Rob Ash said some things today

“I want to get on my soap box for a minute since I have the stage and talk about the word commitment,” Ash said. “The recruiting process is brutal. It’s excruciating and very challenging for the recruits and the coaches alike. The decisions are very difficult and life-changing for both parties, but in the end, when scholarships are involved, once we get to Signing Day, we have to have a scholarship for each player we’ve promised one to. The only way we can do that is we have to make a commitment to them. We will have money for them on signing day. This can’t just be a one-way street. We can’t have a system in place where recruits can commit to schools in order to save themselves a scholarship an then continue to shop themselves around to other schools looking for a better offer. As coaches and educators of the youth of America, we need to teach these young men that a commitment is a commitment. They need to stick to their commitment if they make one or they need to be honest and declare that they are still open for recruitment. On our side of the deal, we need to honor commitments as coaches when they are made by recruits to other schools so that we can move on to other players and let them be committed. Without honor, our profession and our sport will become tarnished. We are passing on the wrong lessons to the men we are about to bring under our guidance. I intend to pursue this message in all my future professional gatherings, business meetings, national meetings, conventions and so forth. I am going to ask for the support of my coaching colleagues from around the country that we are sending the wrong message and that error needs to be corrected. That commitment is a commitment.” -Rob Ash

Easy, Ron. I don't think that's the way it's supposed to work under NCAA rules.

I hope his words are meant to better the process or if he is butt hurt over losing the likes of Daum to the GRIZ? If he is sincere, then what he is saying is 100% correct. I think coaches can do better with this. As for recruits sticking to it, these recruits are 18 years old!!! I don't fault them for changing their minds. I feel it is not realistic to expect 18 year olds to not change their minds.

Word. Remember back in the day when a Bobcat coach chastised a kid on twitter for wanting to go to a better program when said program offered a full scholarship? I don't know. I might detect some butthurt in Ron's speech. Second place in Montana is nothing at which to scoff. I think Ron & Co. should be proud of their effort.

Right, he's never decommitted a player from another school, has he? What a two faced m*****f****r.

I'm curious if Ash gave this particular speech to Gunnar Brekke or any other recruit that flipped their decision and went to msu instead. Hypocrite. FTC.

What a baby of a head coach. Kids decommit from every school. Grow up and work harder and plan for all options. Just another excuse from a average head coach

You bite your tongue. Coach Ron Ash is a decent man from a strong family. Not to mention, he has one amazing head of hair. That, right there, is enough to steal a 3-4 recruits a year from Tech, Rocky, and Carroll.

You are missing the point. He doesn't mind if a kid changes his mind, he just wants a heads up, asks that a kid says he is opening his recruiting back up. I like what he said and I agree.

Clearly, you don't understand the strategy in Bozeman. He's right in the sweet spot. Maybe Ursa can lend you one of his signed copies of what we like to call The Good Book.

And Christian............saucy

Ash is never allowed to accept another kid onto his football team that previously committed elsewhere. You have to teach these kids a lesson on commitment coach!

The kids don't owe him anything. You know how hard it is to be in high school. Have 20 colleges calling you and sending you info and parents friends and family telling you what you should do!.it's almost impossible to tell each coach what you feel and where you stand. Most players change their mind 5-10 times. And when a coach calls and says hey we love you and want you here but I need to an answer so I cam plan...the player chooses. Just so happens that the player he refers to was told I know your aMSU commit and I need to know your interest level in us. The kid says...well I'd like to commit to you now actually. That's a kid growing up and making a choice. Maybe its your fault as a coach because obviously you were not very in touch with said player

Coach Ash knows perfectly well that if he could turn some kid (within the NCAA rules) that he really needed and thought he had a shot at, he would not hesitate. That's how it works.

I think it's more the programs that need to do better with commitment. Some kid signs and red shirts, the next year he is out because a drop down shows up or whatever. Partials, preferred walk ons, etc, all about enticing the kids you can't really afford. It often just comes down to timing, like with our QBs this year. Somebody will probably have to leave, but they will find a niche at another school.

I have been doinking this gal from Billings for some time now. Things were working out good I thought we each were independent and had our own lives. I thought we had an agreement from the get go she seemed to be fine with.

This winter she changed her tune said she wanted more of a "commitment." I told her I have been faithfully screwing around with her one weekend every other month for over two years now. If that aint commitment I don't know what is. She was mad for a while but got over it.

Not sure how to construe Ashes rant. If it is aimed at any of the kids I bet it only makes the recruits that picked Stitt over Ash even more confident of their decision now.

Some people are completing missing the boat and can't hear what he is saying because the sound of their Griz chest-thumping is too loud. I tend to agree with Ash that there needs to be a change in the way it is currently done.
