The Reno wreck and the BSC tournament idea

It's been obvious for months that UM would be fielding a potential tournament champion yet the fans complain that no one will show up. Do you see the irony in that while you complain?

For all you people whining about the attendance at the BSC tourney, you are truly part of the problem. You can be there supporting the Griz if you feel so strongly but you seem to be content to whine and complain. Get to Reno and support the Griz if you feel so stongly. Until then, the tourney is in Reno and next year Boise. You constant complaining of the venue and the efforts to give the players a chance of a championship and taste of tournament action is taking the focus off the teams that worked so hard for 4 months.

It’s hard to get to Reno. Plane tickets are expensive and it takes 11 hours to drive there. I can’t go to Reno anymore. I can’t go to a place for a tourney where I’m not going to have fun or enjoy anything but the games themselves. Complaining is not taking anything away. Complaining is reinstating the fact that these players deserve better. They deserve even a single game in a tourney where 1k plus are there. Which would be ANY game in missoula or weber or Idaho. Other venues you might not except when their team plays. Still you don’t think the best two teams in the conf deserve a 5-7k person crowd in a rowdy atmosphere with hype to crown a champion??? Instead of 500 in a warehouse in a championship? I mean come ON. Have you watched the games this year? What about did you see the bud player in their game...went to a TO was waving arms up and down lick most would after a run... then all his teammates made fun of him cause they were pointing and laughing nobody was there. How do you think that makes the players feel? I’m guessing not very F’in good

If the BSC is willing to do Reno...why not just do Vegas instead?? People would actualy travel to Vegas for that. I would. You could fly in cheap from anywhere, stay 2-3 nights and leave.

I think that's initially what they wanted, but no place for them with the Pac12, WCC, and MTN west going on there.

I see. Reno honestly looks like the worst place on earth, like post apocalyptic. I've never been there but just what I see online looks horrible.

I'm a city planner and I generally know quite a bit about most cities, but really know nothing about Reno....

Can anyone give me some info on what keep Reno alive, what is it like on a day to day basis? Besides the what look like horribly shitty casinos, what is the driving economic engine in that city?

Hey, GrizLA.... I think there are a lot of solid arguments regarding Reno from people like me. I've actually explored Reno options for all three years (including this year) but opted NO in the end. Too many dead ends (many personal, I admit) most of them with a "no brainer's" focus on poor value for the dollar.

So, a few years back I went to Spokane when WSU hosted a 6-team rr tourney at the Spokane Arena. Had a blast. Great games, good dining options and tons of affordable lodging. This year I went to LA for the Legends Classic games at Pepperdine. Incredible time! Great games... and do I need to tell you about all the cool stuff I had access to in LA? Loved every minute. Both Spokane and LA were great experiences that I'd jump at again. So... I will consider Boise seriously next year, though I still believe Spokane is a better option for most Big Sky fans. In the meantime, I'll watch from home pretty certain that Reno is not a valid college basketball venue.

Last night I went to the Conference USA tourney at the Star in Frisco. In the elevator on the way up to our suite I met a guy in the elevator because he commented on my Griz shirt I was wearing. He said he used to work for Idaho, he was now with UTEP. Does anyone know who that gentleman was? I didnt catch his name, and he was obviously affiliated with the UTEP athletic department.

Reno is an older and historic city with a population that exceeds Billings and Missoula and has some great casinos without the flash of Vegas. When I lived in LV, most NV residents thought of it as SF north. It has the casinos, but don't forget the University which is very good, also it is a major distribution center with warehousing and light manufacturing. Property values are pretty high because so many people want to live there, especially if they are into winter sports. I admit, it is a poor place for a basketball tournament but it is there and that is that.

I don't disagree with any of that. What bothers me is the complaining from people who can go but choose not to. I'm hoping you took some of my suggestions when you went to LA. If I were not 3,000 miles away and dealing with planting, I would be there for the semi and champ game. Next year, providing we have no hurricanes blowing down century old pecan trees, I will be in Boise.

The problem isn't where to have the tournament. The problem is the the tournament.

Agreed.

Disagree. Almost everyone has a Tourney and I think it's valid as with small conferences you can get a team who is very good most the year but then an injury or their level of play in general decreases throughout the year. If the conference is competitive you could have a Reg. season winner who has lost 3 of the last 5 and all is 0-3 vs the top 3 teams in the conf win due to how long the reg season is. The tourney should allow the best team RIGHT NOW...to the NCAA. However, you should give evident reward to a team who won the reg. season because it is a feat itself. So if the reg season winner who is struggling gets to play at home. they might right the ship or play well enough to get to the championship but the best overall team might come in and win the tourney to go to the NCAA.

Great post, Badlands but I believe the Reno Chamber of Commerce prefers the descriptive word dystopia over apocalyptic. Please make a note of it. :thumb:

How many threads do we have about the Conference tournament in Reno, and how many more do we need to see ? :dead: :dead:

I have to say, all the arguments that Kasper stated last year about the tournament have to be thrown out now. Literally 50 people today to watch MSU? Were there that many? I know they picked Boise but I don't know if that will be much better. No connection to the BSC in Boise either. What if the Conference decided to let the conference champion host the tournament the following year? This would alleviate schools not knowing where they would be going in March and allow the schools to make travel arrangements. Also, it would be held in a BSC town and possibly put more butts in the seats during the week. It also gives the current year champs incentive to repeat as they know they will be hosting the following year. Just a thought.

PGM, I was trying to suggest a legitimate alternative of having the conference champ host the following year. If you read my post it was about that idea of how to make it better......

The Montana crowd looked pretty good and sounded loud. Too bad the university did not send cheerleaders or band for the semis and finals....kinda pathetic.
