If Money does stay, I hope the staff doesn’t do him a disservice with the roster construction around him again. I think Money is built in a similar mold as the James Harden and Luka Doncic’s of the world. He’s not a PG, but the offense is at its best when it’s dictated to get the ball into their hands at the end of the play. High usage, high turnover guys who create advantages for the offense at an elite level. Money did a great job of creating advantages this year, and man was it frustrating watching his teammates squander them by bricking open 3s, not cutting, or by not attacking long close outs.
There’s a tried and true method of building successful teams around these kinds of guys. You need a PG who can defend and get guys into their sets (e.g a Chris Paul). You need wings who can defend, cut, and knock down the occasional triple while not needing the ball much on offense (e.g P.J Washington’s). And you need a big who just runs to the rim hard and rebounds (e.g a Clint Capela). The pro of building teams around this kind of player is that, when it’s done right, it produces some elite basketball teams. The con is that, when it’s not, it can get ugly on both ends.
The staff NEEDS to grab a reliable PG and a coordinated center. Another shooting wing who can (preferably) also defend would be a cherry on top. That we’re already recruiting shows we expect to have spots, so we’ve got to use them wisely.
