Poor kaimin paper

I just don't understand why they reported it when they did if the incident happened months earlier AND everyone involved seemed happy with how things ended up being handled. That is what, to me, makes it seem like an attack rather than just reporting the news. It was over and done and no one involved was upset, so why bring it back up?

Because this makes for a great story (or not) - Drunk, smartass frat boys fight over the top, adrenalin lazed football players. This has been happening for years - happened when I was in college in the 80's is going to continue to happen in the future. Possibly we should go after the fraternities and their supply of booze to underage kids - na that would be any fun....

An expose' (sp?) on "What's really in an Ole's dog?" would have been good when I was in school. 3 for a buck was an easy choice at 2am. Probably ate there more than at Food Services.

That's just what happened after the 1996 brawl in front of Sigma Chi. The school brought the hammer down on the greeks after that fight, and the type of parties the frats could throw after that was totally different.

I don't remember how those football players were disciplined for that one. The fraternities took the brunt of it. Winning the NC makes the Kaiman, school and cops look at these things a bit differently, doesn't it?

I hesitate to even get involved in this thread because everyone has an emotionally charged opinion that isn't going to change. Somehow it has turned in to a "you're with the team or you're not" which is a bit ridiculous. A couple of non-truths are getting stretched and stated as fact that I can't let go by.

OK, we've heard from two folks from the journalism school - one the current editor, another a former editor of the Kaimin.

The current editor improperly used the idiomatic expression "take the bad with the good", stating instead that we must "take the good with the bad", which in the context used was somewhat nonsensical.

The former sports editor, swgriz24, makes statements such as this:



Annual football revenues are approx 4 million dollars (3.8 - 4.2 million)
student fees (30x14000) = 420,000

No amount of spin makes 420,000 dollars "a hell of a lot more than your precious season tickets".

Statements such as this are illuminating, as it demonstrates not only an inability to perform simple arithmetic (bad for a college student), but worse (for a journalist), a willingness to make statements based on emotion rather than fact.

The journalism school is an embarrassment.

You're right. I did just fire off that post out of emotion. It was my fault. But I was just thinking that the student fees paid for more than just that one person's season tickets. I wasn't taking all season ticket holders into account. Again, that was a mistake.

You recognized how unfair it is to make sweeping statement about a group as a whole just because an individual member (or members) of that group flubbed.
That is precisely the point I wished to make.
Even the editor(s) of the Kaimin (the tools of whose trade are words, grammar, punctuation, and idiomatic forms of speech - not to mention, responsible journalism) can make mistakes in an emotional situation, why then should coach Hauck be held to a different standard?
Athletes, like the ones who play for the Grizzlies, are learning (life's lessons) "out loud for the public to see", perhaps more visibly due to the high profile of the football program.

I don't think it necessary to "paint with broad strokes" the shortcomings of the football program for the bad behavior of a few.

Just to dot some is and cross some ts, no one has listed a succession of past errors by journalism students and cast aspersions directed at the administration of the school, to do so would be ridiculous.

....and no, I don't think the school of journalism is an "embarrassment".

If an Urban Meyer or a Charlie Weis had dropped the F-bomb at a press conference, it would have been the lead story on Sportscenter as well as every sports talk show on the cable dial. At UM, Bobby's behavior becomes a hot topic on a popular message board. At a big school, it would be national news.

Certainly, Bobby's annoyed reaction was not a good one when he dropped the F-bomb. Don't further sensationalize it by implying that he dropped the F-bomb during a news conference.

Pardon me I wasn't clear, grzz and Team Kaimin posts are perhaps the best post on any subject on Egriz.com. Both clearly outlined both the coach's and the Kaimin's shortcomings in this situation. Well done grzz and Team Kaimin.
