Playing time comparison (Big Sky & Top 10)

Duke's starting guards (Jones and Cook) last year averaged 36 and 34 min/game for the entire year, I'd imagine the total was higher in conference play because Duke played some patsies in non-conf where those two would sit. It worked out pretty well for them...

Wisconsin had 3 players average over 33 minutes a game last year, they did just fine...

With TV timeouts every 4 minutes of game play and so much stop and go, players can play a lot more minutes now a days. Good coaches find time just before TV timeouts to rest players, so they may only miss 1-2 minutes of game time, but they'll sit for a good 10 minutes of actual time.

Quit coming over to our board and bitch slappin PR, would ya!

40 minute games with a 15 minute halftime, 8 media TO's, 8 or 10 team TO's, numerous stops for video review, and numerous FT's are tough on young, superbly conditioned kids.

Oh and in case you hadn't heard.....the only reason EWU won the title game last year was because the Griz wore down.

You think I didn't know that? Hell we all know that PR. Your posting style is the same every time you get in a debate with someone that involves statistics where you didn't actually take the time to research the topic. It's like you follow a script. It's hilarious

  • 1. Throw shit wildly around about something you don't like or perceive to be a problem. Repeat until something sticks or someone calls you out on it.

    2. If called out on it start asking stat related questions that you think will strengthen your side of the argument and that the person most likely wont bother looking up.

    3. If the person does look it up and posts the stats that show your argument is incorrect, only read the first couple lines, realize that the stats don't back your side, and either:
    • a. Stop posting completely and just bitch about that person (and others) to people who sit around you at the basketball game while they try to watch the game. This can be done instead of/or with your usual bitching about Stitt and talking about what DeCuire is doing wrong.
      b. Move the goal posts, claim the person is a liar, and demand their sports resume because they obviously never played the game. After that ask more questions where you probably wont like the answers and will ignore them anyway.
    4. Repeat step 1 until the person either facepalms hard enough to give themselves a concussion, or you've started asking the same questions over and over with very slight variations & the other person grows tired of answering them again just for you to ignore.

Now I know most people just laugh off your posts like that, but I'm always a big fan of poking the agitated know-it-all to watch them blow up for a little while anyway. You and Growler are so damn similar and predictable. It's entertaining and a bit like those Messin' with Sasquatch commercials.

Holy shit! That's the most accurate post I've read on this site in years.

POY Candidate!!

I can only speak from experience. I know when I was in college, then the military, I could play basketball for no less than 4 hours straight. Many hours at Offutt AFB were spent running full court games on many courts. I was in damn good shape, just as most college players are. Yes, I would fly 8 to 16 hour missions as well.

I could easily play basketball all day/night long without any problem. Could I do it now? Hell no!!! I see no reason why this is a concern. These guys are in great shape and are young. Most of us are past our prime in physical endurance, meanwhile most these players are in their prime physically.

And your posting style is to avoid making substantive posts with analysis. And I see you're unable or afraid to answer the series of questions I asked you.

Your posting style is also to post endless stats--sometimes good and sometimes meaningless--and then draw conclusions that are unsupported by your stats.

My initial comments were that UM should develop a bit more post depth, in case of foul trouble or injury, and be prepared not to play the 2 guards as much in so many games, as well as be ready for possible foul trouble or injury. Initially, my comments were not based on stats, or in comparison to any other team. UM worn down late in the conference tourney last year, and let EWU come from behind and beat them. GrizRule seems to agree with me that he is concerned about post depth. I doubt that UM can win the tourney is they are playing the 2 guards close to 40 minutes per game.

Did you attend the conference championship game last year, and see the Griz appear to tire and allow EWU to come back and beat the Griz? Playing for 4 hours or 40 minutes is not the point. The point is how effective players are if they start to tire, or if the other team is more fresh or less tired.

EWU played their starters more in the 3 tournament games than the Griz did. The Griz played their bench more (and more players) than EWU did in the 3 tournament games.

If the Griz wore out then why didn't EWU wear out and why do you seem to think they were "fresh" or "less tired"? Both teams played 3 games in 3 days and the Griz utilized their bench more than EWU.

The Griz just got in a funk, EWU went 6 of their last 7 shooting and the Griz turned it over 4 times in the last 4 minutes of the game. As DeCuire said after the game the Griz kind of came unraveled against the pressure that EWU threw at them in the last 5 mins. That's the story right there. We've seen that happen a few times this year too where the Griz get in a funk even early in games and turn it over several times in a row.

And before you ask, yes I was at the game. I don't think I've missed a home Griz BB game in around 20 years. I've also attended not only tournament games the Griz were playing in but many tournament games between other teams hosted here in Missoula.

Even before I went to every game I was going to the games very frequently going back to the late 80s when Tinkle, Tony Reed, and KC McGowan played. KC McGowan's face used to get very red when he played... too bad you weren't around back then to let Mike Montgomery and Stew Morrill know that they were playing him too many minutes

Yes, but the Griz wore out. I don't care what EWU did. I care what UM did, and UM lost. UM didn't defend as well as it should have late in the game, and turnovers are often result late in games because one team tires and the other team doesn't. Unraveling with pressure late in games can also come from one team tiring, and the other team not tiring.

Great, assumed you were there and came to games generally. In the last 2 tourneys in Missoula, I watched all of the mens and womens games. As I've mentioned before, I've gone to all of the UM"s ncaa games at least of the last 3 times they were in the tourney. Went to the last women's ncaa tourney game too. Have gone to several of the away Big Sky tourneys too. How about you? Do you travel?

I went to my first Big Sky conference game in 1961. How about you? Some Gonzaga games before that. Met Frank Burgess.

PR, the only people who know for sure if they were tired or not, are the coaches and players. I did not see players with hands on knees bending over on a consistent basis in that game. I am not on either side of this argument and remaining neutral. For the sake of this board, I am not going into this with you. I have learned over the years, when people disagree with you, a thread takes a turn for the worse. I am so sick of hijacked threads on EGRIZ (not saying you specifically). Football threads get it all the time by/from various posters. I really am trying my best to not get into silly disagreements with some posters here.

From my experience playing and coaching, I feel each player has their own threshold when they are tired. I was a player who could play ball for a long time without fatigue. Then again, I grew up spending most my time outdoors playing sports all day. So my body was used to it. I have coached players who were capable of playing full games, if needed. I also coached players and had teammates who honestly got tired after a few minutes on the court.

To me, our guards are usually the quickest and most energetic against most opponents from start to finish. As for Breunig and Krslovic, I feel they get worn down easier due to them being banged on more inside, and often undersized. If Breunig were to play the perimeter defensively more often, I feel he has the energy to play more. Krslovic, plays so hard, and gets worn out easier. Gfelller is tough read for me. Some games he appears to have a lot of energy, other games he appears worn down quicker. As for Oguine, Wright, and Dunn (when healthy), I feel they are more than capable of performing consistently with a lot of court minutes.

Energy and being tired can vary game to game. I feel the players that need monitored the most are Krslovic, Gfeller, and Breunig as for our main rotation players. As for Dunn, Oguine, and Wright, more often than not, they can be pushed to further limits. Yes, there will be occasional game when for whatever reasons they are not as energetic. I feel Travis and his staff have a very good read on this team. I feel the biggest concern from last year and this year is finding consistent perimeter shooting. Very seldom do the GRIZ lose a game because of too many players being fatigued.

Oh boy, where is this thread going to head now?

By reading this thread I've basically learned that only Grizzly players get tired when they play 32+ minutes, but other teams do not even if they play more minutes...and...PR once met Frank Burgess...

I guess it makes sense as long as you've played the game...or something like that.
