Stock in Gragg, Gregorak as future HC just went up !!!

And grizindabox, I think we are heading there ... back to G R E A T !" after all of our troubles with a good, enthusiastic young head coach that knows GRIZ football, traditions, history, our current players, incoming recruits and Montana and the region, aka Scott Gragg or Ty Gregorak.

After our troubles, we are once again building momentum to return in the immediate years ahead to return to the top of The Big Sky and FCS football--conference and national championships !!!
You'll never reach great with anyone on this staff...

Anyone involved with the current staff should be gone. A losing season, a one and done, and a not exactly stellar season is NOT Griz Football. I'm not buying it. The defense has stepped up but the offense has fallen considerably. Our recruiting hasn't been all that great either. If I remember correctly, we didn't pick up one single O lineman last spring and look what we've got going now. I don't have to tell you guys that the O line is VITAL to any football program especially one that is a "running team". Yes, Canada got his 1000+ yards for the second season in a row and that's great, but didn't Chase have 3 solid 1000+ yard years? We lose 16 seniors next season... It seems the Griz have stumbled a bit losing last years guys. 2015 and a new era is just right around the corner. We need an experienced HC, not a "likely" good coach.

A rebuttal. The losing season was primarily attributable to not having JJ or any other qb with experience. Even with Montana, UM would have won several more games. The offense had very good numbers last year, and was certainly clicking last weekend. Losing the 2 starting tackles and the next guy up, playing with a 253-pound true frosh replacement, losing the expected starting TE, and losing 3 of the 4 top receivers, including an all-american, have severely impacted the offense. Hopefully, the O is continuing to improve and is now picking up steam.

What makes you think UM would be a running team after Delaney is gone? That's not my guess.

Bringing in a head coach from a lesser or low level program, especially one without connections to UM, Montana, and/or the northwestern recruiting area, is not without risk--in fact significant risk. TG is already here, a great recruiter, and a known commodity. Would more than hit the ground running. The others would not have those advantages. A coach like Baldwin, if interested, would be a step up from the others being mentioned and would have less risk.

I have concerns about next year, due to the loss of JJ and some other good players. Any coach is going to have to deal with that. UM signed only 10 schollie guys, I believe, due to lack of schollies. I'm pretty sure there was at least one lineman. In any event, how can you blame that on TG? He wasn't the head coach.

Getting the schollies back and getting the weight/locker room building built will be very important to getting back to greatness. No incoming coach is going to be able to speed up that process. Delaney may stay involved with fund-raising after he retires. I assume he'd be more motivated with a coach he's comfortable with.

:thumb: it's amazing that so many posters talk like some mystical outside hire HC is going to replace every young or inexperienced player on the roster with All-American talent by the NDSU kickoff. We only have so much in the way of change available. No matter who it is we are looking at a couple years to see what they can really accomplish. And we will lose a game or two along the way. And they will bitch.

Better chance of getting back to great faster with TG, than with others. Note the faster part.

Player, I don't agree about Ty returning the program to greatness faster. We don't know who may apply until the search is completed. That is, if there is a search or just window dressing.

In many if not most cases the offensive minded coach is the guy that usually ends up as the head coach. The coach we need is a man with very good offensive skills and also has the ability to manage assistants. He becomes similar to most head managers of companies CEOs and as such gives guidance to his assistants.

I admit I am a friend of Ty and his wife. I like them both very much and I hope she ends up the head volley ball coach. I'd love to see Gregorak stay on as an assistant for a few years and in time I think he would make a good head coach. If he gets the nod right now I will be surprised mostly from his lack of overall experience. I like the job he has done with our LBs and it looks like we will be excellent at that spot for a period. His coaching of the entire defense has improved from day one. If he ends up as the head man expect some growing pains. I tend to worry about our offensive coaching and that would be my big concern to start with. He is a long shot but who knows?

Gragg? Very nice man. I'd worry a lot if he is the new head coach.

Whoever said the Griz didn't sign any offensive linemen in the last recruiting class, that's just flat out wrong. Robert Luke (6-4, 315), David Reese (6-7, 270) and Roscoe Ally (6-4, 275) were all three part of the 2014 Class. So I'm not sure the "As I recall, we didn't sign any offensive linemen last spring" comes from. Geez. There was also a University of Washington RS frosh that was supposed to transfer to UM that decided to go the junior college route instead. That's not exactly this coaching staff's fault. As is Trevor Poole or Schmaing, but that horse has been beat to death.

I agree with PlayerRep about the hits we took this year: Trevor Poole's slipped disk, John Schmaing's unfortunate family health problems and his subsequent academic suspension--I for one think the NCAA should have granted him the waiver, but because of our recent problems and loss of 4 scholarships, they didn't grant it.--Sam Kalenki's decision to quit, and Ellis Henderson's season-ending stomach virus were all formidable obstacles. We lost our two best O lineman before the season began and our best receiver shortly thereafter.

And despite all of that-- a small, undersized O line without Poole and Schmaing and no Ellis to play opposite of Jamal Jones, I think we have held up pretty well !!!

And Buttegrizzle is also right--unless we receive divine intervention and Jesus Christ becomes our next football coach, the new coach will make some mistakes and errors.

I think that given the fact that Scott has been here 5 years, has helped in all facets of coaching, his offense is finally clicking despite the big losses of talent on the line and at receiver, and Ty's D this year has been outstanding for the most part, excluding Cal-Poly, and the two of them have the respect and admiration of both our current players and incoming recruits, we lose less momentum and have a better chance of continuing last and this year's mo with Scott or Ty as opposed to a coach who's total experience in Montana and the NW consists of a visit to Glacier and Yellowstone when he was 11 years old.

Billings, since you are so high on these two guys, maybe Haslam should promote them to co- head coaches? :thumb:

Well, both Gragg's offense and Ty's D did nothing to disqualify themselves as our next HC against SD. Yes, I know, San Diego is a non-scholarship program, so we should have won big, and we did, and most of our kids got to play.

I know we go into Cheney as the underdog, still I like our chances if the O continues to run 3 to 4 zone-read plays so that Eastern has to account for Jordy or he can sprint down the field on them like he did against the Shi##y Kitties, and the rest of our run game clicks to go along with our passing game so that we can control the clock a little.

And hopefully, Ty cleans up the D vs. the pass--I noticed in Game # 1 against Eastern, that Hermy would take the tight end instead of playing over the top against Kupp and we got burned. Hopefully, that doesn't happen Saturday.

I hope we have a coach within about 2-3 weeks for recruiting. Pflu wasn't hired until Dec. 31 in 2009, and he said that was a tough obstacle in recruiting with our competition getting a month + head start on us. ( I know it helps that we have 10-11 kids that have committed, but almost all of those are verbals and the longer we don't have a HC, the greater the chance that one or a couple of them decide to go elsewhere. )

We have some great candidates in Craig Paulsen, Bobby Hauck, Tim Hauck, Andy Thompson, Mike Breske, provided that they are interested in the job.

If we win this Saturday, Scott Gragg and Ty Gregorak are going to be tough to ignore. Hopefully, a win over Eastern--I know that is a huge "IF," puts them in contention as a finalist and both of them get an interview. IF we win, I think that happens !!!

Another week, another win, a little more Mo behind Gragg and Gregorak for HC, and the fact that the recruiting clock is ticking and our competition, both regional FBS and FCS schools with no December football ahead of them, are going to be hitting the recruiting trail hard !!!

Kent Haslam has to balance the need to make a prudent choice with the sense of urgency coming from the recruiting clock ticking and our competition not sitting on their hands because we are in the playoffs and don't know yet who are next HC will be.

Its just too bad you don't want to find the best head coach.

We have 12 verbals. Granted they could change their minds, but if they verbaled, they probably will hang on for another few days until a coach is hired and can visit with them. Haslem has no doubt talked to them. They may know more than we do!

I do want to find the best head coach, grizindabox, but we do not have until Jan. or Feb. to do it !!! And we have two excellent candidates in Gragg and Gregorak, and a win on Saturday--I know Baldwin, Adams, Kupp, etc., will have a lot to say about that possibility--makes them impossible to ignore and not interview.

A win over Eastern is hypothetical, so until we can go into Cheney and beat Eastern on that God-awful red turf, they are The Big Sky's big dog with us hot on their heels !!!

Who would you want them to go after?

billings, it won't take any longer to find an outside candidate than it would to promote from the current staff...Haslem has already had 2+ weeks.

That's not true. A promotion from within could be announced immediately, and Hauck could be hired immediately after an interview, which could happen almost immediately. Not saying this should or will be done, but it could be done that way.

You are right maroonandsilver--I am sure there is a lot going on behind the scenes, there almost has to be for our coaching search to end soon in a timely manner.

I am hoping by the end of next week, we have a new head coach, and we could very well have one towards the beginning of the week, with the possibility of an announcement even coming this week if Scott or Ty has been promoted.

This is Week 3 of the search, as grizindabox has noted.

All of this is speculation on my part--I do know one of Bobby's cousins here in Billings--helluva nice guy !!! Hopefully, I will run into him downtown soon so I can ask him if he has heard anything about Bobby and/or Tim.

Amen, PlayerRep, and to me--wild speculation on my part--but if it is Scott or Ty, why not announce it this week before heading to Cheney !!! Maybe I am on the wrong frequency, but I think that would send a message to the kids and returning players of the confidence AD Haslam has in Mick and his lieutenants, Scott and Ty. I guess on the downside, it could be a bit distracting as well, but I think the good of such an announcement would outweigh the bad !!!

Again, I have absolutely zero inside information--just speculation on my part.

I think you can take Scott off the board.
