Tell me about Missoula

Looking forward to some cool weather! It’s 114 here today and 118 tomorrow! Sounds like a beautiful place with many exciting adventures and sites to see. Thank you all for all the tips. Sean’s Mom...Kim

absolutely have to go to glacier. It makes yellowstone look like a kiddy park. drive the going to the sun road. you can either stay up there somewhere or do a long day trip. stop along flathead lake to grab some flathead cherries.

Disagree. They are both unique and bear spending some time in. Offseason of course.

Agree. While Glacier may generally be more "awe" inspiring, Yellowstone has its own unique beauty that is unlike anywhere else in America.

glacier, yellowstone, waterton, the cascades, etc... love those places. alas, everything kinda changed when i first visited the himalayas. holy cow.

What I love most about Missoula besides the Griz football games are the numerous great food and beverage establishments and the people!!

Welcome and have fun, you’ll quickly fall in love with Missoula and Montana in general!!

You will LOVE all the restaurants downtown. You really can’t go wrong. The Pearl is at the top of the list.

Be warned, you will be tempted to look at property after spending a week in Missoula in the summer. You won’t want to leave. Sean will have the best college experience possible.

On your way north into the Flathead put your debauched Missoula memories behind you with a spiritual reawakening at the Buddhist Temple in Arlee. Then give it all up a few more miles down the road at the Windmill Village Bakery in Ravalli noshing on their world famous cinnamon rolls... Super folks, supplying me last year with an onion poultice for a bee sting. :thumb:

The Reno Cafe in East Missoula is tough to beat for a down-home greasy spoon, hangover curing breakfast.

Is there such a thing as Hogieville cheese fries without the cheese? Did I read that right? Why-O-why? Sounds like having sex but with no touching.
I love how all the MT Clubs serve hoagie cheese fries now.

To the OP, someone mentioned the P-burg scenic loop (MSLA to Hamilton, over the pass to P-burg and back down I90 to MSLA). I think you could do that in a day. A very long day. Pburg is a fun town for tourists (brewery, bbq, candy shop, etc). That would be a cool day trip with lots of scenery and fishing options. But, I agree with the others, I don’t think you can really do Glacier in a day trip, if your base camp is in Missoula. Better off getting a hotel up there somewhere

all cat-griz crap aside, Missoula is a fun place. never had a bad time there. you'll love your time there and likely wherever you visit.

**disclaimer...this requires serious prep work the night before.

Only 5 days, here, and you want to float the rivers? Forget Yellowstone & Glacier Parks, not that they're not worth the trip, but you only have 5 days. I guess if you're young & energetic enough, taking in all the places suggested could be done. If your son is joining the Griz, you'll have more time, later, to explore Missoula & Western MT.

For wet suits for floating, try https://www.facebook.com/GullDiveCenter/. Oh, and avoid The Missoula Club for its putative hamburger "excellence," which is only a patty and an onion on a toasted bun. You have to be about 3 sheets to the wind to enjoy it.

The Shack for breakfast is well recommended. The Depot is great for dinners, altho a bit pricey. Double Front for fried chicken is a good experience. For excellent pizzas, Howard's Pizza on South Ave., altho small and modest, has the best pizza around, IMO. For breakfasts, you might also try Paul's Pancake Parlor in the Tremper's Shopping Center on S. Brooks. It's a big fan of the Griz.

I just suggest exploring the Missoula area & doing the floating in the 5 brief days you have. There will be later times to expand out. This time of year, you can't beat Western MT, mid-May to mid-Sept. Outside of those dates, all bets are off.

I second AZ - Mo Club's burgers are the best in town.

If you're looking for an easy day drive consider going up or down Highway 93.

South is down to Hamilton, the Bitterroot Mountains are awesome and there's tons of easy and nice day hikes all through them. The drive is dotted with small towns that have that fun/funky western Montana vibe with Hamilton being the biggest town. If you go that way get a burger at Naps. Both sides of the valley are surrounded by public lands. You could go further down beyond Hamilton and drive up the west fork of the Bitterroot to Alta, stunning up there.

North is a busier route but the Mission mountains are some of the best you'll see. Once again there's some smaller towns that dot the highway, St. Ignatius has an historic Mission that's cool to see. Get up to Polson and spend a day around the bay there. Hit Cherries BBQ Pit up there. Get out on the water and enjoy Flathead Lake!

I don't believe anyone has mentioned Lolo Creek Steakhouse as a good place for dinner. Lolo Peak Brewery is fun too.

Thanks for all the great info, since we are driving up from AZ, we will forgo any more driving than needed this trip..lol.
If you see someone that looks like Bruce Arians up there in about 10 days come say hi.

Can’t possibly go wrong with a Higher Ground Brewery and stone fired pizza in Hamilton.

Their pizza is damn good
