Rethinking my fandom

I think there are four levels to life... dying, surviving, idling, and moving forward.

Montana was surviving between 2012-2017.
Montana was moving forward from 2018-2025.
Somewhere in the last 4 years, we've been idling. Nothing is necessarily "wrong", but nothing is improving either.
A championship game appearance and semifinal appearance isn’t exactly idling compared to pre-Covid era. The only thing that’s changed our perspective is the neighbors success. If we lost on the semis to any other team including a Dakota state at their place we would say it was a good year, we need to adjust. Now since it was the neighbors twice with once being at home it’s burn the place to the ground.

Guess what. The neighbors had to re evaluate after getting stomped on Brookings in 2022. Further evaluation in 2023 after not being able to close out a game at home against NDSU. They have addressed that and moved on and are seeing dividends from that.

We can do the same moving forward. Invest and develop the lines, first and foremost. Guess what. This has been happening and recruiting class of 2024-2025 proves that with focusing on 5 good OL recruits. Amick should be the standard and if any of the other 4 from that recruiting class develop similar we will have a solid o line for multiple years and by the time Jones develops, he and Fonoti could have a stellar 1-2 punch for KAY’s final year.

Now can we switch up our defensive scheme or prioritize personnel to shore it up? Remains to be seen. We have talent to build on. Seriously, we have a once in a generation QB and RB at the same time next year, and possible the same at WR.

I’m not a sugar coater and there is ample criticisms to be made. But to act like this program isn’t in a better spot that 90-95% of the FCS is ridiculous. Now how do we make it 99%

How can we make the program in a better spot than 100% of the rest of the FCS? That was what Hauck was handed when he took over for Joe Glenn. It was mostly maintained during the first Hauck era and then deteriorated when Pflugrad came in and hasn’t gotten back to that standard of being better than everyone else in the FCS.

Cmon Griz fans get yourself off the mat and back in the game. I have no clue whether your coach is capable or not, but I’d say this…he was capable of getting you in the Final Four. I have zero clue about your politics or history, all I know is I’ve been aware of Montana football since the 60’s. I played against them in the 70’s. I’ve watched you win title after title ( big sky ) year after year.

Think about the product you / we have. FCS football. Over 100 teams playing to be the champion. 1 team wins it. But you get your chance. Keep in mind there are boosters at other Big Sky schools that would rape and pillage Missoula to have your program. USD painfully had to fight and claw their way to being relevant then you guys kick the crap out of us and have some of our boosters questioning our staff or administration. I’m also an Iowa State fan. Think about a lifetime of misery I’ve had to endure. Then we become good but not anywhere close enough to make the playoffs. And this year the Cyclones go 8-4 and refuse to go to a bowl game. And those boosters are coughing up a lot more coin than Montana or South Dakota. They have NO HOPE.

You can reload, or refine your squad for next year and take another shot at it. So can we. In fact this years Coyote team lost over 10 players with a NIL payroll over $13M. But somehow we reloaded and made the quarter finals. In other words we had a shot. And we took our shot and did pretty well until we ran out of gunpowder in Missoula.

Unless you’re Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Georgia and a few others, those teams not named them have no f’ing chance of playing for a title. None. The Griz do. The Cats do. The Yotes, Jacks, and Bison do. Even the Redbirds do. That’s what’s great about FCS football and being a Griz fan. You’re not gonna be in the finals every year. You’re not. Neither are we, BUT THE HOPE of it is there every damn year. Hope springs eternal.

As I stated prior, we have the privledge and benefit of waking up fall Saturday mornings and going to a game, sharing awesome food and drinks with like minded people such as yourself. Sure you want to win but so does the entire damn world. Enjoy the day, go to church Sunday and just thank the man up above you have that opportunity. Trust me, your kids don’t want to lose. Your coaches don’t want to lose. They bust their a$$ to compete and entertain you.

In closing, give a few more Schenkels to Griz football, and if you’re to pissed to do that,I can direct you to the Yote Fund in Vermillion, SD. But don’t take it so seriously that it’s not fun.

Get off the mst and shake off the dust. You’ve got a little work to do and we have a lot to do. But hard work and having an optimistic future is my strength. My goal is to make our program better than yours, but enjoy the journey along the way whether we get there or not.

Good post. My family is from the area over there near Vermillion, and I like seeing you guys be competitive. You had a lot of setbacks.

Have some questions on that $13 million figure. Is that a legit number from inside your program, or speculative? Is that what you guys were paying for what they received at FBS programs total? Hard for me to believe any FCS team is putting up anywhere even half of the cap of ~$20 million.

As fans we need to keep this stuff in perspective. College football is a very fickle game. The cats are probably close to the peak of where their program has ever been. They had some glory years will Sonny Holland, but this is probably equal to that. Things change in football from week to week, let alone from year to year. To think that things are not going to cycle around is just naive.
I hate the attitude that the cats or griz should just automatically win against Weber State, NAU, Idaho State or even Portland State every year. Those teams also have exceptional Div I athletes that work their asses off all year to be competitive. The griz are 13-2 in Div I college football and only lost to one team who happens to currently be a bad matchup for them. That is one hell of a season and anyone who ever put on a jock knows that is not an easy accomplishment and should be appreciated.

The $13M is the total NIL that was paid out to all of our portal guys. Some had 1 year deals and others 2 year deals. It’s not speculative.

We don’t pay hardly anything. We don’t have the money

Pflu took team to semis his last year.

Exactly. Merry Christmas

I don’t believe the $13 million figure.
I honestly don’t care if you do or not. But I’ll help you. Google M’Quise Grace. He was the MVFC defensive player of the year. He has 2 years left for sure, and possibly a third. He was offered by Alabama, Georgia, and a host of other SEC schools. He settled on Kentucky because he’s from inner city Cincinnati and close enough for his family to get there.

Now go find out what the top defensive edge rushers are getting paid. Subtract that from the $13M and now the math isn’t hard to do. We had (4) offensive lineman portal out. The least paid was $450k,and the highest over $1M. Either one or two of those guys have 2 years left.

This year we’ve got (3) in the portal thus far. Our running back LJ Phillips, our receiver Fenner, and our punter. The punter is leaving only because it’s his 5th year and wants to try something different. There’s interest from Penn State, but have no clue what they get. I’ll bet Fenner and Phillips will exceed $1M each.

You do realize that SEC and Big 10 schools in the upper third have payrolls exceeding $20M. In addition there are deals outside of revenue sharing where boosters and business participate.

I don’t know but would bet our NIL at USD all sports isn’t 500k. That might change soon but I’d bet I’m close.

You used the figure. You prove it. 10 players. $13 million. Lowest you say is $450,000. The numbers don’t add up. The numbers aren’t public.

$700,000 for top college edge rushers. Again, numbers don’t add up.

Typical Earnings by Tier
  • Top Transfers/Elite Recruits: Expect $700,000 to $1 Million+.
  • Solid Rotational Players: $200,000 to $400,000.”

No, it was a good and accurate post. Your post was stupid and wrong: "then deteriorated when Pflugrad came in." The program didn't deteriorate with Pflu. It got significantly better.
You’re just going to ignore the NCAA infractions during that season which put the program at a scholarship deficit against everyone in the Big Sky and MVFC for Delaney and Stitt to deal with? I think you are trolling. It is not possible for you to really be this clueless to make statements like the program got significantly better with Pflu.

The scholarship loss was not a big deal, is what I was told. The problem was the hiring of Stitt.

Hauck was handed a team that lost 3 of its last 4 games in '02 and inherited a QB room headed by Jeff Disney.
