Any player has 4 years to play 5 and that redshirt can be used in ANY year. He can redshirt in any year if injured or is not needed on the depth chart. WIN now, redshirt later, AKA EWU for what its worth!! We've done this many times in the last 4 years.
Thank god someone had a rational thought........Jordan Johnson is one of the exceptions to the whole, "but you can take your redshirt after your true-freshman year" campaign.
Sure its true, but it hardly ever happens.
It's not a common occurrence but I'd say it happens a little more often than a "pretty slim" chance. Jordan Tripp, Brock Coyle, Clay Pierson, & Jordan Johnson have all done this. A lot of times it seems to happen to younger guys who maybe play as a true freshman but then get hurt or need a surgery in their 2nd season and miss that year and wind up using their RS then. Not a common occurrence but at any given time there's always a handful of guys that have done this on any given team.

True, but didn't Tripp and Coyle recieve medical redshirts?

Nevermind, looked it up. You are right. Still, its pretty rare, and the injury better have "good timing". :thumb:

He used his RS in 2012, so it makes no difference as of now.
Yes! Remember the posts in 2010 when his redshirt year was "burned". Kinda worked out in the end.
Who are you saying used their redshirt in 2012? Johnson? And how did JJ's redshirt work out in the end, unless he did redshirt last year. I don't believe last years ordeal was considered a redshirt for Johnson, more like a suspension (not technically but sort of), but may be wrong.
If JJ hadn't "played" in 2010 he would have another year of eligibility after next season so it does seem like that season of eligibility was a lost cause although it gave him experience and let him adjust to the speed of the game. It wasn't a pretty year for him by any means, including the short time he seen on the field and the way he played. I am glad he was able to learn from that experience and grow into the player he has become so maybe it helped him to see the field as a true freshman.
I don't even remotely understand your post. Last season was a redshirt for JJ. Are you saying that it wasn't?

Haha, agreed Hammer.
1Griz_fan here's the scenarios;
What happened, JJ plays in 2010 as a frosh, 2011 as a soph, sits in 2012 with his red shirt, plays in 2013 as a red shirt junior.
If he red-shirted in 2010, sits out 2010 as a red shirt, plays 2011 as RS frosh, sits out and loses a year in 2012, plays as a RS junior in 2013.
Same result. The only other route would be for him to not use his RS at all and then he'd be a senior this year.

I think he is going on the thought that if he had red shirted in 2010, then last year when he got suspended he would've had three years of eligibility left...but that makes the assumption that he would've applied for and been granted some sort of hardship from the NCAA, 6 years to play 4 rather than 5 for 4...there is some precedence for that (Jimmy Wilson, for one) but with the NCAA there are no guarantees...
