Rose Colored Glasses Are Off...Griz Will Take a Step Back

cclarkblues said:
So the cryptic "G" is Everett's "Rosebud". We may never know what he meant...

Interestingly, not knowing if such usage was as a 'leitmotif,' or not, but there once was a 10" 78 rpm single-sided recording released on the Columbia Label (Catalog Number 3543), about February 1907, with a vocalist named Billy Murray and the Track was entitled "Rose Bud;" with a subtitle "Call and I'll Come to You."

Don't know if that was common knowlege back in 1941 or not.

God forbid, should anything happen to me during my trip to Hawaii, make sure AllWeather gets my 15" MacBook Pro with the retina display.

I pray you're okay, Everett. Thanks for your thoughtfulness.

AWF,

HA! You will be forever known as the "Father of the E-Griz Fake Quote". This is truly a seminal and transformational event in E-Griz history.

Even EG agrees!

This article only further validates my primary concern...

"...One challenge for Delaney and his staff has been keeping an experienced, talent-laden defensive line from blowing up almost every pass play the No. 1 offense attempts. Griz quarterback Jordan Johnson has done a lot of scrambling and on Saturday he had the wind knocked out of him.

Because the No. 1 defensive line is so strong and the No. 1 offensive line is so young, offensive success has been spotty..."

Everyone has expressed concern about the o-line. Neither Schmaing or Poole are listed as in playing the article.

This is what you said in your initial post: "To summarize, I see the Griz taking a step back in every phase of the game, which would likely mean they achieve less this season than they did last season." Every phase of the game? The article indicates that the d-line looks great. Do you think JJ will take a step backwards? How about the secondary? How about the punter? Do you predict that the place kicking will get worse? Will the coaching be worse?

At this point inn the season, I'd much rather see the defense dominating than the other way around. This was very typical when Hauck was here as well. If the offense was running roughshod over our defense, then I'd have real concerns. I'v already said this, but I think our defense is going to raise some hell this year.

no glasses of any color, and I didn't go to the scrimmage tonight. so this my untainted expectation:

Griz will be 2-2 heading into the conference season.

Griz D ends will have a feast on that bloody carpet in Cheney.

Over and out.

By every phase I was referring to offense, defense, and special teams overall. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but I don't see them being as strong as last season across the board.

I don't see JJ stepping back per se, but I could see him and the rest of the skill players being less productive as a unit given the combination of early season injuries and inexperience upfront.

I agree that the d line looks great, but odds are the talent level at LB will not be as good as they we're last year. That's not slam on the current kids it's just that they follow a ridiculously talented group of LBs from last year.

The secondary may be better, but that remains to be seen.

Perhaps an argument could be made that special teams doesn't step back, but that's just because the kicking game was very weak last season.

Yes the punting was relatively good last year, but the inability to consistently convert mid-range field goals last season hurt this team tremendously. Until they begin to reliably contribute when it counts, I'll be sticking with my original prediction.

I stand by what I said regarding Gregorak thus far being underwhelming as the coordinator. He maybe the best at developing Griz LBs and putting them in the NFL, but I still wonder if that talent made up for the defensive schemes over all.

Your initial post was off base, but your last post is fine. I don't agree with your assessment of Gregorak, but even he has said he is still learning.

At least the players can be judged by their performance in camp. As for the coaches, we'll have to wait until crunch time during a game. Its a wait and see proposition. I'll hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

I am actually very excited for this match up. Montana is going to have hands down the best d-ends in the conference and EWU is going to have the best offensive tackles in 6'6 305 pound Clay DeBord and 6'6 315 pound Jake Rodgers. Not as hands down as Montana's d-ends, but still very dominant. Your d-ends will inevitably make very nice plays, but that particular position battle will be very exciting.

I can't figure out how the 2014 Griz are better than the 2013 Griz. The 2014 linebackers are unlikely to be better than the 2013 linebackers (2 of whom seem to be doing well in the NFL). The rest of the defense may be slightly improved, but I don't think they can balance out the changeover at linebacker.

On offense, 3 or 4 of the linemen will be replaced, and I suspect the new guys will not be as skilled as the players they replace. No matter how good the backs and receivers are, it will be a long season if they don't have good blocking.

Thus looking at it objectively, I can't see how this years Griz are better than last years.

For the record, I sure hope I'm wrong. I'm 100% behind this years team and can't wait for the season to start. This is part of what makes Griz football fun.

Okay, fine, the 2013 Griz win...now can we watch the team we haven't even seen play an opponent yet? MCG, I don't think there is some empirical data to come to a correct answer. For me, I follow recruiting closely, and I think the recruits that we have coming into their prime the next couple of years are dynamic and will generally address some of last year's glaring weakness. We don't generally have linebackers who can win a sprint title in Cali (Gamboa), for example. Other than the big names you mentioned that we lost, we return a ton, and we have alot of experience this year including another year with an unfractured coaching unit. These things make more of a difference to me than the fact that we lost some great linebackers and linemen. Have you seen pur linebackers this year. They have not taken a step back from what I've seen, and the quality depth is better there. Lots more cornerback competition this year. The o-line remains the question. But I don't think we'll ghet an accurate gauge on them until they play somebody besides our D, which I am confident will be better than last years.

The 07 Griz were one and done in the playoffs, lost a bunch of NFL talent and were supposed to take a major step back.........

....they played for the next 2 National Championships.

Translation-you have no fricken idea how this year will pan out.
