Post Game: Hot and then ice cold

I didn't hear any booing of the offense. The student section stayed positive for the whole game. Only booing I heard was for line judge on last long run of Bauman.

There were scattered boos when TM threw up the duck for an INT.

In watching this game, what pissed me off the most is that the team simply gave up. There was no pride or fire, no determination. This was not an us-against-the-world mentality. It was a defeated mentality: heads hanging and no grit, no determination. It seems that the pride and tradition of Montana has been forgotten. I have never seen a Montana team simply stop fighting. It is a sad day to be a Grizly fan. For all the crowd issues, while the lack of a crowd did nothing to cost us the game, it certainly did not help either. Just a bad day.

The good news is that the sun will rise tomorrow and it will be a new day.

+1

I feel like hell has frozen over - NAU won in WaGriz, and I agree with everything HavGriz and 68griz have posted. Bit I am pretty sure the sun will rise in the morning, even if we don't see it.

So could this loss possibly wake more people up and get them to actually realize that they need to be involved and make noise while we're on defense? And maybe think about being back in the stadium to start the 2nd half? I just don't get how going out to have a few more beers during halftime and most of the 3rd quarter is more important than being in the stands to cheer on a team that you paid a lot of money to see... If you want to be social, be social in the stadium while on defense. It's pretty frustrating as others have said... :x

Pdxgrizzly, I don't know whether the team gave up or not, but If you've never seen a Griz team give up before, you obviously didn't see the playoff trip to Western Illinois back in the late 1990's...I still say that's easily the most embarrasing performance by a Montana Grizzly football teaM, at least since 1986 and today's game wasn't even close to that.

1st half.....started out aggressive, and creative on O. Keeping NAU on their heels and TM had time to operate. Other than the first play of the game, the D was getting after the Jacks and, I believe, had 4 sacks.

2nd half...no adjustments more conservative play calling on both sides and NAU gaining confidence after every drive. The Griz could not pull their heads out after the turnovers like they did against South Dakota.

The EWU game will be very interesting.

F-OFF Brint, try losing with a little class, you're program is getting what it deserves! and MSU's is getting what theirs deserves. Even if the Cats don't win a NC this year (or even a Big Sky Conference title for that matter) President Cruzado, AD Fields and all of the MSU coaches have turned MSU's program into a flagship for the way a university athletic dept. should be run. By the way, we'll take the bandwagon fans and UM can have the "rowdy" fans and maybe even recapture some of that thug mentality that brought so many wins and the ultimate destruction of the program by creating the "win at all cost" mentality........that seems to be working out now, doesn't it?

Now, everybody come on here bashing MSU and the Cats and remind us all of the domination of your program and how the Cats really didn't win three championships and the score of last years game, yada yada yada......

What did Brint post that was classless, Jackass? Go back to BN.
Not sure the good folks over at BN want him.

Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back there little brother. There was a time not too long ago that some of our own classless fans were enjoying the fall of Kramer and the Cats. You are a couple of kids making bad decisions from being back there. Every progarm in the nation is. And about winning or losing with class. Go back to the bobcat nation board and read the thread about your WIN against Drake. You guys won and many of your posters were raking the team and coaching over the coals. Get over yourself and by the way..F-OFF right back at ya.

Brint,
I thought the crowd was on early. The constant mistakes and poor execution by our team took it's toll on the exuberance.

What a deflating and demoralizing loss. It's hard to take away anything good from this game.

Lets start with what's due. Congrats to NAU, Zach Bauman, Cary Gossart, and Jerome Souers. They didn't go into panic mode and were the better team today on the field. That NAU O-line opened big holes and took good advantage of our D-ends in blocking. Bauman is a beast, before the game and in my scouting report I said you DON'T want him out in space - well... he got out in space A LOT. Burned us badly. Gossart was steady, his deep passes were light and if they were more on-target he might've thrown for a few deep TDs as well. The NAU defense really didn't impress me much in the first half but they adjusted well and showed what really makes McKinney fall apart - edge blitzing. Souers adjusted well at the half, Delaney did not. In all aspects of the game NAU outplayed and out-coached the Griz. They deserved this win and got it. You can't even look back and say the Griz "gave" them this win (the excuses for many 2010 losses) because they just came out there today and smashed the Griz.

Being the areas of concern, lets start there:

1. I'm seeing parallels to 2010, players are trying to do more than their 1/11th. We had DEs and LBs over-pursuing and getting caught out of position. We had turnovers forced in similar fashion to 2010's. This is a leadership and discipline issue and it's bad when you see the team leaders making these errors. I expect out-of-position or over-pursuit errors from young guys but not our dudes that have been out there for in excess of a full season or two. The coaching staff in 2010 had issues controlling this and it appears that they're having it again.

2. I'm serious, and I don't care if it's EWU next, lets start Lebsock and Rominger. I'm sick and tired of watching Tully get burned and watching both him and Hermanson get caught on their heels and have their arm tackles do nothing. I mean... hell... if we're going to get beat in the passing game anyways lets see if Rominger and Lebsock can at least friggin tackle. Gossart's lame duck passes in the middle of the field would've been picked by just about any other starting safety we've had in the last 15 years. Bo Tully has played 2 seasons now and Hermanson has a full year under his belt, this is not the type of play I expected for/hoped for out of those two.

3. How bad did our play calling on offense get in the 2nd half? Wow, NAU knew what was coming and just rattled our whole system. This is the first game I've seen where watching the game-plan unfold I've really been at a loss for what was sent out there. The first half was so agressive, and then the tone just changed on the drive in the 2nd qtr with Moore's fumble and downhill it went from there. We lost the edge and took our foot off the gas, went into "protect the lead" mode and 34 unanswered points later we were sunk.

4. Jordan Canada looks like he hasn't played football in years. Running right into the backs of his linemen, no cuts, no burst. I know he's been out of sync but he was tearing it up in fall ball. Where is this explosive player we saw last year?

5. Pure speculation here but I can't help but wonder if RS Frosh TMac let his 1st half success get to his head and affect his game. He was on FIRE the first 4 drives, making good reads, going through his progression, just rocking it. But once trouble hit all that swag was gone and suddenly we saw a happy-foot QB with lame-duck throws that could not get his game back. Trent needs to learn from this and make sure to stay consistent throughout the game and not get cocky when you're on a good roll.

6. 3 man front with no edge blitz against a heavy-set run? Yeah..... :(

7. What's happened with Sean Haynes? Great hands, burner in fall camp, starts game 1, now doesn't play until the very last series of the game.

8. Insult to injury the coaching staff fell apart too. Down 10 with the ball on our own 1 and coming out of a TV timeout everyone in the stands realizes that there's only 10 Griz players on the field. People are shouting it, finally as the team lines up Gratton runs out to the slot with his arms up not knowing the play call. Then after we punt we've got 3 timeouts but don't use them when stuffing NAU. Finally on the kneel-down we call a timeout. A guy in front of me shouts, "Mick you gave up ten minutes ago, don't pull this play till the last snap BS now!"

9. 4th game in a row that our staff has not made the right halftime adjustments. This was a staple of Hauck's and Pflugrads. Work out the kinks in the first half, adjust and win in the 2nd. These Griz have been outscored by a compiled 69-42 in the 2nd half of the game this season. That's just gross.

-----------------------

It's tough to come away from this and think about the positives, but with some thought here's what I have.

1. Gotta give props on the aggressive nature of the first 4 possessions on offense. It looked like we were going to blow the hinges off the door. Good calls all around, the punt block was well scouted and executed, the offense had the NAU D on their heels, McKinney was looking at his progressions, and the O-line was protecting and opening up holes really well. We need that team this season if the Griz want a winning record, and we need that team for the FULL GAME.

2. How about Anthony "Chief" Goodwin starting over Nate Harris today? Pretty good for the most part, a few nice break-ups. Tackling against Bauman and breaking blocks needs work but he had some pretty good moments.

3. Need to find Ellis Henderson deep more often, dude has wheels and good hands.

4. Nice game by our two freshman d-line kids, both Holmes and Kidder had a few good plays and pressures. It's great to see Kidder "getting it" and stepping up. He's a great change of pace guy in the middle right now.

5. Not too bad of KRs for Naccarato, ball was in the right hand and he followed his blocking lanes well.

6. Special teams was solid again, some punts were kinda crappy, but of the big 3 teams I'd say ST is playing at the most consistent level right now.

------------------------

This loss is tough pill to swallow because right now there's not much that will convince me otherwise that the Griz will return from EWU 2-3 and not ranked in the top 25 for the first time... in probably what... 30 years? Ugh.

This team needs to re-examine itself and it's got pretty much no time to do it. Last year's team was also 2-2 if I recall correctly with a ton of question marks. This one has even more, they could turn it around and a road win vs EWU would help. Also the 2008 team got their mojo going with a win at EWU... so maybe... yeah.

Remember it's how you respond to these games that defines you. This team now sits on a razor-thin margin of error and can either set the tone for the rest of the season... or just fall further apart. I still have some major faith in this team but they've got so many question marks. A win on the road will start to answer that. It's time to step up.

Go Griz!

Great Job Brint. Unfortunately, your comments are right on. As far as the poor safety play, that falls right on Delany's shoulders. I am sorry. Delany has gone out of his way to "over support" Tully and Hermanson this year. During every news conference and every Scrimmage re-cap, all he did was lavish praise on these two. "Bo Tully is the most improved player on the team", Matt Hermanson started up where he left off last year". The safeties are tackling fantastic now etc. Everyone that watched the scrimmages and games knew that those comments were misplaced but Delany has held firm to his beliefs. The problem is that Mick Delany is a very stubborn man. That is not a good coaching trait. Coach Pflugrad knew there were problems at safety during the recruiting season or he wouldn't have brought in a JC transfer to "shore up" the group. All you have to do is listen to Phlugrad's comments about the safety play in the SHS game. Why did Delany ignore the opinions of his predecessor? Where else on this team is Delany's failure to admit mistakes hurting us?

Spot on as usual Brint. I have been a Griz fans since I knew the difference between Missoula and Bozeman, and I was lucky enough to be a student at UM from 1994-1997, when things really got rolling as far as the program as a whole goes. Maybe I'm getting older and more patient, but it is becomeing quite clear to me that this ride just can't last forever, and maybe the last, well nine months now is just too much to be overcome, at least for this season. A losing season would bother the living hell out of me, but I think I could take it for the same reason as Brint pointed out, from a fan base standpoint, I miss the old, less commercialized, honestly before Egriz, days where the Griz seemed to be OUR little secret and the ONLY thing the fans cared about is that for six or seven Saturday's each year, we were going to make Wash-Griz the most insane, loudest, living hell that it could possibly be. I'm grateful for everything the program has become, for all the $$$$ it generates and for all the good it has done for a lot people, but I was lucky enough to be a tiny part of the CLIMB to this position and now, honestly I don't mind being part of it's descent, to a point. As far as me being a fan, the playcalling can keep getting worse, McKinney can throw 20 more INTS this season, and 2,000 people can put up the next home games tickets on craigslist, and it changes nothing for me. I will love the Griz forever and I'll keep coming back, year after year after year.

Having said all that, there is no way the Griz have a losing season. There are too many garbage teams on their sched and I'm sorry to tell ya, but the Griz have too much talent to lose four more games this season.

Hav

Which teams do you consider garbage? UNC and maybe ISU? You could not mean EWU or MSU. I think you mean SUU, UND, and WSU...but I think these teams are more capable than you want to admit.

Brint..dead on! Acoach getting flagged for getting tun into by ref is ridiculous! Why hot ...against base defense... why cold...NAU adjusted and UM didn't. So predictable on offense! Turnovers inexcusable! Second half lines got asses whipped. See less arm tackling in pee wee games....get someone in who tackles from safety positions. Out played out coached ... long season awaits unless serious changes occur in many areas.

Weber and SUU are not nearly as good as I thought they would be. Weber has a worse D than the Griz. Neither is garbage, but the Griz will beat both. OF COURSE I don't think EWU and MSU are garbage. They are going to play each other for the national title this year and next. GEEZ...I will admit however, I'm a little concerned about the trip to UND. Either way, McKinney can throw 20 more picks this seaosn and the Griz ain't going 5-6. Sorry to hurt some Griz fans' feeling saying that but it just ain't happenin.

Very good writeup Brint. Couldn't agree more on every point. Our O looked great then all of a sudden we went all Dan Reeves taking the foot off the gas once we had a decent lead (Yeah.. I'm a broncos fan and suffered through many years of that). As we saw, once the foot is off the gas it's very difficult to get it going again.

I don't think it helped TM much that our pass protection really started to suck in the 2nd half too. He made a few bad decisions too while pressured. He's a freshman though and that's to be expected... Makes me wonder how things would've turned out if we kept our foot on the gas and put NAU away instead of whatever the fuck we did...

Pretty much agree with everything you said about the safety play too. Had something much longer written here about that, but figured you said it best... plus my comments about someone you mentioned being more interested in hugging the ball carrier and running along side them than tackling probably wouldn't go over too well... I hope we get to see the other two get a shot..

One thing to add, we were 2-2 last year and honestly looked downright awful offensively if I remember right (blown out by sac state in the 4th game). So this team definitely still has time to turn things around.. It's a tough road ahead though... @EWU, @ND and MSU & SUU at home are not going to be cake walks. @Weber could be rough too (who knows). Hope things get figured out.

6. 3 man front with no edge blitz against a heavy-set run? Yeah.....
I agree with this Brint 100% I was not real happy with this alignment in the App State game, and could not believe my eyes when I saw this yesterday.

we got flagged for that exact same call against the coaching staff during the App State game. Talk about not learning from your mistakes.

I would have put the second string QB in a lot sooner.
TMac lost his swag and composure and so did Moore. After the first turn over in the 3rd quarter.
Putting a scond string QB is not saying you are giving up on the first string QB, it is saying that you realize that he is in quicksand and the team needs help at that time.

Can't help but wonder after watching Shay drop a very well thrown ball right into Henderson's hands if we'll see #19 get some reps? Might either show what a more dynamic/accurate passing game could offer or could light a fire under TMac to keep his edge during the whole game.

Goodwin had a nice game. Defended well on the long ball early. Made some nice plays/tackles on the edge.

On S-H's td pass, the receiver was open by about 4 steps. It was not a difficult pass. Yes, he dropped it in nicely.
