Poor kaimin paper

When the Kaimin reporters graduate and go looking for a job, their potential employer will think it pretty cool that they wouldn't be pushed around and intimidated. On the other hand, when Bobby goes to look for his next job, his potential employer will ascertain that he often behaves like a child and can't even make nice with the student newspaper.

I have one question to ask for those egrizers that have posted replies on both sides of this topic....How much of a factor was either the Kaimin story on Bobby or the Kaimin story on Cal Poly at homecoming?

I was not able to make the journey from Atlanta this year but know people who did and know their answer to this question, but what about those that were at homecoming pregame festivities, the game, and post game festivities that have made posts?

Non factor. I'm sure Bobby isn't losing any sleep because the Kaimin is on a witch hunt. They are only hurting themselves and their credibility the longer the play this thing out. It was 10-1 in favor of Bobby from the people I talked to at the game and tailgates saturday. I was personally looking for somebody who was handing out gameday kaimins so I could tell him what to do with it. I didn't succeed but my wife did, and thats wayyyyy worse than if I had :D

The Kaimen isn't on a witch hunt. Just because the reported negatively about the teflon Bobby Hauck doesn't mean they are on a witchhunt. They reported the news, and obviously it garnered interest or else this thread wouldn't STILL be alive. Its as much of a non issue as it was in the first place, and the only people that are making it an issue are the ones that think Bobby can do no wrong. They are a student newspaper that were reporting on STUDENTS for STUDENTS. As well, you don't do the University of Montana, or the U of M football team any favors by not supporting the Kaimen. The Kaimen is a U of M institution just like the football program, and without it a large part of the student population wouldn't hear about the Griz at all...because not many read the Missoulian. But go ahead and keep up some silly indignation that makes no sense, and is about a 44 year old man in a stupid pissing match with some people 25 years his junior.

...great advice for b h..never get in a pissing match...
...with anybody that buys their ink in 55 gallon drums...

... 8-) ...

hlnagriz, you contradict yourself in your post. First you say, the Kaimin "reported the news" but in the same breath you say "its as much of a non issue as it was in the first place."

If its a non-issue than it aint news and there's no reason to report it. Both sides f'd up but to me the Kaimin is more to blame because the victim and his family did not want to run it. After that, it did turn into a witchhunt because there was no other reason to run it. Everyone involved was satisfied, except for a third party paper. That's like the definition of a witchhunt.

There are 2 lessons the journalist students should have learned here. First, don't bite the hand that feeds ya, and second, football aint a game/sport. It's more akin to war than checkers. Therefore, don't expect a coach to play nice and be happy with what little you get. You have to realize that most of griz nation love Bobby for the way he treats the media (not because he's arrogant but because it helps us win).

The way Bobby holds grudges, i'd be surprised if the Kaimin ever gets an interview with him or a player again. I don't blame him.

You know, I hate to say it, but the victims in these deals (and their families) don't really get to call the shots.

Bobby should rise above this and make himself even more available to the media, especially the Kaimin. The best way for him to "get back at them" is to be open, gracious, and available. They feed on secrecy. He should give them none.

Bobby, any coach, or any player owe any form of media absolutely ZERO!

F the media. They are usually trying to set them up to say something they shouldn't anyway, so they can have their "big story". Bobbys job is to win games, not cater to reporters.

Don't be idiots. Of course the head coach has to be involved with public relations, which necessarily entails dealing with the media. He doesn't have to kowtow, but he has to do this effectively. In general, Bobby Hauck does a very good job with this. As well he should.

The victim should call the shots. It's their life as opposed to some journalist who is motivated by "if it bleeds, it leads." In MT, the right to privacy is a fundamental right, much like freedom of speech. The difference is the right to privacy extends into private sectors, and should therefore trump in this situ.

Imagine if this were a rape story instead of a fight. Would the Kaimin still run the story even if the woman asked not to draw more attention to herself? I sure hope not.

Finally, someone pm'd me and stressed that Bobby didn't call the victim (or his family). It was vise versa. If true, that seems to kill the Kaimin's theory. Not only did they get the facts wrong, but it appears that Bobby wasn't trying to sweep this under the rug, rather he was respecting their wishes.

Are you kidding me? If the rape victim wanted to remain anonymous, they would not use her name. But if a football player did something like that, your damn right the Kaimin should write about it, especially if the coach handled it all in house without even the Dean of Students, whose job it is to deal with things like the real situation and your hypothetical. There two completely different situations, but that is a poor example to try and fault the paper.

story starting to spread:

This story goes to show why the stance Hauck is taking is self-defeating at best. I will venture to guess that the author of this story is a Kaimin or J-School alum. Those grads are all over the place and most of them are not going to take Hauck's side in this scrape. Does anyone on this board see a scenario where Bobby can "win" here?
Hauck should bury the hatchet before this story spreads further and damages his reputation. If this story goes national, it will also not look very faltering for the Griz or UM. Nothing affects a coach's reputation worse than a coach that casts his employer in a bad light.
