I have some sad news to report this evening. Late word has come from Honolulu and our worst fears have been realized. While vacationing in Hawaii, our dear friend, EverettGriz (EG) was indeed struck on the head by a falling coconut due to the the heavy winds that have blanketed the islands with the incoming Hurricane Iselle. The blow to the head was reportedly not a mortal wound. Unfortunately, at the time the coconut struck him, EG and his beautiful wife were visiting the summit of the Kilauea volcano. EG was brought back up from the volcano base due to the heroic action of the park's rangers. His final words were reportedly, "That f***[*] hurt". He then motioned for his wife to give him his cell phone where in vein he attempted to make his final post on this board, Go Griz! Before he could type it, he succumbed to his injuries.
Funeral arrangements have been made at the Munson Funeral Home in Everett, WA. I will personally meet the grieving widow and the remains at SeaTac Airport on Sunday afternoon. I will also be assisting his widow in grief counseling in weekly sessions at the Red Hook Brewery.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the CCK Foundation (Coconuts Can Kill Foundation) and to the Kilauea Volcano Safety Program. The family is hopeful that if enough funds are raised they will be able to erect the EverettGriz Memorial Safety fence. This will ensure that future tragedies like this will be avoided. His loving widow joked that this could be the first time he has erected something in the past 12 years. A truly brave woman!
Godspeed Everett!
