Have to give NAU credit for making great halftime adjustments to plug those holes that we were getting in the first half, and also get a ton of pressure on TM. They were able to do either of those things in the first half, but completely dominated our OLine in the 2nd half.
I don't think NAU was putting seven guys in the box much if at all when S-H came into the game, Stubbins. One of the more significant adjustments of the second half for NAU was the angles of attack used by its four man front, particularly their right DT and DE who got on the outside shoulder of the our left OG and LT and attacked at almost a 45 degree angle. Those two guys were able to tie up not only our left OG and LT, but also our center who kept sliding over to help the guard. That pretty much allowed the NAU to outman our two best lineman on the right side and attack the edge effectively. Consequently, NAU's pressure was much better in the second half and they were able to free up a linebacker to help defend the mid range passing game that was working for us in the first half.
I think UM would have fared better if NAU would have committed 7 to the box, but that's not what happened.

I was so pissed after the game, I could not post without a huge tirade. I am still hurting from this,and there will be a few hard to post things here.
As bad as this game was, for me, it was not as bad as the loss to Sac State last season. This game will be the turning point game, when all is said and done this year. I think there are a few painfully obvious things we are seeing, and good reasons for concern.
(1) This team has to learn to take care of the ball! I expect growing pains and inconsistent play from any young quarterback. Even at that, McKinney's turnovers are beyond acceptable. Yes, JJ forced a few too many things too, but JJ was smarter more often. Trent needs to learn how to throw the damn ball away, now and then. As bad as the outcome was, I was encouraged seeing TM progress through his reads in the 1st quarter. That showed me, he is making progress.
As for turnovers, I am much more understanding of an inexperienced qb struggle, than I am of a SR team captain, lose the ball 3 times in 2 weeks. As much as I enjoy Dan Moore play, come on Dan, you know those fumbles are not acceptable. With that said, I believe this game, will motivate Moore even more (pun intended). He is not going to let this stick with him, and he will be the leader of one very hungry offense, rest this season.
(2) I was not there, but it is discouraging and disappointing, to see some reputable egrizzers post that the team gave up. I hope that was not the case
(3) WTH, happened to our OL and DL. They were soft, and let NAU not only throw them around, but NAU knocked them out!!! Where in the hell is in the pride and heart of the GRIZ? The line performance was absolutely pathetic.
(4) I really did not think about much, until reading other posts, and watching the game again. Since when does a coaching staff take 3 quarters off? This staff let down their team, on both sides of the ball. We were kicking ass with very aggressive play calling on both sides of the ball. Come the 2nd quarter, we went conservative on both sides of the ball. This is very discouraging, especially on defense. Ty Gregorak, you are the last coach anywhere, I would associate the word "conservative" with . Ty, you are not coaching to your strengths, and have become conservative. If you have players out there you are trying to protect, stop it!!! The conservative schemes is killing the unit!!! Quit the love affair with our safeties. Tully and Hermanson are not playing nowhere near their capabilities, get some new blood in there. Seriously, these guys need to watch and find their games, and heads. Bring in Lebsock, Gamboa (who is everywhere on special teams), and Romminger (he will make WR's think 2x's about catching a ball.) The only positives on defense were Kidder, Holmes,Wags, and improved CB play.
Offensively, where in the hell is utilization between the hash marks in the passing game? We used it in the 1st half, and it made a huge difference. I will give NAU credit for adjustments. Honestly to God, there is no reason to not adjust to what they did. They took it away from us, then we gave up on it.
Special teams, actually pretty damn good.
Overall, the coaches and leaders of this team, need to be chewing asses, no matter how minor or major any one mistake is. Not one player, or coach, can accept anything less than 100%, in every aspect of the game. Mick, you have have been coaching long enough and know when an ass kicking is in order. Major ass kicking are in order, no mercy!!!!

SSH took one throw and put it on the money for a TD. That's a decent average.
Yet the staff needs to more quickly adjust (with whomever) when required.
Yesterday they (coaches) left us stuck in a rut too long. Let's hope they learned.

I have read all this and have drawn 3 conclusions:
One: It's not classy for old duffers to call out individual players on message boards.
Two: Griz fans in general need to keep things in better perspective.

I think it's worth looking at this game a couple times before writing off the Griz as not caring, lacking killer instinct or belly fire or attitude or whatever. Here's a youtube video of Bauman performance yesterday. He's a great RB for their system, but their run blocking was superb, too. They used seven guys, five blocking to the direction of the run. UM didn't adjust and just got man handled.
Check out the video and tell us how belly fire, attitude, or killer instinct was what was lacking. You've got two TEs overloading the right side of the offensive line. I'm pretty sure what was missing was coaching. That's a tough front not to adjust to. And the Griz didn't adjust well. The safety should have been outside the hash mark on the overloaded side (in my opinion), and wasn't. The 3-4 was the wrong call alltogether, but even if it was a 4-3 you're still not going to defend the edge. So what are you going to do. Maybe try a 46 defense to get a couple line backers out on the overloaded edge?
I don't know if that's the answer, I know Gregorak couldn't have possibly seen the overload from the opposite sideline. I think that was a huge problem.
The irony is, at CSU Mick and Sonny would regularly overload the one side with double TE sets. I can't imagine he didn't know how to defend it.
Regardless, It's time for eGrizzers to stop wipping their asses with these players. Those players cared, more than you did, believe me.

That was the great thing about Breske's D. Sure, his D may have got caught with their pants down in the first half, but it was usually a given he would make the right adjustments.

There was part of me that actually thought (right after the play where he was on the run and flung it up there for a pick) that he may have been trying to throw it away and missed everything but the field and 3 NAU DB's......................I am rooting for the kid, but accuracy isn't something you pick up in one season.......you have it or you don't.
Oh, and SSH's TD was in mop-up duty and EH had 5 yards on the guy.........you, Gerald Kemp, Justin Roper, Trent Mckinney, and Josh Swogger, Kyle Sampson, and Sean Davis probably could have made that throw.
