All due, Mellott is a great runner, leader, and fits like a glove in their offensive system. Park him in a more conventional offense and see what you've got then. Great runner, great leader and below average passer, which is what today's game is about for 99% of the football playing world. He might be able to make himself into one, but I wouldn't count on that.
The sad thing you note about the Idaho kid is that he seemed to catch fire when the coach brought in his transfer replacement from his old school, SDSU. He played against Montana the year before and couldn't get out of his own way. But that was Petrino, Eck seems to be able to actually develop guys with talent. And they seemed to have a real competition for the spot - isn't that amazing?
What difference does it make how he’d perform in a different system? I don’t get that argument at all. As you said, he fits like a glove in THEIR system. That’s really all that matters, unless Vigen moves on before Mellott’s time is up and they change systems. Kid’s never playing in the NFL, so not sure why this is even an argument.
