Playoff Committee Poll

I seriously don't understand MSU ahead of UM. If they had won their play-up game or the SDSU game, then sure. But what reason is there when they have less FCS wins than Montana with a strength of schedule that's otherwise fairly comparable?
Because the cats AD is on the committee and is there’s some home cooking. All we gotta do is win the Brawl and they don’t have a leg to stand on.

Anyone still think ND can win against NDSU? Seems like the only chance they get a loss. If they do and Griz win out, do Griz get #1 spot?

Odds are better in this scenario for Montana to get the 1 seed if NDSU were to lose only to UND. But it would also depend on other factors. How close of a loss was it? I could see even with a close loss, NDSU potentially still getting the 1 seed.

After we win, the Bob on the committee will find a way to say that MSU actually deserves the higher seed because the Brawl was in Missoula and therefore was basically another "play-up" game for the Bobs, and the Griz didn't play any "play-up" games, and therefore it really counts as a win for the Bobs, and a loss for the Griz because it hurt their SOS. Never underestimate BobLogic.

That is a legit question, why is msu ahead? I don't have a good answer. Presumably it is a strength of schedule argument. The bobcats are being rewarded for losing by 46 points to Oregon. They gain more love because they lost again to one of the only two ranked FCS teams they have played. So, losing to two of their three ranked opponents is their SOS badge of honor. Appears that is why their 7-2 squad is ahead of our 9-0 team. That is not a good answer, but apparently it is the answer.

Thankfully the sequence of where they placed our teams today really is inconsequential. If our Griz win out they will settle the matter for the committee. The cat/Griz game winner will be a top two seed. Period. If the loser doesn't get blown out, they may possibly still be among the top four seeds. Thus, being the #2 and #3 seeds today is important, which team is where is not important.

The real mystery is why the committee was so generous to So. Dakota State. After two consecutive awful games it's hard to understand how they're #6. Yes, the QB is injured. Perhaps he will return, perhaps not. None the less, their results on the field should have dropped them off the top ten list.

They will rightfully climb back up the list if they win their final three games. Though at present you have a team in the midst of a two game losing streak which included getting absolutely pounded, then losing badly to a team everyone else has pounded. The committee is certainly biased on this one.

Depends. I oftentimes wonder if they honestly don’t have a common understanding of the criteria. I think some are looking at a team’s work as a whole up to that point. I think some look at how good they think each team is at that moment in time. I think others look to Sagarin and Massey. Sounds like they are subjectively looking at how each team is playing at this point in time. The cats have made a much better case for the number two seed if conference play is more heavily factored in. They are playing better defense and their offense is statistically better in conference play. They have done better against common opponents. Hell, if they were to play the Griz on a neutral field, I think they win (just one guy’s honest opinion…Akem said as much this week too). On the other hand, the Griz have played a better FCS schedule and have a better resume. The Griz defense is rapidly improving - the team is clearly ascending. Like most have said - none of this matters when the Griz win the brawl. Have to take care of business!

Think about the reasoning behind putting these rankings out in early October and in early November....there is no reason....other than to generate hype about the FCS playoffs....and the easiest way to generate hype? Create arguments. Easiest way to create arguments? Rage bait the most passionate fan base in the FCS...

Good thing the Bob on the committee has to recuse himself from any of that discussion. I don't doubt for a minute that the poll has to do with Bob, but I believe it will all work itself out in the end. The starting point is going 1-0 this week.

This logic by the NCAA's Stan Becton is priceless. Remedial college math has failed Stan badly. And, Central Washington's only loss of the season is to Montana. They would do fine in FCS.

"While the Brawl of the Wild will ultimately decide which team is ranked higher at the end of the season, we can get a good gauge of what the committee is valuing in the difference in the ranking of the two teams.

Even though Montana State has two losses — one FBS and one FCS — they still rank in front of the undefeated Grizzlies. What stands out between the two are the number of FCS wins. Montana State has seven FCS wins while Montana has just eight FCS wins because the Grizzlies played a non-DI opponent, Central Washington.

That Central Washington game lessens Montana's strength of schedule, which likely places the undefeated Grizzlies behind their in-state rival, even though Montana has a win over a talented North Dakota squad."
