Spokesman Review article, coach D thought it was 4th & 8

Did Coach D really say he thought it was fourth and eight?

If he did, my opinion of him (as a head coach) is going to skew dramatically. Sure, there've been instances in the past, but this would kind of be the one that broke my camel's back.

You guys need to realize that it was a very slow week in Spokane for sports: Gonzaga hoops hasn't tipped off (other than a Simon Frazier warm up) , Cougs had a bye week, Idaho was out of town getting a beat down and the Chiefs lost. John needs all the headlines he can get to try and spark interest for the football team in Cheney. Much like PSU, EWU sports is typically buried 3-5 pages back in the sports section.

Griz Fans,

You're in good company, no one I know in Spokane thinks much of Blanchette's journalistic abilities. He consistently writes articles that piss off EWU, WSU, GU, and UW fans. You'll be better off if you simply ignore this hack.

He's in completely wrong, EWU is one of the special Big Sky teams not THE special team. I can think of at least couple of other special BSC teams, one of which is Montana. Make no mistake about it the BSC is as good as it is today in large part due to the Griz.

You should be proud of your team for not giving up when it looked bleak. If you had another minute or so the outcome may have been different.

Griz Fans are a class act. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Missoula yesterday.

Best of luck to you, and beat the Cats.

Mike

Down 28-17 and we scored a touchdown but was called back for illegal use of hands to the face really killed us along with getting ZERO points off those interceptions.. Our coaching staff was in over their heads the entire game.

We still have the potential to lose at least 2 more games this year.. We'll be lucky to even host a playoff game let alone get into the playoffs..

We still have the potential to win out also...

This, and even if we drop one more, 9-3 should still be a lock for the playoffs. As for how far we'll make it with the level of coaching we've had, that's another story.

Four games now to make a statement...

As stated earlier, let jj call plays.....play with energy, urgency and passion of final minutes and think we would do better than our brain trust on sideline could do....

Playoffs or not, please can we get a new head coach? This staff lacks attention to detail, makes bad decisions, lacks creativity, and is way too stubborn to make the necessary changes.

Honestly looking at this years playcalling how far do you really expect to go? Once the team hits talented teams the coaching staff completely chokes and is outright confused at times on what to do.

It has been a horrendous 2 year stretch of non-stop attacks on UM football so the coaches deserve ALOT of credit for just sticking it out, supporting the student athletes and trying at least to do their jobs.

But reality is they need replaced in the coming year or so. Keeping the same coaches for the next 3 years will destroy recruiting.

Oh it's very true, the exception being that you might get some press this week since the Cougs play a Thursday night game and the Zags don't play until November 9th.

Why? So when jj leaves, the griz have lost another year and are really fucked?

Actually, UM has a very good coaching staff. Gregorak, Greene and Legi are considered young and rising superstars and will all end up at big programs. Kefense apparently has a terrific offensive mind. I can't imagine that Gragg isn't a good coach. Williams and Cookus are young, but the early returns are very good. Meyers is a first year coach, but he looks promising and the young receivers seem to be doing well. Brunelle is a first year coach. I assume he will do well too. Yes, Delaney is 70 and hasn't been a head coach for decades, but he's got a good staff and has pulled it all together.

It's easy to see that most of you have never coached the game.

From a professional standpoint, I'll just say, the guy wrote a column, it's an opinion column, and he's entitled to say whatever he wants without recourse. And often times, sports columns are written with the intent to ruffle feathers. I've caught myself doing it, but mostly I save column writing for something that I feel is an important issue which needs to be addressed.

Having said that, ANY college football journalist worth his salt would have left out the crowd noise stuff. ANY college football journalist worth his salt would have been around long enough to know that crowd noise is a part of the game, part of every great home field advantage, and is not "an act of desparation". He also made mention of the Griz players raising the arms to ask for crowd noise. WTF. That makes me question whether he has been to a college football game above the DII level before. And someone mentioned his is originally from Missoula? Well he obviously has never covered the Griz because crowd noise has been a pride of Wash-Griz since the day it opened, and it's a weekly thing, not just when Eastern Washington comes to town. And there have been a hell of a lot louder games then yesterday, so the whole "act of desparation thing" was pretty weak.

I mean seriously, "EWU is the Sky's "Special" team?" There's nothing special about them except the special education they're receiving. You guys are just a few pieces away from putting your puzzle together. And MSU has all but dominated the Sky for the last 3 years.

If they ever expand their stadium and get rid of that terrible turf and consistently beat both MT schools, then they might make such a claim. Until then, this puffery is a bit pre-mature much like his schadenfreude induced ejaculation.

The Crown Jewels of the Big Sky remain in the Treasure State regardless of what some creepy weirdo thinks.

Just my two cents

I've noticed a couple of disparaging posts of yours towards our program, so here's my :twocents:

First off, MSU has not "all but dominated the Big Sky" the past three years, or any three years, for that matter. "Dominating" would suggest that MSU won the conference outright during the period you referenced, which of course, you did not. You shared them with EWU in 2010 and 2012, and Montana in 2011. In fact, you have to go all the way back to the 1997 season to find a team other than Montana that has won the conference outright (EWU). If we are talking playoffs, in that same period you referenced, EWU has two National Semi-Final appearances, and one National Championship. MSU has not made it past the quarter-finals since 1984. What's more, MSU is no more "consistent" in beating EWU than EWU is in beating either of the Montana schools. Less, actually. You beat us in 2010 and 2011, but before that we beat you 7 or 8 times straight. Don't care to look which it is, just know it to be true. There is also the matter of the 26-10 overall record in the series.

With respect to Montana, EWU obviously cannot compare with the level of domination that they've enjoyed over the past 20 years or so. That said, we do have a higher winning percentage over them than anyone else, more wins at WA-Griz than anyone else (6), and have won 3 of the last 4 meetings with them. Those are no small feats.

Blanchette's article is not completely baseless, nor was it meant to piss anyone off. He is a UM grad, after all. It's an observation. Outside of Montana, EWU is by far the most succesful Big Sky team of the last 20 years when you are talking about winning percentage, playoff appearances, and playoff wins...4 National Player of the year awards, and on and on. Yeah, we know the stadium sucks, but it's getting better every year and there is also a very large-scale plan in place to expand the stadium, so maybe after that happens we'll be relevant in your eyes. Nevermind the success on the field, that doesn't matter apparently. I remember as recently as the early 00's when just a few hundred people were showing up to Cat games, so :coffee:

I respect the heck out of both Montana programs, but your post is baseless.

What you meant to say was the writer "has never covered a game". I agree, those points he made, or tied to make, were just plain dumb.

Twenty years? If you go back to 1993, then UM has one more championship than EWU has. I would agree over the last four years EWU has become a force, but don't push it back to the point you lose credibility.

Besides, according to the article, it shouldn't be that hard to fool Delaney and make him think the game is always in the fourth quarter so he can open up the passing game finally. Could you imagine a whole game like the two last fourth quarters?
