SPRING CAMP: Position Battles on Offense

Question: If JJ is back, acknowledging that McKinney is the 2nd best QB on the roster, does he become the next Gerald Kemp? Dude's got game and could really help this team in several areas...just not sure about having BOTH QB's on the field. In the event JJ were to get injured, I'd hate to see us have to hand the ball back to SSH.

I think that Brady G has more raw talent than both TM & SSH.. I wouldn't be suprised if he JJ's backup, if JJ comes back and plays..

Well, if THAT'S the case, then I definitely want McKinney on the field as a slot guy, RB, etc. He's dangerous with the ball in his hands...but more dangerous (in a bad way) when he throws it.

I vote for "this guy" at the QB position, even though he can't throw over 45 yards. He's quick on his feet, can find and hit the 2nd or 3rd when the primary is covered. He's a natural leader, calm under pressure, can make quick decisions AND he's tough. When he gets his head ripped off, he somehow makes his way back to the huddle. I've never seen any quit in "this guy".

JJ won't likely be dating anyone for awhile. His arm strength will likely improve - if you know what I mean. Throwing over 45 yards could become a non-issue. ;)

I agree.. He can definitely make plays running with the ball in his hands.

One early thing I like is the depth. I watched the Washington 3A basketball championship game last night; the winning team (Rainer Beach) plays 11 guys and there was no noticeable drop off as the coach substituted heavily. Depth was a bit of a problem (especially on offense) for the Griz last season. That could chance nicely for the better in 2013.

Depth is what I like about this offense. SUPER fast 2-deep which I'm just making up on the fly here shows just about all spots have experience.

QB - JJ / McKinney
RB - Canada / Van
FB - Counts / Hagfors?
WR - Henderson / Walcott
WR - Saylor / Haynes
WR - Warren / Naccarato
TE - Peirson / Richards
OT - Poole* / Schmiang
OG - Poehls / Kalekini
C - Oiland / Hines
OG - Hines / Todd
OT - Kistler / LaRowe

* assuming Poole does the right things to work his way back into the team come fall camp

So the edges are thin on the O-line, that's about it in terms of lack of experience (but not to be confused with ability to play at the FCS level)

if mckinney can hang on to the ball i bet he'd be a great punt returner.
Which brings up a good point: What about Special Teams?
You never know about kickers/punters, of course, but the roster looks pretty thin. Will we have a kicking game? Beyond that, we had way too many break-downs on coverage -- punt and KO -- and that has GOT to change.

On the other side, it would be nice if we had some good "field-position" punt/kick return guys. Obviously, it would be great if we had a game-breaker (ala Mariani), but a good solid return to give the offense good field position would be a big plus.
(Somewhat) :off:
Too bad we can't have a "position battle" at coach. Personally, I think the Griz have some damn good talent, but will go only as far as the coaching staff can think them. Coaching DOES matter. Last year's staff was absolutely pathetic at making half-time adjustments. That has got to change too.

After such a nasty winter in terms of (Griz slutball or should I say thugball) it is super to be talking real honest to God Griz football.

Thanks for the info and opinion Brit. We could have a good season as I am positive the coaches will be MUCH better this year. They have all had time to learn each other and learn more about each player.
I will first hand give Mick a bad time about calling time outs before punting and kicking and I doubt he will return to that issue. Could be a pretty damn good year, might be a big moon rising!

and if he cant it would be no different then the last couple years.
Ouch!

Which we can thank the NCAA for last season. They took fucking forever to clear Kemp over some damn rule change that impacted him. He would have been our main return man last year, all year.

we recruited speed this year in
Austin Carver, WR, 100 meter Class A Champion for Montana
Treshawn Favors, RB, according to Coach Green, "he's got that great speed and quick start, and stop-start"
Marq Rogers, WR, 48.1 400 meters, one of the fastest times in the prep ranks
Marquin Russell, CB 48.2 400 meters
Travon Van, RB, Coach Delaney-"He's physical and has great speed....he's going to be an immediate impact player for the Griz"

we also recruited some very good corners with
Ryan McKinley, CB, again Coach Delaney-"he's got really good speed...he's a physical football player"
Chris Parker, DB, sounds like he knows how to cover like Pounder 29 wants to cover, i hated that soft coverage as well....it just says..."go ahead throw on me, you have the odds in your favor" weak.
Marquin Russell had 4 interceptions last year returning 2 for TD's....when was the last time we saw the Griz do that?
and transfer Jamaal Anderson, CB, all-conference at cornerback as a freshman in 2011.

speed we have, at least to begin the season with, the question is what everyone is concerned about, is do we have a qb that can create plays and keep the defense thinking.
I am with the JJ and Trent camp but currently these two are on the outside and shay and brady are on the inside which smells like pocket quarterbacking and power bobby ball. yes good for ball control, but it does not win championships it just looks like a good game until you meet the team that is more diverse then you are playing catch up because they have a dynamic offense that keeps you guessing and has a mobile qb for an added dimension.
i sure hope that i missed this one because like others on this thread if we go back to the as RobGriz put it "Three yards and a cloud of boredom" type of game we are....you know.

so nutshell, we need a mobile qb that can make the reads and throw to these fast WR's and offensive coordinator that can call plays based on what they have seen on film and what they see on the field as opposed to calling plays based on limitaions, a defensive scheme that plays defense and not pass prevent, but actually teaches your CB's, DB's and Safties to play the ball, the rest I think we have a good chance of playing better than our opponents.

Haven't you heard. According to most of these guys we are now a two back, three yards and a cloud of bullsh1t team now

I don't think there should be any way that Smithwick-Hahn emerges from spring ball any higher than 3rd on the depth chart. He has the weakest arm of any of the quarterbacks, I saw no evidence that he throws a good deep ball last season. Just my opinion.

WHAT ABOUT DEFENSE (Brint???)...thats the side of the ball where championships are won & lost!
Our secondary needs some work in case anyone didn't notice.

How might Jordan Harper fit into the equation. He was listed as a wr on signing day, but wasn't he a TE in high school?
