recruiting

...the real question is how much money are they willing to invest in recruiting these or any other athlete. For Big Sky Conference teams (from here on out BSC) it always come down to resources and money. BSC team have very limited resources when compared to most of the D-1 team, and they have to be doled out very judiciously, and they can not spend a lot of money chasing kids who they really have no or very little chance of getting.

You nailed it, Mslacat.

Recruiting is, at best, an inexact science. With the overwhelming amount of information that is readily available to all schools, and all the speculating and gossip-mongering that happens on message boards, it's really hard for BSC schools to get much of an edge. Every once in awhile, kids fall through the cracks and get picked up by BSC teams, but we shouldn't expect that UM is gonna go out and make a huge effort to recruit "4-star" athletes, whatever the hell those four stars mean.

the recipe for success at montana is the same as it was back in our heyday of basketball, the same it's been for robin selvig: start with the best ingredients you can find (good kids), let them simmer on the back burner for a year or two (redshirt 'em), sprinkle in a few spices (the kids like richardson, krysko, pope and maybe cherry next year who are ready to play immediately), stir actively (especially on defense) and watch them cook.

i know, i know, the men have fewer scholarships to offer, so they can't redshirt as many as they used to, or as selvig still can. but wouldn't it have been better to redshirt qvale? if he were a freshman this year, i'd really be pumped about the future of our program. it's so hard to find good post players, and when we do find one with a huge upside, we basically waste him for one full year. i'll never understand it.

and by the way, this is basically the same recipe hauck has followed in football. he had to use a lot of new kids last year, several of whom came through for him. but more redshirted, and will be much more productive by their junior and senior years.

OK, After watching Texas play tonight and seeing their "manu-like" PG play somewhat well, I am wondering about overseas recruiting. How do schools approach this? Clearly Geography and money play a big role, but how does one land a good foreign recruit? Are they pretty much on a referal basis, a la our Aussie kid who transferred? I would think, given the mass series of tubes that is the internet, that coaches/recruiters could track foreign players better these days. Perhaps these foreign kids go straight to amateur/pro leagues in Europe? You would think there would be a plethora of talent that wouldn't mind a good education in a foreign country.
