That play was almost certainly a fumble, but the hit that knocked the ball out was pretty close to being a targeting call. Van was hit was helmet to helmet right as he got the ball and it looked like other hits I've seen called. (I don't think it was a dirty play, and it would have been a bit unfair to EWU to call it targeting, but the way games are called these days...)
Was definitely a fumble, and the EWU defender definitely could have been called for targeting because he led with the crown of his helmet.
BSC refs are pretty lousy and missed some calls yesterday, the most obvious one being the TD that should have gone for the Griz. I'll be really glad when the Big Sky gets replay next year (with the apparent exception of CP and Davis since they are football only members)?
Anyway, every team in the conference has to deal with these shitty refs. In 2007 and 2009 EWU lost narrow games to the Griz in Missoula in which there was questionable officiating. I don't remember any outrage on Egriz back then about those shitty calls. The 2009 EWU/UM game had such aggregious calls that the BSC officially admitted that there were officiating errors in the game. In 2011 Demetrius Bronson crossed the goal line not once, but twice and no TD was called...next play Mitchell throws an INT and the rest is history. There was a reason the replay wasn't shown in WA-Griz.
All of those games were very close and could have gone either way.
The point is, apparently in the BSC you have to be good enough to beat both the other team AND the refs. I think replay will help.
