I still think the OL will be an issue. Very little push in the running game and they had to go max protect most the game. Outside of Savannah and maybe ISU, I am not sure they will play a defense below the level of Valpo.
The guy next to me quipped, "Our OL line run blocking looks like a pillow fight." I damn near coughed up my drink laughing, because he nailed it.
Like I said, I sat next to former UM starting o-lineman, and he liked how the o-line played. Better on pass blocking and good some of the time in run blocking. Sorry, but I would take Burton's analysis over whomever was sitting next to you.
Always the name dropper; 139 yards in 35 rushes against one of the lowest rated FCS programs sets the bar pretty low. Note I referred
specifically to run blocking - oh, and without name dropping, the guy sitting next to me only coached HS football for 35 years.
Again, I will take the view of a recent former starting Griz o-lineman who was paying close attention to o-line play, especially in the first half, over anyone you would be sitting next to or talking to the at the game, especially an unnamed high school coach. Sorry, Kem, the comment of your pillow fighting friend sounds either like a joke, or just plain out to lunch. Feel free to name the guy, and we can look at his o-line credentials. I named my source.
I am not trying to say run blocking was great, but it was pretty good most of the time, especially in the first half (when we were paying more attention to it). I liked how they pounded the ball on the goal line to finish a few drives. Hurry up, and Calhoun pounding. 2 scores. This is an improvement; UM had trouble in the red zone last year.
For the first 2 Griz TD's, Calhoun 3 plays in a row and then 4 plays in a row. 4, 2, 1 (TD), and he also had a run 2 plays before that sequence. 3, 6, 5, 1 (TD). 7 plays for 22 yards, slightly over a 3 yard average. I'll take all 7 of those plays in that situation anytime.
As I said before, I think the backs didn't get enough longer runs out of the holes they had. Of the 35 UM rushes, only 2 rushes over 7 yards: 10 and 12. Only 2 rushes for losses, of 1 yard each. Isn't it the responsibility of the backs to get the longer runs?
