Rule changes in BSC??

Just curious, was vans play in the 2nd qtr a fumble? Looked to me, 2 feet down, started to spin and then the ball came out...

That play was almost certainly a fumble, but the hit that knocked the ball out was pretty close to being a targeting call. Van was hit was helmet to helmet right as he got the ball and it looked like other hits I've seen called. (I don't think it was a dirty play, and it would have been a bit unfair to EWU to call it targeting, but the way games are called these days...)

Was definitely a fumble, and the EWU defender definitely could have been called for targeting because he led with the crown of his helmet.

BSC refs are pretty lousy and missed some calls yesterday, the most obvious one being the TD that should have gone for the Griz. I'll be really glad when the Big Sky gets replay next year (with the apparent exception of CP and Davis since they are football only members)?

Anyway, every team in the conference has to deal with these shitty refs. In 2007 and 2009 EWU lost narrow games to the Griz in Missoula in which there was questionable officiating. I don't remember any outrage on Egriz back then about those shitty calls. The 2009 EWU/UM game had such aggregious calls that the BSC officially admitted that there were officiating errors in the game. In 2011 Demetrius Bronson crossed the goal line not once, but twice and no TD was called...next play Mitchell throws an INT and the rest is history. There was a reason the replay wasn't shown in WA-Griz.

All of those games were very close and could have gone either way.

The point is, apparently in the BSC you have to be good enough to beat both the other team AND the refs. I think replay will help.

Maybe some of you need to read the rules on holding, so you do not keep looking bad like you do when you complain about the referees every week a game does not go the Griz way. Good teams win regardless of the refs. Win with class, loose with class.

The only bitch fans on both sides have is, BIG SKY OFFICIATING IS HORRIBLE! Something has to be done to get it right. Yes, sports fans, the calls or lack of were bad both ways yesterday, but how is that different than any other Big Sky Game? Instant replay will help, but it will not be the cure all! These officials have been bad for a long time and seems like they are getting worse. However, they are not all bad. I do not know the names of any of the officials, but the older gentleman who was the lead ref for the Cat/portland game is, in my opinion one of the best in the Big Sky!
As fans, we can bitch all we want, the outcome is the same and will not change, so enjoy being discontended if that makes you happy. I am setting my sights on the upcoming week and thinking about the positives!
Congrats to Eastern on your victory over our Griz!
Maybe next year!

Go Griz!

Here this will help educate some of you loud mouths that are clearly in the dark.

Holding
Second, a lot of emphasis is placed upon point of attack. As I've explained, the referee and umpire are going to watch the play flow. They're not going to worry about the opposite side. If they see something on the opposite side, for example, a hold, they will tell a player that it would have been a hold had it been in the point of attack as a warning or to instruct the player. This technique is called preventive officiating and by doing this the player is aware that the officials are watching him closely.

Third, calls have a lot to do with advantage and disadvantage, i.e., if a player gets an advantage on another player because of an illegal move (a hold, for example), then it's a foul. If they do not, it's not a foul. This will become more apparent in our section on holding.

I agree!
However.....absolutely no excuse for missing not just one foot in, but two feet in and neither pin stripe saw it. Just terrible.
It wasn't the difference, but it could have made a difference in momentum, play calling, etc.
Hope to have better luck next year!
Go Griz!

There is no excuse. Unfortunately, it's not the first time and won't be the last. Hopefully replay sorts a lot of this stuff out. The BSC really should have taken cue from the CAA and MVFC and instituted it this year.

OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 20, 2009) - Following a review of the Eastern Washington-University of Montana Big Sky Conference football game, the league has issued a statement in regards to the contest’s quality of officiating.
Third-ranked Montana beat Eastern Washington 41-34 in Missoula on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“The officiating in Saturday’s EWU-UM game was not up to the standards we expect and require,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. “Our officials are evaluated on every play of every game by observers in the stadium and by independent film evaluators - many with NFL experience - following the games. There are consequences for officials after they are examined.’’
Several plays were reviewed by the conference, its director of football officials Doug Toole, and independent observers. The league found two calls against Eastern Washington particularly troubling.
In the fourth quarter, an Eastern Washington player was called for a late hit out of bounds. The penalized player, however, was illegally blocked in the back by a Montana player, propelling him in to a Montana player out of bounds.
Late in the third quarter an Eastern Washington wide receiver was called for unsportsmanlike conduct as he slowed down on his way to the end zone. His actions, however, did not warrant the penalty.

“We continue to examine at least four more plays,’’ said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. “We don’t normally comment on officiating, nor do we plan to regularly do so in the future. However, there are cases where it is warranted, and this is one.’’
“We’re disappointed about the performance, but like the student-athletes and coaches who play the game, we look forward to the next game and getting it right,’’ Fullerton added. “I believe our officiating ranks among the best in the Football Championship Subdivision, if not all of Division I football.”

It wasnt Van, and Jones appeared to maybe juggle it, and then it came out, he did not get 2 steps down with control of the ball, but it was a very close play. It still does not change the fact that the Eagles got away with holding and pass interference on many plays.
