The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

wonder if you could entice a wiz kid like Brian Johnson? was the youngest OC in PAC12, now Dak Prescott's position coach. Brian is a winner and proven coach, and may be interested in being one of the youngest (if not the youngest at 27) head coaches in Div. 1 and you catch him on his way up (thinking of guys like Jud Heathcoate, Kelvin Sampson, Montgomery) -- just a thought.

If UM does the search right, these are the kinds of guys that will be revealed. We had no idea who Rob Ash was when we started our search, and he was 2nd or 3rd on most boosters lists behind Kill and Lennon until the final selection was made. Good search, committee, and process for us yielded good results. I think the same will happen for you -- you have possibly the most storied program in FCS that will attract a lot of interest.

stop looking in the rear view mirror

Hats off to Mick -- a personal friend and coach of mine from decades back, he has done great things for your program in a time of need. Hope to buy you one at the Vu

When you compare the pay to the unrealistic expectations of the spoiled-rotten fanbase, this isn't that great a job. I hope Haslam pulls a rabbit out of his hat.
Bull. Great coaches are competitive and thrive on those expectations. Can't handle it? Go coach at Southern Utah - town and fans could care less. We have amazing fans in my opinion .

Ya isn't that what any good coach is looking for?
No. Notice where he talked about pay. I've heard that UM is described by some coaches as "the worst job in america." Below average pay compared to other coaches in your conference, and if you don't win every game, there will be For Sale signs in your yard. Even if you do win every game, the margin better be more than three TD's. Oh, and you better be able to recruit, play, and win with Montana kids every year. These types of things need to change if UM wants to be the quality of job to outsiders as some of you think it is.

I totally agree that the pay needs to change, upward. But, the passion of the fans is what it is, and that's not going to change ... and probably shouldn't.

Our passionate fans need to appreciate winning more, and how hard it is to win any games. We are a liberal arts school in Missoula, Montana. Not exactly a recruiting hotbed for college football. Fans need to stop acting like we have infinintly more talent than everyone else. People act like we have by far the most talent, every year, and if we don't win it all the coaches are horrible and screwed these poor players over. Coaches don't want to coach in that environment for crap pay.

No thanks on Brian Johnson. I've watched him coach at Utah and he seems to be a screamer, a very angry person on the sideline. Note that Utah's QB play has improved since he left.

If you can coach and win, you'll get your money sooner or later. Maybe not at UM unfortunately, but you'll get it. Other than taking dead end jobs at the time, I'd say Joe and Bobby did alright financially when they left. Let's face it, the chances of the Griz getting some young, up and coming coach that wins and wants to stay here forever it's slim to none, so our only hope is to bring in that coach and hope he takes us to the promise land before he bails for bigger money. The Griz are and always will be a stepping stone to the next move up and hopefully our winning tradition will be enough to entice the next great coach, even if the money isn't there initially.

True fact on the not "wanting to stay here forever" -- barring an amazing (and nearly impossible) combinations of factors. (Hell, whoever thought Steve Spurrier would leave Florida, where he went to school, and then had huge success as a coach?) Even if you doubled the salary, the best coaches out there would still see UM as a stepping stone to better things -- even more money and (hopefully) more recognition on a meaningful national stage.

Accurate. I don't really care who we hire as long as it's a game changer. The current compensation plan is a joke and does not appear to have materially changed in over a decade. Evolve or die. I know I've said it before, but why not keep the 160k base and tie another 200k or so to performance? You can't tell me that UM wouldn't see at least a 200k uptick if we won a national championship. The prospect of 360k could entice some coordinators/position coaches from the big boys. UCLA's DC made just over 200k base and 380k total in 2013. I'm not saying he's the guy or anything. Just an example of how such an increase could open us up to a whole new level of candidates.

YAAAA cuz weve never won with Montana kids   But pay does need to go up...DEFINATLY

I think most will agree bringing in a coach with a more up tempo offense would be a welcome sight. I remember the days of Hauck where we would win games, but not in a flashy, highlight reel way and fans were calling for a new OC, especially after a loss. Not that that wasnt warranted, but it will be interesting to see the fans reaction to a new system, especially if there are growing pains the first season (ex Plu's first season).

I think that Rob Phenicie lasting only two seasons as OC at UNLV before being demoted to QB coach -- and now TE coach -- validates seven years of Griz fan frustration with PhenBall. The guy should have been battling it out with Dom Daste for asst coach fill in the blank instead of coordinating an offense poorly and relying on talented athletes to squeeze success from broken playbook.
The next coach could have run the wishbone, as long as it functioned better then PhenBall.

I've heard from a very reliable source that you already have narrowed the search down to three applicants. Jack Johnson (Yep - CMR legend), Chase Reynolds, or Tate Forcier.

These are no dumber than some of the names I'm seeing some of you throw out. There are certainly some IQ challenged posters that frequent this site. :coffee:

Ryan Kessman has accepted the job and will be announced as the new Grizzly head coach, as soon as he gets his car stuck out of a snowstorm somewhere in Idaho.

so would Bill Belichick....probably same chance...

So offer them both and make it a 50 / 50 chance of landing one.

think you mean 0/0

on what information are you basing your comment regarding moglia?

Common sense? Coastal is his alma mater, IIRC. He left the finance world to pursue his passion for coaching and turn them into a national power.

I'll throw this name into the hat.
