As far as heat goes, I really hope that UM tries it's best to schedule the first home game as a night game every year from now on.
Yeah, why the he'll do they have lights If they are not going to use em when it is100 degrees outside?

I'm quite certain the reason it wasn't a night game was because of travel logistics for Valpo. Make that a night game, and they're going to demand another night's hotel stay from us. Figure 200 people at $100 per, and it's pretty easy to see why UM wouldn't want to do that. Sucks for the fans, but you gotta pay the bills.

I agree, but I think the additional cost is the extra wait time for the charter plane from let's say 6pm for a day game versus midnight for a night game.

I still think the OL will be an issue. Very little push in the running game and they had to go max protect most the game. Outside of Savannah and maybe ISU, I am not sure they will play a defense below the level of Valpo.

This...

Quote from bob stitt taken from the Colters post game article

- "I don’t know what we are figuring out on offense and defense. We just scored 45 points, we were 5-of-5 in the red-zone, we had a tipped pass that should’ve been a touchdown, a few things that didn’t go right. But it was a pretty good day offensively,” Stitt said. “Defensively, we missed a couple calls. The guys were having a tough time communicating but those are quick fixes. Until we had the long one late in the game in the second half, they really had nothing on our defense. We weren’t figuring anything out. We had it figured out.”

I really didn't like this quote from stitt. Just don't like that he's insinuating everything was all good when it was clearly not. When playing a team with just 12 wins in a decade and you're only up by 3 with two minutes left in the third, you don't have it all figured out and clearly have a lot of work to do.

As opposed to saying something that some would insinuate he is throwing players and/or coaches under the bus? I swear, coaches here just cannot win, with our fanbase.

Yes, that is the curse of being a D1 coach (probably any level really). Every arm chair quarterback (myself included) is just waiting to pick you apart. Every game, call you make, missed tackle, post game statement, etc. Smart coaches don't watch the news or read the paper. Unless they are interviewing another coach - that is.

Humility. The idea that the Griz "had it figured out" is not what many fans perceived. He's the coach, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Some coaches would have said something like, "As expected, we had some issues on both sides of the ball today. We'll work our tails off to get those things fixed. I can improve, our coaches can improve, and this team will continue to improve. UW will not be so forgiving. Our goals remain in tact for the season."

FWIW - I am no D1 coach. I've been told I am a pedestrian fan.

Yes, some coaches could and would have done the coach speak, saying absolutely nothing meaningful. I prefer coaches who speak their minds, at least at times. I like feisty coaches. Don't know if Stitt is feisty or not. I liked his quote. It shows that the coaches felt pretty good about how the team played overall, and are not overly concerned about the mistakes. This was also my impression of the game. Good but not great. Glad to see that he believes the mistakes are fixable. Sounds like the bigger defensive mistakes were mental and communication errors. My biggest concern, besides that the Huskies are very good, are the players missing or not at full speed at safety and middle backer. This is not a diss at all on the players getting the most minutes are those positions. Strong and Strahm are proven good players and seniors. Sandry, like all players, are better when fully healthy.

Lastly, as I often have said, it's some of the fans who need to "figure it out".

I'll be honest. I don't think this team thought Valpo was as good as they are. Watching the recording of the game we didn't look particularly bad but we have a weak back end on defense and the lack of pressure up front will give opposing offenses a field day. Good passing teams will shred us if we "don't figure things out" and get players in a position to make plays. Maybe the phrase work things out isn't the best choice of words. Adjustment and assignment maybe the better choice. My hope that next week we are competitive and hang in for awhile. Prediction. UM 21....uw.....42

The guy next to me quipped, "Our OL line run blocking looks like a pillow fight." I damn near coughed up my drink laughing, because he nailed it.

How many crappy 1st game of the season games did Hauck's teams have. There were some real stinkers against DII teams and then especially ND state come to mind!

Oh good; pretty much like last year.

If UM had bad fans the palace wouldn't be as full as it was. Tired of the blame the fans shtick. Also tired of criticism about not blindly supporting the staff. Guarantee the staff wasn't happy so why should we be. Stitt himself was on the news before the game talking about how this was going to be a blowout. A lot to work on but scary part is most is not new or player related.
With you. Sat on the east side and never missed a play, dehydrated, but I'm a bad fan because I criticize coaching when it deserves it. Stitt's blowout comments are not unlike his comments last year about how he was going to run up the score on Gregorak.

Ugly: The fans leaving early in the 4th quarter. I've never seen the stadium emptier in the 4th quarter than today. I'm really sure the players, especially the defense, appreciated that. Great support...

Yeah, fans starting to wane in confidence. Another year this year like last year and I doubt games will be sell outs anymore

Doubt it had much to do with confidence. It was hot as hell in there and people literally couldn't handle it. It was the hottest game I can recall! Folks on the east side were baked!
We sit above the cannon in the upper deck and about half way in the 3rd the heat got even worse. If you sit with your back to the sun that's a whole lot different than it in your face. But the players had it much worse so I feel bad to complain. Reason #1 billion to have NIGHT GAMES EARLY IN THE SEASON. I know Montana does not get to make that choice, to bad.
It wasn't a Root game; Montana could have make that choice.

Like I said, I sat next to former UM starting o-lineman, and he liked how the o-line played. Better on pass blocking and good some of the time in run blocking. Sorry, but I would take Burton's analysis over whomever was sitting next to you.

Note that there's a difference between unknowledgeable fans and bad fans.

Comments by coaches before games are not the same as comments after games. Coaches are more likely to be wrong before the game than after the game.

Always the name dropper; 139 yards in 35 rushes against one of the lowest rated FCS programs sets the bar pretty low. Note I referred specifically to run blocking - oh, and without name dropping, the guy sitting next to me only coached HS football for 35 years.

And never, ever hold them accountable for being wrong.

Observations after watching the game:

1) Markell Sanders looked lost in the first quarter. First two big pass plays were over him.
2) Cowans appears to be the real deal, conversely. Great in run support.
3) Agreed on whoever mentioned that Phillips appears to throw the ball about 1/2 second too late on some passes--especially the out route.
4) While O-line run blocking wasn't spectacular, on several occasions it appears the RB's ran right up there backs when there were nice holes to be had. Also it seemed several times early they were running "gingerly?" Timidly? Seemed to get better by the TD drive late in the 2nd qtr and beyond.
5) JLM might be good. But he should have caught that ball that ended up being the INT. Conversely, I bet that guy who intercepted it thought he got run over by a TRUCK when #74 fell on him.
6) Had Phillips slid on his first run he would have avoided the fumble...he took a HARD shot!
7) Not sure what Sandry was thinking on Valpo's first TD...no way that guy should get behind him--other than he thought Sims was getting the sack...
8) Valpo's QB avoided pressure very well...lots of times guys were in the backfield but couldn't quiiiiite catch him. I counted at least 8 times he was being chased by multiple players...in the backfield....so not sure where the "Griz couldn't get pressure" stuff was coming from. In fact, he got HAMMERED by Cowans on Sandry's pick. Hammered. And Favaroso was in the backfield on that play as well. Also, Seward got SMOKED by Schye on Epperly's INT. For there being "no pressure", the Valpo QB sure seemed to be picking himself up off the ground a lot. And Schye's sack came on 3-man pressure against a 7-man front.
9) There was lots of talk on several threads about the size differential between our O-line and their D-line...and that because of that we should have dominated them from the start. I'm not sure what they were seeing. Their D-linemen were 260, 270 and 290. That's not small.
10) Watching Simis get so excited, even on successful running plays just makes me like him even MORE. Dude just loves playing football.
11) James Banks has upped his game...I was wondering if he was really "all that" but he appears to be...
12) On several occasions the RB missed the blitzing LB (Lee at least once, Calhoun at least once)...that needs to be recognized earlier. On Curran's TD early in the 4th, Calhoun picked it up nicely.
13) Watching Sprunk teabag #99 was priceless. The PLAY didn't work, but that made it worth it.
14) Hope Bingham's injury isn't serious...
15) Epperly should have had another INT. Good NIGHT that hit him right in his hands.
16) Randy Rodriguez has cat like quickness. Damn....
17) Someone said they only saw the D-line in the down position 2-3 times. Bullshit. I counted at least a couple dozen snaps where they were in the down position.
18) Buss was significantly faster than their QB. Watching him run the QB down was impressive. And he was running step for step when in coverage with the WR.
19) Man did McKinley get a nice jump on that "almost" pick six. Really should have had that.
20) Calhoun got his bell rung on his last play, with about 6:30 left in the 4th. He never returned...if that's another concussion, we are in deep shit at RB.
21) Must still be preseason for the Learfield graphics operator. Multiple times they had the wrong down and distance on the TV graphics, wrong score at least twice (7-7, 23-13), etc., etc.

Found: QB, Punter, Kicker
Looking for: Any healthy safety, backup running back
