for the next coach.

I agree but what kind of coach are we going to get for what Montana pays their coaches?
And this definitely is a problem.

What do you guys suggest we pay the coach? I thought for the longest time that the UM coach should be paid more, but could it be that we just aren't as big time as we might think?

Half of what I could find was from actual databases in CA and WA, so those should be total comp. Couldn't find a similar database for MT or AZ, so those salaries might not include incentives. I think Bohl's new contract is $206k plus a possible $40k or so in incentives. Once a UM coach does what he's done, he can demand that.

Based on what I could find:

Sperbeck - SAC ST. - 221k (2012)
Walsh - SLO - 195k (2012)
Baldwin - EWU - 149k (2012)
Souers - NAU - 130k (2011)
Ash - MSU - 155k (2012)
Delaney - UM - [about]150k (2012)
Gould - Davis - 256k (2012 as asst. at Berkeley; likely took a pay cut at Davis)

I'd love another coach like Hauck.... Beau Baldwin. Oh wait, never in a million years will we see either of those two.

Someone's said it before.. let's bring in a young up and comer, with ties to the program, and a little more of a brash swagger to them. (and I don't mind a disciplinarian style either).

Some that come to mind:

Jonathan Smith
Ty Gregorak
There has to be someone at NDSU that comes close to that description
Dave Dickenson (hell would freeze over first, but would be worth a try)

Anyone else you all can think of?

I totally agree with you, no need to fire Delaney and at the same time no need to renew his contract either. Time for a change of direction, yet I see them keeping Delaney on for one or more years.

I know this is all super duper important in Grizzlyville, but hiring a new coach can't be anywhere near the top of the list for a Royce Engstrom who has seen a thousand student enrollment decline and as a result a million dollar revenue decrease. Private donations are off, too. The Missoula liberals he cowtowed to over the sexcapades have now moved on to crapping on his campus expansion plans.
And this guy doesn't seem multitask well. If you were Engstrom --- I know your not, but bite your tongue real hard put your shoes on backwards and just pretend --would you rush to replace a coach for a team with a winning record? He has much bigger headaches than that.
