The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

Can we hope Super Dave is getting tired of converting loonies and toonies into real money?

Why does everyone assume DD would be a great head coach? Loved the guy as a player, doesn't mean anything else.

The word that I hear is they have been talking to Marty Mornhinweg. I have also heard he is currently building a house in Missoula. A lot less money than the jets but it is his alma mater.

Well, he'd probably love to get the eff away from the Jets....

But seriously. This would probably be a million dollar pay cut. I don't see that happening.

And he passed this job grade long ago.

I'll just put this out there:

MVD

Career record of 185-29.
Playoffs every single year but one since 1999.
8 NAIA championship appearances
6 National Championships

...and I'll just put this out there....was considered by both schools....he pulled his name each time...bridge burned...we move on...

. What I don't want is Henson or Gragg. Or any of the current staff to be HC.
Not to worry; it's recognized that no current assistant is ready for the HC job.

That would be an interesting hire... What are the chances that UM lands him? Looks like an outside shot. Also, he could be coach for a while before hanging it up, kind of like what Pflugrad wanted to do.

He has even pulled his name from his own job before. Total flake....

...at this point in time...not on his radar....

Dickinson isn't coming here ($$ and family). Hauck isn't coming back ($$ and ego). I seriously doubt that Baldwin or Kramer are interested, or willing to switch BSC teams. I have absolutely no interest in MVD.

I believe that it will be an outsider, or someone who may have some ties but has been out in the world for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if Justin Green is retained, as he is the recruiting coordinator. I hope he is. He also has the contacts with the coaches in the Northwest, which we have to retain. My interest in the current staff drops off from there.

My preference is someone from an area that has a very strong recruiting base. Such as the midwest, Southwest, etc. While we make fun of it, Ash has brought in some strong players from the Texas area through his staff's contacts there. If it is a guy who views this as a stepping stone to a bigger job, I am fine with that. I think if we want something else, we aren't getting the best guy.

I trust Kent to do the right thing here, and get us the best guy available, under our budget constraints (which are a big issue). The board of regents are not going to allow us to pay a huge salary. Just won't happen.

As a position coach. I love the guy in UM history. Does not mean he'll be a great headcoach

Dave Dickenson - would he leave the CFL for what I'd presume would be a step down in pay? Probably will be a CFL head coach soon, or at least have an opportunity to be one.

Kraig Paulsen - defensive minded coach, never been an FCS head coach but long time Montana roots. Could retain some current coaches that would fit well with him.

Brent Pease - would leave a higher paying job but would finally get the head coaching gig he's wanted. Wasn't he a finalist when Pflu was hired?

Ty Gregorak - maybe the only internal option, could hold the current group together well, knows the coaches he'd want to keep and others he'd want to replace. Kind of a quick rise to the job though, is he ready?

Mike Breske - probably going to be in the market for a new job once Wazzu's season is over. Is he HC material?

Mike Van Diest - NAIA to FCS is a huge leap. Just a few years ago he almost quit on Carroll (allegedly) due to a lack of passion for the job. We know he can win championships at the NAIA level.

Robin Pflugrad - Snowballs chance in hell?

Would love to see Justin Green get the promotion if not we have to keep him on the staff because we need to keep this recruiting class in tact and looking to the next classes, guy is one hell of a recruiting coordinator.

There is nothing wrong with getting a coach that aspires to move up eventually. That is the price you pay for being a top notch FCS team. If they give their all to UM while here and build their resume' with winning Griz teams then that is all we can ask. Then you find the guy that has the same ambitions and keep the momentum going forward.

Just heard the news!
Thanks for everything Coach Mick! He really did well guiding us through a tough time.
As I sit here in 70 degree weather, I'll enjoy reading on who you all think should takeover up there.

I doubt this would happen, but I'd love to see Tim Hauck here. I do hope whoever takes the job will have Tim's passion for defense.

You guys should try for Paul Wristen at CSU Pueblo.

I kind of like the suggestion. But let's be honest: "try for"?? Please. If Paul saw a 406 area code show up on his office phone he'd be on a flight before the first ring ended.

I would think Kent's phone will be ringing and his email full tomorrow. There is a lot to look forward to at Griz nation. It will be interesting to see if there is interest from within the conference. Of course you're not going to hear about those that are. Those channels of communication will be kept very quiet unless someone gets the job.
