The 3-3-5 defense

I'd even add on have all your Linemen be in the 290-300lb range, they're supposed to soak up blocks and let the LBs use their speed.
I’ve never ever been a fan of 3 man fronts. But even with a 4 man front you’re probably only going to have 2 guys in the range you’re talking about, your nose and your 3 technique.

In my opinion you at minimum for the this scheme to be elite, you need elite nose tackle than can take on constant double teams and run stop, two elite linebackers who can pass rush like DEs, two island corners, and a run stopping safety.

Agree-- the problem is we don't live in a perfect world with perfect recruits--Gubner and O'Connell were the UM unicorns !!!

The 3-3-5 is garbage, there is a reason why no one runs it in college and the NFL besides our genius coaching staff. 4-3 would be ideal but 3-4 would be better if you need to have a 3 man front. The 3 man front makes us weak on the defensive line.
There are a few colleges running the 3-3-5. TCU runs it, Florida st runs it. Tony White is the DC there. But your point is correct. The 4-3 is a thing of the past. The 4-2-5 is being run in college and the nfl more and more.

Hoops will be along any minute to tell you that the 3-3-5 is the greatest defense ever and that you are stupid because you didn’t play the game 50+ years ago.

This is a pretty good video on the highly vaunted 3-3-5 defense as run by Tony White. Coach White learned it the same place Hauck learned it, Rocky Long at SDSU. But it got its start in the 80’s as an innovative way for coach Joe Lee Dunn at New Mexico to deal with the shortcomings of his defensive line recruits who, though athletic, were undersized. Over the last 40 years it’s morphed into the garbage that’s become the Achilles heal of the Griz that we know it to be…
Just my opinion after the fact, but MSU/NDSU/SDSU/Illinois State all have massive athletic OL's.

UM was exposed all year. If that team intends on actually being competitive with MSU in the future, it's time the defense changes.

In order to adapt to the monster OL's UM is facing, they are going to have to go to the 4-3 with a Nickle mix for passing teams. The DL MUST get bigger.

The 3-3-5 is a terrible defense that worked back when the Big Sky was a mostly passing conference. The game evolves but BH's coaching and recruiting hasn't.

Agree with everything but the idea that we need a 4-3. A 4-2-5 would be perfect especially with the right safeties

I, also, support your comment as well as the others who did the same.

Thanks Rob for posting the video and leading to this very educational thread. Yes.... Can't wait for hoops to come along and show much more he knows.
