As a EWU fan, I was at the 2011 and 2013 games and tailgated with Griz fans who were awesome and invited them to my tailgate next year at Eastern. Awesome people. I've been reading this thread and will put my 2 cents in worth without quoting anyone, just giving my view.
Going into this game, I thought EWU was more battle tested in having played OSU/Toledo and SHSU all on the road. They were ready for a big game rowdy noisy atmosphere. As far as 1 penalty costing UM the game (TD called back), don't forget EWU also had a 3rd down roughing the passer in the 1st that led to a 3-0 score. Then they had an unsportsman like penalty that would have led to a Griz 3 and 24, but gave them a 1st down which led to 7 points. that 10 points on STUPID penalties! There was also a catch by Mitchell in the 4th for 20 plus yards and a 1st down that was ruled as bobbled, but replay showed he had possession, another game changer. But that's life without replay, oh well.
The Griz had a great 4th qtr comeback, but had EWU not had a 25 point (4 possession lead), they would have continued on what they were doing on off/def instead of playing prevent Def. and a non-aggressive Off. They were playing NOT to lose at that point, which almost lost them the game.
Yes, in a perfect world the Griz could have pulled out a 44-42 win, but football is a lot like golf, "If I just wouldn't have drove that one OB or missed those 4 three foot putts, I would have won the Masters, LOL!" OK, i'm getting side track.
Next, The Griz always want to establish there run game first, then set up the playaction, that's plain and simple Griz football. It's worked 88% of the time at WA-Griz stadium and on the road the last 25 years.
Next, Eastern uses the pass to set up the run, that's our game plan. That's how both these coaches call there game plan, but MUST adapt throughout the game.
Lastly, and I'm not being at all disrespectful here, The Griz didn't almost win this game, Eastern tried as hard as they could to lose it.
Two great teams in the BSC, a classic.
Also, the Griz fell a spot or 2 in the polls because they lost at home.
Thanks for the great hospitality while at the game and in Missoula.
Hope I wasn't an ass with this post. Thanks Talon38
Talon, nice post. I think you're spot on except... In the 4th Qt. I don't think EWU's offense went non-aggressive. I caught a replay of the 4th and Eastern was trying to run the offense they had been running in the first three quarters. Obviously Adams was trying to burn off as much of the clock as possible before each snap. That may have disrupted their flow. Yet the play calling was pretty much the same that had been so successful earlier. Though they didn't get the same results. It was an exciting game to watch. Congrats to the Eagles for taking the win.
