Spring Scrimmage #1 wrap up

As far as the O-line, I saw a bunch of the 2nd 's (please names not good with me) really hustling, may have some competition coming.

I think you have to keep it in perspective with this offensive line right now. There's a certain new Defensive Coordinator who knows Stitt's offense and tendencies quite well (okay better than anyone) and was probably making all kinds of calls to disrupt it. They also hardly ran Nyugen or Calhoun. One cannot make a judgment on our O line yet based on one scrimmage with those factors at play. Patience young butterflies.

Personally, I'd rather have our defense dominating the spring scrimmages rather than the other way around. For example, just look at MSU and EWU last year... their offenses were lighting up the scoreboard on their defense, and look how the season turned out.

Some of my impressions from watching the scrimmage : Our D line will likely be better this year than last. Yes we lost Holmes, but Kidder, Johnson, and Schye have all improved, imo. Kidder looks more cut, Schye looks bigger. Davidson's size and strength adds another component we maybe missed last year; big interior dudes that can push back O-lines. Lots of talent in the secondary with Williams, Sandry (I think he rung his bell towards the end), Sanders, and Strong coming in. Gonna be a battle at safety. Colby Eaton has a very bright future. Smooth, tall, fast, gonna be a big-play threat for sure. Bingham will be a good guy running slants and post stop routes, he can basically block out a cornerback, and has strong hands. I'll say Eaton, Horner, Homan, Ralston, Curran, and Lyons will be our main guys this year at wr with some Bingham and Jerry Louis Magee sprinkled in.

For those worried about the running game, Stitt's quote about good things and bad things sums it up...basically, would you rather our running backs be gashing our defense for big plays or steamrolling the d-line for 5 yards a pop? Because you can't have it both ways. Hart played some right tackle and did a decent job. Weyer will be a nice addition. O-line is much bigger than last year. I'm not really hoping or expecting our offense to run the ball down our defenses throat because I would rather the defense have the advantage in the trenches at this point. Improving offensive execution is the most important part right now. A lot of putting up points against good teams is a matter of exploiting them, not necessarily running the ball three times in a row for no gain, ie Delaney, just because you're trying to prove a point. So in regards to the skewed pass ratio, I expect it will depend on the team we play. I don't think teams will run the ball well on our defense.

QB should be interesting...I was actually impressed with Phillips other than his turnover. He has good feet and actually throws a really nice ball. No predictions, just that the qb position will be solid, and that's always a good thing.

Punting was embarrasing.

The defense had some missed assignments that resulted in big plays, but they hit hard, tackle well, and the scheme is very aggressive, safety blitzes and all. It's pointless getting worked up over one thing or another at this point. Looking at this TEAM in the big picture, they seem very good. As others have mentioned, they are way ahead of last year's team at this point. Taking offense and defense into consideration, I think this is just a better overall team than last year. Lots to be excited about...We shall see.

Brint, do you feel the run game wasn't "there" due to the blocking schemes? Or the runners themselves? I didn't really read much in regard to the offensive line so was curious. Thanks!

Good question Brint (or anyone), can you add a little on what you think needs to change/improve to make the run game more productive, play calling, rbs or oline or maybe just experience?

Yes how did the o-line look?
I wonder if Nguyen and Calhoun would have had more success with more then 2 carries each?

:shock: For the love of God, will someone please tell us about the O-line? That seemed to be the biggest concern and NO one wants to talk about it. 48 yards on 17 carries by the RB's and NINE sacks? Where all of our real 1st teamers out there? Was anyone missing? Were some of them laying down asleep when the ball was snapped? We need answeres people!

O-line wasn't run blocking the best but I also noticed (as the stats show) that Stitt played Nguyen for just a handful of snaps and Calhoun for maybe 3 series. The rest were for Favors and McCombs. Could it be that he's lightening the load on his would-be starters? Tough to say.

Of the OL they had a 4th and 1 attempt with a sweep to the right, Dietrich and Thiebes's side that went for a loss. Not good.

Interior runs weren't the greatest either, as we can see the QB's had the most rushing yards. And to be honest I think it was Phillips longest run, he was actually sacked by Kidder (touched) but the ref didn't stop the play.

Caleb Kidder is a DOMINANT player. If he stays healthy, he'll get drafted. Beast.

Kidder is a DE again, a little leaner and has gained a lot more muscle. The guy is wrecking ball. Additionally his counterpart D-end, Ryan Johnson, had a field day too. Johnson is an incredibly versatile player and has taken the role that Holmes had in the 2nd half of the season. Last night Johnson rarely had his hands on the ground pre-snap. It worked really well defensively.

That is interesting (and good news) to hear Kidder is back at DE. With the many additions to the DT position, it should be fun seeing Kidder coming off the edge. I could envision them using Kidder similar to how Seattle uses Michael Bennett; outside on 1st & 2nd down, then move him inside on obvious 3rd down passing situations and bring in another speed rusher at DE.
