Post Game: Backs to the wall

Many of the issues we are seeing are related to coaching in one fashion or another. IMO. Sure, there are issues with the line, running, qb's,etc. But there should not be issues with coaching, and I'm beginning to think there is.
We have the talent to salvage the season. Only one conference loss right now. With the proper coaching we could still see a finish toward the top of the conference standings. I'm still trying to be as optimistic as I can - next two games are must wins for numerous reasons, momentum and confidence being two big ones. Coaches will need to rally this team, we'll see if they are capable.
GO GRIZ!

When Sttt was first hired i posted that we had better not have very high expectations in year one or maybe even year two. There is a huge transition going from School of MInes to UM and we are now seeing that. The talent is generally there minus the OL but we are regressing week by week vs. getting better as we shohld be. I also said that we had better get used to going for it on 4th down like it or not--that is the way Stitt coaches and we had better accept it. ONe positve thing in all of this is that we need not worry about him heading to "greener pastures" anytime soom as was highly speculated after the game 1 win. How can we go from beating the defending national champs to losing to a team we should have beaten by 3-4 touchdowns--someting is terribly wrong and it is not going to be fixed this year i would bet.

Holy hell. The sky is not falling people. Pull back and take a look from the 30,000 foot level. The program has been a roller coaster ride for quite some time now. No consistency for years due to Bobby heading south, Pflu getting canned, Delaney delivering triage, and now a new coach, new QB's, new system, and unrealistic fans. I hate to let everyone in on a little secret - it is going to take some time!! The reality is the Griz have not recruited effectively for key positions. Those positions happen to be on the line - both sides of the ball. The program is a ways off from recovering. The roller coaster ride has not been fun, but poor leadership from Main Hall only added a huge can of gas to the dumpster fire. Be patient, don't be that fan and give thanks that you are not rooting for the Cats. They have had consistency at head coach for quite some time. Imagine how that feels - no don't imagine it actually.

I think it's going to take 3 years for the program to get going. That will give Stitt two full recruiting classes and time to develop the program. I personally think we will be very lucky to be .500 this season and next.

My bigger concern is if Stitt still can bring in the talent needed to run his show at UM. I say this because of all of the less than positive happenings and events over the past few years.

Let's hope the new Champions Center has a huge impact.

It already does... I believe, I think we won over a few recruits with the plans and commitment that they'll train in it one day.

Losing sucks. Losing to Weber really sucks. And some Griz fans can really suck when the team loses too.

Here’s to a restful week off, some improved health from the team, and hopefully a better game in two weeks!

GO GRIZ!

This is the part that I can't stand. Fair weather fans. The most upsetting part of being part of such a tremendous football program. We are very lucky to have what we have- it's unique to all other states- some similar, like North Dakota & perhaps Idaho. This is the big game & we are always at the forefront, win or lose. I will cheer for this team if we went 0-6, but I have a sinking feeling there wouldn't be many of us. Which hurts my heart. . . .

Remember when Pflugrad shifted us from a pro style offense to a zone-read offense and we spent the first year bitching that Pflugrad was stupid and his only good quality was his daughter? Everyone was chirping that the cupboards were bare, Bobby left us with a mess, blah blah blah. Oh, then in year two we were 11-3 playing the FCS semi-finals, a game we probably should have won. You would think that Griz fans would be smart enough to learn from that experience.. obviously I was mistaken.

such a disheartening loss and frustrating as well with the talent we have......i like simis and think he could be great as our qb until willy gets his chance.
i made a point to focus on ty in the last quarter and watched him through my binoculars (sitting on the west side half way down on the northside 40 yd line) to study his facial expressions and body language. you could see that he was frustrated and pissed that he either did not have an answer to stopping this offense or not having his players perform with what he was expecting. perhaps both. yes, we held them to less production in the second half but they still controlled the line of scrimmage to keep the TOP which frustrated him, you could see it when they would advance on 3rd and 9 and 3rd and 6 several times..........they ran out the clock in the 4th quarter. remmants of cal poly
whatever is happening you can see the frustration or dissatisfaction on the coaches faces and jestures on the sidelines during the game..........whether it was stitts acting furious when there was no interference call on hendu in the second half or expressing disbelief at simis on our last play in overtime there is a questioning sense that we are all feeling with this team that reflects on execution and coaching.
yes there is more parity growing every year in the bigsky and fcs so to be competitive it does depend on consistency........... performing fundamentals (blocking and tackling), execution (reads and ability), coaching skills (staying in the game being one step ahead of your opponent) and staying focused on the team effort.
weber was better than us on these things yesterday.

And you consider yourself a writer? 98.7% of the readers stopped paying attention to your post after you mentioned Pflugrad's daughter. C'mon, you're better than that, Mr. T!!

Whatever, I got to go take care of something.

I've always loved the fair weather fan bull from the people who reside in Missoula. I have attended every home game since 1989. During that time I got the kids in the car early in the morning(ages 1-18 over the years) and drove to missoula to watch the football games. I've hit 3 deer, slid off icy roads, not to mention the cost of travel, and rubbed frozen toes when the kids were cold. I bucked up whenever the athletic dept. asked for money(even when I didn't have it). My wife and I are now solo yet both my kids travel to Missoula from their current homes to meet us because of their deep Griz roots. Both are at msu because of curriculum decisions and still travel to Missoula to watch football. It worries me because I've experienced the dangers first hand. So in two weeks when the Missoula crowds leaves the game try and remember that we fair weather fans are in route to our homes. By the way I'm not impressed with the offense. It lacks leadership and is predictable........whoops sorry I if offended the real football fans.

A punt against Cal Poly and a couple of field goal attempts yesterday and this place would be happy as hell. Make questionable coaching decisions in front of 25-26,000 fans and on tv, people will and have the right to bitch. It's not DII playing in front of a couple of thousand in bum XXXX Colorado. Not giving up my season tickets in the northend zone. Go Griz

The Griz were 7-4 under Pflu in his first year; anyone I know would take 7-4 at this point. Pflu was not too proud to thumb his nose at 3 points when it meant increasing chances for a W. Most "Griz fans would be smart enough to learn from that experience."

Pflugrad is now basically unemployed. Stitt still has a job. I'd say let's not get too twisted out of shape about conventional wisdom when it comes to coaching decisions. This fan base knew from day of if Stitt being on the job that conventional coaching is completely out the window.. in fact, the national media knew this years ago. This place would be the total opposite had one of those 4th downs converted and either was a TD, or became a TD.

Good post Brint. You discussed many issues, not just the 4th down plays, which is important. As far as getting back on track, the Griz play in the very unpredictable Big Sky Conference where anything can happen. In a conference where one week UC Davis beats NAU and WSU beats the Griz at home, this team can still make a run. I predicted a 7-4 finish at the beginning of the season. So I'll stick with that
prediction.

Pflu coaches at Phoenix College, with another very experienced (head) coach. http://www.phoenixcollege.edu/employees/11572/pflugrad

That didn't happen did it; with a third string QB in his first game, the probability was not so hot. The FGs were a pretty sure bet and would have been about the equivalent of the elusive TD you're dreaming about. The kind of "unconventional coaching" that turns W's to L's.... Like it all you want; most Griz fans don't.

Expressing displeasure with the coaching does not make someone a fair weather fan. I am displeased with the coaching staff and support the Griz as much now as ever. For fans there is next year the year after etc. But an exceptional senior class is losing out because of poor coaching. I would be estatic if we can get it turned around but I having very little hope for that.
Go Griz
