Spring Scrimmage #1 wrap up

Brint, do you feel the run game wasn't "there" due to the blocking schemes? Or the runners themselves? I didn't really read much in regard to the offensive line so was curious. Thanks!
Good question Brint (or anyone), can you add a little on what you think needs to change/improve to make the run game more productive, play calling, rbs or oline or maybe just experience?

Yes how did the o-line look?
I wonder if Nguyen and Calhoun would have had more success with more then 2 carries each?

Uh... do we even HAVE a run game? Last year's leading rusher, Nguyen, carried twice for one yard? Hmmm... We need to hope for more.

This is great to follow. I'm super excited to hopefully be able to watch the Griz live this year. If I'm still in Missouri, I'll be at N. Iowa. If I move to Idaho, which is possible, will be at many more games. This gets me excited for a great season of football. Need the OL and secondary to come into it's own. Need a little back up/drop down in those 2 areas as well as DL in my opinion just based on what's on the roster. Can't wait for the next couple write ups in the coming weeks. Thanks to all who contribute to this stuff for those of us that can't make it. Really do appreciate it!

 For the love of God, will someone please tell us about the O-line? That seemed to be the biggest concern and NO one wants to talk about it. 48 yards on 17 carries by the RB's and NINE sacks? Where all of our real 1st teamers out there? Was anyone missing? Were some of them laying down asleep when the ball was snapped? We need answeres people!

I think its safe to say the coaches know what Nguyen is capable of. No sense in giving a bunch of touches to an established starter in spring ball.

Did any of our DEs look like they could continue our tradition of having a dominant player at that spot?

Caleb Kidder is a DOMINANT player. If he stays healthy, he'll get drafted. Beast.

 Wait a second; I thought I read on here that the cupboard was left bare by previous coaches.

I think you can surmise that the level of improvement hoped for is still somewhat down the road. Nine sacks and 50 yds in rushing yards. How good do you think they looked?

Yes but hes going to be playing DT still I thought?

Watching the Griz o-line reminds me of this...

Love this Coach Stitt quote:

“The thing about spring ball is that when something good happens to your team, something bad happens as well,” said the second year mentor. “I like where we’re at. We’re going to be a very good team this year.”

That's pretty much the bottom line of spring ball. I'd guess you just want to see guys making plays on both sides of the ball, where the offense gets their's and the defense does too.

I think we've got an incredible group of RS. Frosh. Eaton, Bingham, and Calhoun will be playmakers at WR this year. Jerrin Williams and Sandry sound like they are already enforcers in the secondary. Dante Olsen and Fa'autuise (I tried) had their names called on lots of tackles, several for a loss.

Anyone notice Jesse Sims last night? I'd expect him to be RS Frosh that helps some this fall.

Not good I'm sure. Purposely blowing things a little out of proportion. Mostly wondering if anyone sat out and who played w/ the 1st team. The only names I seen were Todd and Kelly getting worked.

Thiebes, Dietrich, Luke, Todd and Reese we're starting last night. Ben Weyer should start at center in the fall rather than Luke, but he's non-contact this spring.

The OL physically looks like an OL this year. They are much bigger across the board. That said, they were getting worked by the D last night. Hopefully that says more about where the D is at rather than where the O is at. Obviously the O has more work to do establishing DOLA. There was very little run game and the front 7 was in the backfield on passing downs quickly. I will say that the defense is looking ferocious already. There are a lot of young studs on that D. The talent of Stitt's first recruiting class is showing already. Just need the O to gel and catch up.
