recruiting

will cherry is not a point guard. not yet anyway. he supposedly was recruited for that position and is working on those skills but i saw little evidence of that the time i saw him play. i didn't see him play the point once, and i was watching for it.

i agree with montana jeff--and i'd recruit one point guard every year. i think it's the most important position on the team. whether stockton can handle the point at this level is unknown right now. he does many things well, but could turn out to be another sam riddle. the difference between riddle and shane christiansen in the first-round game against oregon in 2002 was stunning. now, christiansen is playing for the trotters, and sam is playing the piano.

so: recruit, recruit point guards, redshirt 80% of the all freshmen (doesn't apply to the big schools but remains our edge) and play defense, defense, defense. that's the formula for success at montana, and tinks is on the right track.

This would be an acceptable plan if we had 15 scholarships to offer.

"recruit a point guard who can handle the ball, penetrate and dish, and is quick."

This describes CET to a T.

I think Stockton will be a very good point guard for UM. Smart, good passer, good defender, handles the ball well, tough, makes big/smart plays (like weakside on defense under the bucket), and can score. We haven't seen all of this yet, but we will when he is playing more.

This is idiotic. Without Lebron James, the Cavs would be one of the worst teams in the NBA! Tinks did recruit AJ and deserves some credit. The Griz are currently playing stifling defense, probably as good defense as I have seen from a Griz team in a long, long time. Similarly, they are playing as hard as any Griz team I have seen in recent memory. Like it or not, you are going to have to give the Griz coaching staff (Tinks included) some credit for this success. Your bias and lack of objectivity is pretty apparent!

No, Mo Williams is also an all-star. The Cavs wouldn't be as good, but they would not be one of the worst teams in league.

AJ is WAY more important to this team than Lebron is to the Cavs.

Mo Williams was the guy in milwaukee for a couple years and they were one of the worst teams in the league. They would be no where near contending without LeBron. Anyways AJ deserves a lot of credit for our season so far, but so does tinks. First tinks got him here, i am tired of tinkle bashers giving Robin Selvig all the credit for that. Second, tinks got him to play defense and take better shots and play with more control. AJ didnt bring bring in a guy with a wealth of knowledge about zone defenses, or magically teach the whole team to play hard for 40 minutes. And how many times have we heard how well we have been prepared to play by announcers during this run. That being said he has definately helped, just give credit where credit is due and i think they both deserve a lot.

AJ wasn't here last year and we got blown out by PSU in front of the home crowd on senior night BY FORTY POINTS. Did Tinks just learn about the zone this year?

Oh yeah, we were blaming Cam for being a virus last year. It was his fault, not Tinkle's.

Can Tinkle recruit? He got AJ, but besides him, I have yet to see a single player he has brought in be a difference maker. Can he develop talent? Cam - fail, Andrew S. - fail, BQ - fail, Mcgillis - fail, Selvig - fail, CET - can he pass his classes or breathylizers - fail.

Let's see how AJ progresses next year, huh?

PS - Several former L. Griz players have said that Tinks told O'Day that his daughter would pick UM if she knew her dad would have a job as long as she would be here.

O'Day - Fail

UM Griz fans that think Tinkle would be anything without AJ - Fail.

DJ, you are entitled your opinion, we are entitled to agree or disagree with you. As for the zone ?, by bringing in the new assistant, he brought the zone with him. So yes, in a sense the GRIZ just did learn the zone this year.

I refuse to label any GRIZ as a failure, God Sakes, they are young men. I am thankful for their efforts. Who cares if they live up to any fan(s) opinion(s).

As for the comment about Jos, this is not the place to bring that up. Being you did though, I have worked with Tinkle every summer but this last one over the last several. Tinkle's attitude has always been to let JOS do her thing and decide what would be best for her future. Personally, they wanted her to be a Lady GRIZ. However, I know for a fact Tinkle did not one time use Jos as bait.

Could have there possibly been some mentions of her by various faculty and or athletes? Very possible. However, as someone that knows Tinkle and O'Day, that was never part of the decision making process as for Tinkle's job. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Tinkle has assembled a talented team, and the team has started to play well fairly consistently. Beating Weber and Idaho St. would show that they are in position to make a strong run for the ncaa birth. It will be fun to watch. Go Griz.

AJ was here earlier this year when when we lost by TWENTY SEVEN to psu. What has changed since then? We play hard all the time and play smart TEAM basketball. When you play defense and play together a lot can happen. Hard to say someone is carrying a team when said team has 24 fgs on 20 assists and holds the conferences leading fg% team to 33% for the game. Our TEAM defense the best in the conference and unselfish play are carrying us. Tinks convinced kennedy to offer jordan so there is another difference maker. Awfully early to call selvig a failure being only a freshman and oozing potential and i will take a failure like Andrew Strait any day of the week!

You have got to be kidding me about CET. You struck out on all three qualities. He is not a good ball handler. He spends 90% of the time dribbling around the perimeter 35 feet from the hole. He is not quick either, explaining his inability to beat his defender to penetrate and dish. Has he ever had more than 6-7 assist in a game for the Griz? If he is the best Tinkle can recruit at the point, we are in trouble.

I stand by my statements on CET.

He is very quick and the quickest guy on the team. He starts the offense low, not at 35 feet. He drives and dishes. He also gets the ball to the right people on the inside and outside. This is why AJ likes playing with him and having him on the court. He's also capable of scoring, including 9 against the Cats off the bench. He has a good assist to turnover ratio. He has 26 turnovers for the year, in 332 minutes.

Note that UM has won all 7 games since CET returned to the team. While he didn't play in the first game, AJ gave CET credit for providing advice and support during that first game. He averaged 4.33 assists per game until his suspension. Most give him considerable credit for being part of the reason for the team's resurgence in the past 7 games.

Since we are talking about recruiting point guards, I have been hearing lately, that the Griz are very much in the market for a point guard this spring, and have offered Marcus Tibbs a 6-1 5th year senior from Decatur high school in Washington. Tibbs committed to Eastern Washington last season, but needed to go back to high school this year. He was granted a fifth year of eligibility by the state of Washington and he has been tearing up Washington this year.

I have also heard that they are looking at some guards in Utah and California, where the scholarship is coming from I do not know.

That is a good ?. We lose CET, Hasquet, Sharp. We already have Woods, Cherry, and Hutchison taking those scholarships.

We know AJ, McGillis, Vassy Banny (I think), and Stauds will be SR's, so need for them to xfr.

That leaves Stockton, Ward, Digs, Selvig, Qvale, Hurley (not on scholarship). Selvig has used a redshirt and is Montana born and bred. Qvale's playing time is there, not likely he would leave. So that leaves Stockton, Ward, and Digs as most like candidates to leave. Ward and Digs could not use a redsirt year, due to redshirting this year. Common sense narrows down to Stockton, but I have not heard anything of him being unhappy here. Could Qvale want to transfer to Nebraska to be with his younger brother?

Could any of the incoming freshman have an eligibility issue? Woods is already sitting out this year last I heard due to some playing time California HS rule. Could that effect his college future too. I sure hope not? I am stoked for all 3 of these guys to be GRIZ!

AJ is a great player, and Tinkle certainly deserves much of the credit for recruiting him, BUT Selvig also deserves credit, as he ponied up a scholarship for AJ’s wife. There were a number of schools who were all over AJ this year, but he made it abundantly clear that he wasn’t going anywhere unless his wife was offered a scholarship as well.

It appears that things have worked out well for the men’s team as well as for the Johnson family. I haven’t followed the women’s team much, but it appears the jury is still out on Shaunte.

Montana jeff - How many games have you seen this year with CET playing? Was the NAU game in Arizona the only one you've seen so far?

CET led the league (if I remember right) in assist/turnover ratio last season, was one of the top (if not the top) in assists per game in conference at 4.8 assists per game, was leading the league in assists/turnover by far this season and was one of the top in assists per game (if not leading the league) before the suspension. He's also one of, if not our best, defender at the guard position. With both him and AJ on the floor at the same time, the Griz are better offensively, and better by far defensively.

CET is a true point guard. He is very quick, a great defender, and yes, he can drive and dish too. He's had many games with more than 6 assists. He's had a couple with 10 or more. This team is a much better team with CET, and as PlayerRep pointed out, the Griz have won 7 since he came back.

You need to add Micheal Taylor to your list

Damn, I knew I was leaving someone out. Had I not been at work, I would have taken more time to figure it out. The sadder thing is, I like Michael Taylor, and no reason to not mention him. What a brain cramp by me. As for Taylor, I am sure he is staying too.

Does anyone have any insight on who might be leaving? I have no idea, nobody is obvious. The last few years there were obvious possible defectors. I think most us seen it coming with Rundles, Gus Chase, Vanderjagt, Watson (even though he never really got started), Spurgettis (I wish he would have stayed, I loved his attitude.), Graves, Van Vliet (sp?), and Swift.

I will be surprised if anyone verify who maybe leaving at this stage. I just do not see logical reasoning for anyone leaving.

I certainly wasn't a believer earlier in this season about Shaunte, but she is improving. She did commit a few to many turnovers first 10 games or so, but lately she has been commiting fewer per game.
Her best game was her last game. Good to have an athletic point guard. But, she is not going to be a high scoring point guard like Mandy Morales.

Do we even need to ask that question?

Is Jordan even as good as he was his freshman year? Does Mcgillis look like a Pac-10 player? Does Selvig look like the highest rated recruit Montana has ever seen?

Without AJ, this would be the second or third worst team in the league.

THIS IS FACT!
