The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

There's no way in hell the Griz land an offensive coordinator from the Mountain West. I know it's a dream conference for a lot of move uppers, but this is where reality comes in with a cold bucket of truth wakes everyone up to the fact that there's no similarity between UM pay and Mountain West pay.

There are good coaches in the lower divisions. Beau Baldwin was a Central Washington guy. KC Keeler was a DIII Rowan before Delaware hired him. Joe Glenn was a D II guy. He brought a good staff with him once Ron Richards hit the bricks.

Ya isn't that what any good coach is looking for?
No. Notice where he talked about pay. I've heard that UM is described by some coaches as "the worst job in america." Below average pay compared to other coaches in your conference, and if you don't win every game, there will be For Sale signs in your yard. Even if you do win every game, the margin better be more than three TD's. Oh, and you better be able to recruit, play, and win with Montana kids every year. These types of things need to change if UM wants to be the quality of job to outsiders as some of you think it is.
I totally agree that the pay needs to change, upward. But, the passion of the fans is what it is, and that's not going to change ... and probably shouldn't.
Our passionate fans need to appreciate winning more, and how hard it is to win any games. We are a liberal arts school in Missoula, Montana. Not exactly a recruiting hotbed for college football. Fans need to stop acting like we have infinintely more talent than everyone else. People act like we have by far the most talent, every year, and if we don't win it all the coaches are horrible and screwed these poor players over. Coaches don't want to coach in that environment for crap pay.

Voice of reason? nooooo, it can't be.

I don't think UM is too far off of a coordinator in the MWC, especially if UM is aggressive this time around. Rolovich was making 125k before last year.

UNLV: 140k

USU: 182k
http://247sports.com/Coach/Kevin-McGiven-628

SDSU: 205k
http://247sports.com/Coach/Bob-Toledo-701

SJSU: 205k
http://247sports.com/Coach/Jimmie-Dougherty-739

UNM: 221k

CSU and FSU OCs make in the low 200k range as well.

I have to believe UM could get over $200k in total compensation to the new HC somehow.

Honest question about the process for the hire... Since some of you seem to be "in the know" about who's on top of the list.. Is this just going to be announced, as in it's a done-deal? That seems highly unlikely to me. I'm guessing there'll be the usual 3-4 top candidates who come interview, complete with media stories about the finalists. Or am I way off base?

No. It could be over $200k if all incentives were met, but that isn't likely. And it's not the same thing as a $200k base check.

It looks like we could make Timm-Rosenbach a match offer.

I still think a lot of coordinators are willing to take a small paycut for a shot at a head coaching position...it's been said on here many times that 1-AA football is a stepping-stone for most coaches. How does a 1-A coordinator get experience if they aren't the coordinator at a Top 25 school? Get a HC position at a 1-AA school for a few years, take a program to the top, and get offers. So us getting a coordinator from a MWC school isn't all that unrealistic, and actually somewhat of a possibility, especially with the amount of national coverage we get on Root every year, plus all of the other amenities the UM football program has to offer.

So offer them both and make it a 50 / 50 chance of landing one.

think you mean 0/0

on what information are you basing your comment regarding moglia?

Common sense? Coastal is his alma mater, IIRC. He left the finance world to pursue his passion for coaching and turn them into a national power.

Moglia did not attend CC...he's a Fordham grad...If I recall the is not collecting a coaching salary...if that's the case UM can afford to bid for he and his staff!

BREAKING: Brint Wahlberg is the new Coach for the Griz!!!!!!

Trust me, my information is better than yours.

Not a chance. His mom doesn't let him stay out after the street lights come on. Night games would be impossible.

Incorrect. He could still be a great coach even if he couldn't attend night games. I believe he has been practicing calling plays via Twitter for some time now. He must have that mastered by now.

Rosy back again?!? This is the guy that tanked the 2012 season, went to Weber talking all about how happy he was to coach there, only to jet that same year to UNLV. The guy is flighty as hell and a walking dumpster fire. He is about as trustworthy as a copper head. I'll pass on him.
