I would have loved to have Van. But it simply wasn't possible for us to wait on him. Not when we had 3 other talented backs ready to go. I hope T. Van does great at Montana.

He's off to one hell of a start. :thumb:

I'm a big fan of Travon Van...and I'm glad things seem to be working out for him in Montana.

As far as his time at Marshall, he was always a big play waiting to happen...but his vision just didn't fit the offense we run.

Here are some numbers for you. This is NOT a putdown of Van. Again, our offense requires specific skills to be successful for RB's (we had another guy who looked like a feature back in 09 who fell off the depth chart in 2010 with the coaching change).

2012 season:

Travon Van: 39 carries, 93 yards...2.4 ypc average.

The 4 backs that passed him:
Kevin Grooms: 121 carries, 737 yards...6.1 ypc (Freshman)
Steward Butler: 101 carries, 500 yards...5.0 ypc (Freshman)
Remi Watson: 79 carries, 380 yards...4.8 ypc (Freshman)
Essray Talifero: 58 carries, 251 yards...4.3 ypc (Junior walk-on)

All of those backs have different skill sets than Van...and have better instincts within our offensive system for finding creases and getting through them.

It's not that we pushed him out the door. It just didn't work out here...and I am thrilled it is working for him there. Hope you guys win it all with him. Great kid, good top-end speed.

You guys should watch us sometime...our backs are really, really quick...and fit the system.

Thanks for the informative post. I have no doubt your backs are quick and very talented. I have watched T Van two times now ( one was a scrimmage) and is it possible he just needed time to mature? I realize your program could not wait and I completely understand that, but he sure seems to have been able to find the crease in this past Saturday's game. Truthfully it does not matter - what is important is him looking happy and I got the sense he was right at home. In the end it worked out ok for both programs ( has worked out great for he Griz and thank you!!!) Good luck to the herd this season and I will try and watch your team for one game. Kind of tough after the last game we played you, but I will try.

Lets all hope that he has continued success and stays healthy.

The kid was hurt for 2 years, plain and simple...

Van had terrific vision in this game. He finished runs going forward for the extra yard, and showed surprising power. He also has jukes, acceleration and speed, as well as that terrific spin move. I'm definitely signing this thank you note.

Add my John Hancock to the list.

I listened to the game ... exceptional defense! Offense was burnin' it up.

Eastern Washington and Montana State better have a superior defense or Montana will be the 2013 Big Sky Champions.

Go Griz!

Hopefully hanging out on eGriz doesn't produce THAT type of "wood."
I thought the vast majority of Herd fans on their board were very classy. Best of luck to them!

Go Griz!

Ironically, Appy's place kicker used to play at Marshall.

It's a small world out there.

Go Griz! Good luck and here's to a great season.
You can see the Herd reunion in the top left of this pic. :thumb:
