Well I've heard rumor that a former NFL player is interested in coaching the d-line but it's just a rumor. So, my rumor is better than your rumor!!
My rumor is also a ex NFL player.....but did not play Dline so doesn't make sense to me. I see two positional hires needed, if Semore is DC. One is Dline, but just because a guy played in NFL at a different position doesn't mean a great Dline hire...TheRadiers said:Well I've heard rumor that a former NFL player is interested in coaching the d-line but it's just a rumor. BWahlberg said:He's currently helping with special teams and if (as most presume) Semore is named the DC then this guy will probably take the ST job at the very least. I don't think he has any experience coaching D-line so not sure if he'd pull that duty as well... I could see Semore continuing to work with the safeties - much like Breske did when he was last here.

So who is going to coach the dline? Pretty important hire.

Me.
I submitted my scouting reports to Coach Stitt, showed him some fancy charts and graphs, and he was really impressed with how well I can identify who is going to become a great player and who has a good skill set.

I will give my stamp if approval if you agree we need a crew of big dominating DT's to compete for a title against smash mouth teams you eventually face on the road to a title.

First of all, Tonga was probably a little bit of a fluke coming to UM. I don't really know the story but 300lb plus guys that can move are few and far between in all of football. Does NDSU even have that type of player on their roster? Maybe their approach is different....

NDSU listed 5 DT's bigger than our biggest (who was 275). They did have one "little one" at 274... but only a freshman so likely 290+ when breaks the lineup. Jacksonville lists their top 4 as 290, 300, 322, 330. Jacksonville has gone the FBS route...started season with 4 SEC transfers on the dline, now only 3 due to injury.

Well that's an interesting match up. We'll see what happens. I do agree with your assessment of UM's DT needs.

I predict Jacksonville by 17. NDSU would have a chance in Fargo, but not on neutral field
havgrizfan said:What exactly is a top-level FCS defensive tackle recruit vs an FBS defensive tackle recruit? I don't see the difference. If you're 300 pounds and have decent footwork at the high school level, you are an FBS recruit at DT. Sure, some of them go to places like North Texas, the MAC and the Sun Belt, places where some Griz fans think they shouldn't go, or the Baker kid who took a last-minute ride to New Mexico over the Griz last year. But, they are still FBS recruits.
DT and CB are almost impossible for the FCS schools, even Montana and North Dakota state, to get what we would consider "top-level" recruits. You have to get lucky with the next level down of player and hope you can coach them up and strength and condition them up. Sure, every once in a while, a Trumaine Johnson comes your way at corner, but honestly, even for UM or NDSU or EWU, how often is that? Even Tonga only started full time for two years. He never beat out Bienneman for the starting NT job. Did it turn out that Tonga could have played NT at the FBS level? I think the answer is yes. But, he didn't start out that way. He was recruited mostly by FCS schools, sat his time, was coached up by Legi and others, and was a force by his late sophomore, full-time junior year.

Any eligibility left? Player coach perhaps?
