Stuart Mayes

Can the Coaches keep this guy off the floor. I was at the game last night and he just dominated while he was in. I don't care how deep we are, Mayes showed overall talent that is maybe shared by a couple starters. He shoots well, is a good ball handler and passer, and he goes hard to the boards for rebounds. He is a tough defensive player too. I think this guy could be a star.

Why wasn't he playing much before? Attitude issues or something?

I have not heard anything about attitude issues. In fact, during pre-game intros- Stuart waits for each starter at the end of the line and greets them as they are introduced. The GRIZ are extremely deep at the 2 and 3 positions. They have Criswell, Matthews, and Dlouhy. Martin also plays some at the 2. It is extremely hard to keep either Criswell or Matthews off of the floor. I'm sure these 2 guys lead the GRIZ in minutes played (along with Strait). I really hope Stuart (and Swift) hang in there. Next year Criswell and Matthews will be gone. I would no be at all suprised to see Mayes start and both Mayes and Swift get major minutes.

He got in Krysko's doghouse a few weeks ago and has worked his butt off to get out of it. I think he kind of went through some of the same things Mathews and Ellis have both gone through. It is not unusual for JC transfers. Krysko is very pleased with the attitude and effort Mayes has shown.

The Griz have a lot of depth. With the schedule the way it is that depth is going to pay off. I don't think anyone else in the BSC is even close depth wise.

I was growing increasingly concerned about next season with almost no PT for Austin and Stuart.

Both of them coming in and doing so well is huge. And they did not just do well……. They were impressive!

Just for fun and curiosity.

I did a quick calculation on Mayes stats for the season verses his minutes played and compared to our best player Strait.

Strait has played 549 minutes, Mayes 72 minutes. That's 7.5 times more playing time for Strait. So l took Mayes stats just for fun and multiplied them by 7.5 to see where he stood. Here's how the two compared.

If Mayes played all 18 games and 549 minutes here is how he compares hypothetically.

Strait 17.4 points per game
Mayes 10.83 points per game

Strait 6.3 rebounds per game
Mayes 8.3 rebounds per game

Strait 1.4 assists per game
Mayes 2.08 assists per game

Strait .8 blocks per game
Mayes .8 blocks per game

Strait 1.3 turnovers a game
Mayes 2.08 turnovers a game

I agree that Mayes is going to be a great player if he keeps working hard (which he will, he is getting hungry).

But I am even more excited for Austin Swift, this kid has 3 more years of excellence ahead of him! (if he keeps working, which he will undoutedly do)
