Roy Booker

Ex-Griz Roy Booker is on ESPN2 right now with his Southeast Missouri team. He just hit his 22nd point, which is his season average (he's leading Ohio Valley conference.) Made me wonder: Anyone know why he left UM? Obviously, he has some talent.

Some kind of trouble with fighting and I think a gun. Same incident got one of our football players booted too. Was it Vernon Smith? Someone will remember the exact details.

I asked the coaches that summer why Booker left, they said he didn't want to buy into the program - sounded like he didn't want his role to be defense and passing the ball. Sounds like he made the right decision for himself.

Just going by my recollection of the rumors, I don't think Roy was the one with the gun. He is very talented and was fun to watch.. However, his scholarship ended up going to Virgil Matthews. I think Virgil is a better fit for what Krysko is building here. Virgil has a heck of a lot to do with the GRIZ success thus far this season. :thumb:

He finished with 26 points, but was 5-14. He looked like a shoot first, pass later kind of player. Didn't seem much interested in defense, either.

Didn't we play Southeast Missouri the last two seasons before this one? I wonder if there is some connection...

Yes. At their place last year, and in the holiday tournament that was hosted by Montana two years ago. Booker played some in the game two years ago, but had to sit out last year due to transfer rules.

Not sure there would be a connection.

I think its as simple as this: He left because he wasn't going to get his shots here. Criswell was ahead of him at the 2 guard and he wasn't ever going to take 10+ shots/game. Even Kennedy wasn't going to allow that to happen.

He's from that area as well, and I think the distance and difference in cultrue got to him a little bit. It had nothing to do with any kind of gun/misconduct incident.
