President Engstrom on KUFM

5700....I would suspect that MSU actually interviewed several people before they hired Cruzado and UM used the back room system and took the easy way out when they promoted Engstrom. Now UM will pay for the improper procedures big time resulting from several law suits and a soiled reputation.

Then the University Theatre get's Dennisons name on it - Funny how things work & don't work. Would of been a shame putting Don Read's name on a little ole street by the stadium!

KUFM... Weak. Most upsetting part of this situation is that when it's all said and done, we will still have this guy as President of UM.

Sad that we swung and missed while msu hit a homer with their new president. Cruzado has a vision for msu, particularly athletics, and she sells that vision very well. You can tell she is genuinely ecstatic when talking about msu's future.

She made Royce look like a little dork during the halftime interview of the cat/Griz game. Royce just flat out doesn't possess that energy or enthusiasm. Bummer.

Agreed... :thumb:

Interesting interview. 29 minutes. More detail and some information, but no big new information. Someone following the sexual assault matters closely would already know most of this. Thanks, Goatcreek for calling it to our attention. Here is some summary information.

The incident getting the most time was the Saudi incident. The interviewer returned to it a second time.

Interviewer asked about decision to start an independent investigation and mentioned that Engstrom must have known that an independent investigation would shine more light on the situation. He said rumors about the incident and who was involved were circulating, and they immediately convened a small group to decide what to do. She asked if the press reports were a factor, but he didn't really answer the question.

Interviewer asked if he was shocked by the number (9) of sexual assaults. He said he was "quite surprised". He pointed out that some resulted because of the investigation and the press on the investigation.

Interviewer asked about Pflu's failure to report the Dec. 2010 incident. He said that UM's rules on reporting were very ambiguous and essentially said there was no obligation to report. She asked about Pflu's disciplining of the players at the time, and he said the coach disciplined them at the appropriate level (or something like that).

Interviewer asked about Pflu's comments in support of JJ. Engstrom, after some hesitation and hemming, said they were "ill-advised" and "should have been thought out more clearly".

Regarding the firings, he said that it was his responsibility to to surround himself with people most effective in moving forward the way he wanted to move forward, consistent with his leadership style and objective. Repeated that.

He was "quite surprised" by the DOJ investigation. He is confident that the DOJ will conclude UM has the proper procedures in place and that UM did properly deal with the issues.

Didn't say much on the ncaa investigation. Just that they said it would be 6 months and we're getting close to that.

Suspects that the investigations will take months, in response to question whether they will take months.

Today was DOJ's first deadline for responding to questions and providing documents, and this was done today.

Interviewer asked about emails showing UM wanted to "damp down" on what was happening. He said the emails showed internal dialogue. What's important is that UM took and continues to take appropriate actions. There was no attempt to hide something or make issues less serious.

Interviewer mentioned UM's not returning some calls. He admitted that some calls and emails were probably not returned, apologized for that, and said they have to do better.

Interviewer asked if UM was going to hire someone to do or help with communications. Interviewer knew this was occurring. He said he had talked some people/groups, but no contract put in place yet.

There was a brief mention of the Dear Colleague letter and the lower standard of evidence, i.e. preponderance.

Interviewer said she had talked recently to a sociologist who said that rape comes from a culture that looks the other way. Does or did UM have such a culture. He said no, not one unique to UM, but similar to most other college campuses.

There were a handful of other discussions about sexual assault and aspects of it.

Thanks for the summary. :thumb:

+1 good job msu  :thumb:

Best of luck as UM and their fans move on from all of this.

My impression of this interview is that it sounds a lot like when Field fired Kramer over crisis in leadership.

Sounds like UM did not have very clear policies on how to handle these sexual assault cases leaving everybody in the dark including the admin, athletic department, and the football coach.

Hindsight says that they didn't handle it properly the way they should have, but if the policies aren't in place from the President down, it is hard to fault the AD and Coach if they screwed it up by not doing all they could do.

He took the easy way out by firing those two men without letting them be part of the solution going forward. At least that is my impression from this interview that he gave.

When it is all said and done UM and frankly MSU (probably taking notes on this) will be stronger from this.

I certainly hope so. But the lack of leadership right now does not, in my opinion, bode well for the immediate future.

I agree with this point of view on Engstrom.

I'm amazed at how completely incompetent Engstrom is. He sounds idiotic. What a terrible representative of this great university.

all the "umms" and "uhs" have something to do with it?

Sounds like a guy in over his head and he knows it, just doing his best to save himself.

Engstrom, more than likely is in agony, not knowing what to do as he is in over his head. The Board of Regents don't have the courage to fire him, so the best decision for him would be to resign.

Can anybody on here tell me why they hate engsrtom so much? Does everybody hate him because he fired the coach and the AD for breaking the rules, and you guys think that's wrong? Seriously what would any of you guys done? Seems to me engsrtom is the goat for most on here, and it just affirms that most of you have higher priorities when it comes to doing things right. Why don't you guys address the real issues, instead of complaining about a guy who fired people for not addressing the for mentioned issues.

As Geddes articulated, some posters on the internet grow balls they don't have due to the anonymity. MooU is a case in point. He's also a troll.

geddes articulated something? i hope it didn't have a giant bow on it.

MooU...while all you Bobcat fans continue to post that rules have been broken by the UM football program, and that Griz fans should focus on that, the present fact IS, no one in official capacity has EVER shown ANYONE any proof that rules were broken and that is where the resentment towards Engstrom is coming from, not just from fans of Griz football but from many, many circles of people in Montana. I KNOW how BADLY many Bobcat fans like yourself want this to be a be-all-end-all football thing, but it is so much deeper than that and as bad as you want it to be blamed on the Griz football program, you and your cronies know its deeper too.

The entire university has FAILED its own people, its faculty, its students, its supporters.

Tell me, how can you expect all Griz fans to say Pflu and O'Day did or didn't deserve to be fired when no one has EVER been given a valid reason for the firings. Have you EVER seen a head coach of a powerful sports program at the NCAA DI level be fired with a one-paragraph press release before? IF so, please site examples. Have you EVER seen an NCAA Division I university wait almost five months to announce that its football program is being investigated by the NCAA? If so, please site examples. SEE, those actions by the highest ups in the university are EVERY bit as big a part of the reason why the school is in this huge mess right now. Refusing to be honest and transparent with the ENTIRE state of Montana is a HUGE part of the problem. I'm sorry, but it goes wayyyyyyyy beyond the ONE ex-Griz player who has been charged with rape. And make NO MISTAKE, EXACTLY ONE GRIZ FOOTBALL PLAYER in either the Hauck or Pflu era has been charged with a sex crime to this point. IF I'M WRONG, please cite another example.

The bottom line, when it comes to Engstrom, I am thinking many fans are frustrated with him because he is the visable person in this right now and because even when he says something, like the recent radio interview, he doesn't say what Griz fans want to hear: WHY all this has happened. WHO is most responsible for it all happening and WHAT is going to be done about all of it. In my opinion, those three questions need to be answered before I can make up my mind on what kind of leader and president Engstrom is, and IF the firings were right or wrong. Maybe the culmination of the DOE, DOJ and NCAA investigations will bring those answers, maybe not. I hope so.

PR, don't ask UMoo questions that require an intelligent response. I'm sure he needs help just to log on to eGriz.
