Rethinking my fandom

Sure you lost 3 in a row to us. You lost 4 in a row when Choate was the coach. Did you make this post then?
I think there’s a bit of a difference when the coach takes over and the last two of the four are his first two years when compared to 3 in a row in his 6th and 7th seasons. Especially when transfer rules have completely changed since 2018 to today.

It’s wise to be patient. And we were those first two years of his tenure. But now that we have been, it’s time to move on.

I see a lot of comments on here about moving on because "it's just a game." I share that feeling--it's how I coped with Saturday's loss, and the one last November. But...it didn't used to feel that way. Griz football used to feel like something a bit more. Until something or someone shakes things up, it's going to have to remain as "just a game".

As I consider how upset I was at the results of today's game, I'm rethinking how passionate I want to be about this team going forward. I'll always be a Griz fan and I'll always love this team but I think I have to find a way to be a more casual fan. I can still come to a game or two in the fall (and scream my head off) and watch all the games on TV, but I have to be able to separate myself somehow so that I'm not so horribly disappointed when we lose to the cats every year. (Which seems inevitable as long as Bobby remains the coach which also seems inevitable.) Maybe someone around here can give me some solid advice on how to do this.
Never work Mom.

Leave and come back when we have new coaches and athletic director. How's that? Pretty solid advice.

I'm honestly seeing a lot of similarities of this Griz program to, say Texas or Penn State, and I think that's why many are feeling so burned at this point. We have the facilities, a rabid fanbase, good players, yet we can't quite get over the hump to be elite. We beat the teams we are supposed to beat, and most of the time blow them out. But when we face top competition, it's kinda a jekyl and hyde situation... some years we excel (i.e. 2008, 2009, 2023) just to collapse in the title game. Other years, we just can't break through. It's a bit inconsistent. And I think that's where people are getting bored of blowing out majority of teams and then struggling to be consistent with bigger games.

I heard somewhere that someone said if we had played any other team this year in the semis other than the Cats and lost, the majority of us would likely say we had a really good year. But the sting is that we all expect that we should compete and beat the Cats, the NDSU/SDSUs, etc, and that's where we fall short. There's also a sting that this year was the best chance to actually win a championship with NDSU/SDSU out, which hurts more after losing to the Cats too.

Clearly, we had a good year. But we fell short of what our goal is and we always seem to fall short. As the ESPN announcers said back in 2023 in the game against NDSU, "Montana has been so good for so long, but they often come up short in big games like this. Will this be the one where they finally turn the corner?"

Still waiting for that corner.

#3 in the country....your program is totally in decline. Only 2 loses on the season and both to the eventual champions. 😉

Sure you lost 3 in a row to us. You lost 4 in a row when Choate was the coach. Did you make this post then?

What you do with you time, money, and energy is your business and if thats the way you feel, then more power to you.
I did make the same post. I have been making the same arguments for ten years.

As with everything in life we are either dying, surviving, or moving forward, there is nothing else.

Right now UM is surviving.

I think there are four levels to life... dying, surviving, idling, and moving forward.

Montana was surviving between 2012-2017.
Montana was moving forward from 2018-2025.
Somewhere in the last 4 years, we've been idling. Nothing is necessarily "wrong", but nothing is improving either.

If you end up getting a therapy pet, get one that can left alone on gameday because you will be back, Mom.

Idling is either dying or barely surviving really, but that’s too philosophical.

I’d argue at least that Montana football was surviving from 2012-2015. It was dying from 2016-2018. It was moving forward from 2019-2023. It is surviving 2024-present.

Huh? The field house opened in 1953.
I never actually fact checked it. That's what I was told as a kid, so I asked my mother and it wasn't the actual construction of the Fieldhouse, it was a renovation in the UC in 1968, and the remodel of the Fieldhouse in 1970. Shoot me. I was 2 two.

This x100!

This is what made me so nervous leading into this game. A loss in the semis sucks but ultimately a decent season but sending you guys to the natty would've been awful. It wasnt a fear of losing the game. It was a fear of sending you to Nashville.

You reached the Semifinals of the FCS playoffs. There are 100+ fan bases that would have killed for that.

Either understand that, or don’t get angry when outsiders call your fanbase “spoiled cunts”
It takes a certain level of low life to come to another teams chat site and respond to a well known and respected female poster like Da Boyz Mom with the phrase "spoiled cunts." You'd have to climb a very tall ladder to get up to the level of 'bottom of the barrel.'
I've never put anyone of 'ignore' until now. Congratulations! You have accomplished something with your worthless life. I hope the Mods will take it to the ultimate result.

I can't give any good advice on detaching more as a fan haha - DBM - you make the call thats right for you. If it's a short step away, or a long one, or none at all. Grizzly sports creates a family (that can be somewhat dysfunctional at times) but the best thing of this family is that when the time feels right to reengage, we'll welcome you back with open arms.

Go Griz!

My exact thought when I read that post..

At the time of completion, the Field House was
one of the bigger all purpose facilities out West. Sawdust floor used to be able to hold rodeos just like State does now….prior to upgrading to a larger capacity remodel with a state of the art “Tartan” …rubberized type playing surface for Basketball..
( not good on compromised knee joints) also had an indoor track. Held about 8500 or so..
I say Montana needs to get back to basics..
Bring back the fricking sawdust floor, bring back Montana players on that sawdust floor who continue just like old times to teach kids like Chris Nord and John Elway and also just us normal kids how to Punt, Pass , and kick better…and become Montana fans forever..

…Gut that building bring back the rodeos( I know the business crowd of hosting and hospitality wouldn’t mind…)recruit road grading rush blockers, and teach them how to pass block, and not the other fricking way around. Be flexible with your defense and if you don’t have the athletes or depth to run a 3-3-5, then develop a coaching staff that is flexible enough to run something else. Play man on D, enough of this zone D that allows huge gaps in coverage..

I remember that all that seemed to matter during the streak with the typical Bobcat fan was to beat the Griz. Seems the polar opposite now..
Vigen brought in the winning formula, the NDSU way….A winning formula that has been proven through the years. All you have to do to realize this is look at BIZON success against the G5’s and the P4’s…or whatever they call them.
Let’s rodeo ! #Make Montana Great Again!
13-2 …Most fan bases would be happy with this, but not so in Missoula.

MMGA…. It DOESN’T matter if you’re red or blue or just tan…just Be a FAN! All that shit just melts away anyways when we’re all so collectively fans first when we’re all watching the Griz kick bobcat ass…

G0 GRIZ!!

Cmon Griz fans get yourself off the mat and back in the game. I have no clue whether your coach is capable or not, but I’d say this…he was capable of getting you in the Final Four. I have zero clue about your politics or history, all I know is I’ve been aware of Montana football since the 60’s. I played against them in the 70’s. I’ve watched you win title after title ( big sky ) year after year.

Think about the product you / we have. FCS football. Over 100 teams playing to be the champion. 1 team wins it. But you get your chance. Keep in mind there are boosters at other Big Sky schools that would rape and pillage Missoula to have your program. USD painfully had to fight and claw their way to being relevant then you guys kick the crap out of us and have some of our boosters questioning our staff or administration. I’m also an Iowa State fan. Think about a lifetime of misery I’ve had to endure. Then we become good but not anywhere close enough to make the playoffs. And this year the Cyclones go 8-4 and refuse to go to a bowl game. And those boosters are coughing up a lot more coin than Montana or South Dakota. They have NO HOPE.

You can reload, or refine your squad for next year and take another shot at it. So can we. In fact this years Coyote team lost over 10 players with a NIL payroll over $13M. But somehow we reloaded and made the quarter finals. In other words we had a shot. And we took our shot and did pretty well until we ran out of gunpowder in Missoula.

Unless you’re Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Georgia and a few others, those teams not named them have no f’ing chance of playing for a title. None. The Griz do. The Cats do. The Yotes, Jacks, and Bison do. Even the Redbirds do. That’s what’s great about FCS football and being a Griz fan. You’re not gonna be in the finals every year. You’re not. Neither are we, BUT THE HOPE of it is there every damn year. Hope springs eternal.

As I stated prior, we have the privledge and benefit of waking up fall Saturday mornings and going to a game, sharing awesome food and drinks with like minded people such as yourself. Sure you want to win but so does the entire damn world. Enjoy the day, go to church Sunday and just thank the man up above you have that opportunity. Trust me, your kids don’t want to lose. Your coaches don’t want to lose. They bust their a$$ to compete and entertain you.

In closing, give a few more Schenkels to Griz football, and if you’re to pissed to do that,I can direct you to the Yote Fund in Vermillion, SD. But don’t take it so seriously that it’s not fun.

Get off the mst and shake off the dust. You’ve got a little work to do and we have a lot to do. But hard work and having an optimistic future is my strength. My goal is to make our program better than yours, but enjoy the journey along the way whether we get there or not.
