Good luck to Owens. I’m pretty sure I knew about this before he did.

Oh, don't act so smug. I was going to tell you but knew you already knew.
Did you know that? :ugeek:

I admittedly didn't have the piece of the puzzle.

The portal, play 4 and still redshirt, and the early signing period have caused a huge change. Personally, I don't think it is helping anything. Kids aren't patient. They who aren't willing to put in their time and the work to earn a starting job can just transfer to greener pastures. To find out it usually isn't greener.
Jensen and Jeremy Calhoun have not found such greener pastures.

I heard Ifanse was the next to hit to portal.

That’s actually pretty legit. Following the Chris Murray school progression is what I heard and doesn’t like Bozeman on top of it.
You’re shitting! That’d be a huge loss.

I was kidding about my “Troy to Pac12” comment. I’m not kidding on Ifanse.

Hmmm. I haven't heard that one. He is happy at MSU though, had this to say yesterday about the commitment to run the ball and using a committee to do it: "“I love it,” Ifanse said. “I like it because then come second half or fourth quarter or crunch-time moments, all of us are still fresh. Not just one person is taking the pounding.”

We shall see. Let’s just say if he is still a bobcat next year, there will be many surprised people.... and I’m not talking about over here

well, they no longer have you in their team's fanbase, so that has to count for something.

but then again, based on your posts you certainly think of them often (at least jensen), so i guess they didn't totally escape.

Going into the portal doesn't seem to show the level of dedication to the program that most coaches want.

Oh?

Sneed? Rice? Mallory? Babros? Vinyard? Humphrey?

Players transfer for a variety of reasons. We benefit from transfers more than we don't. I try not to deride the players transferring. We never mind when they transfer here.

I'm pretty sure he's referencing entering the portal and then deciding to stay.

Yup. PT is one of those posters who just wants to disagree with most everything I write.

Question- and I really don't know.
If an athlete signs to play one sport but then elects to move to another sport and stay with the same school, do they need to enter the portal or can they just switch?

I realize that the portal is for athletes who are looking to transfer schools, but what about sports?

Owens sister was a phenom out of high school. Truly one of the most gifted athletes to come out of Montana. Her career did not have the trajectory that was anticipated. I hope his situation is different. Not sure that will be the case.

So if he was to play both here, do both sports get a schollie counted against them or just football?

So, interestingly enough, (my info is a decade old, btw), FBS is a headcount sport, as is DI BB. FCS, to my knowledge, is not a headcount sport. IDK about entering the portal to add a sport at the same school, but, hypothetically, a dual sport athlete at Montana could take a BB a scholarship and free up a FB one. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong!

I believe in this case, and am fairly certain in all cases, it would be considered a football scholarship and if he was on partial, it would have to become a full scholarship.

Got it. I thought FCS wasn’t default FB on duals due to the fact FCS allows partials in the first place. Thanks.

Do players ever enter the portal and then end up staying and playing? Would seem to be bridge-burning.

p/r is right about the bridge burned.......any coach that I have ever played for or worked with would also take this view.....this hurts as Owens was a Sulser 2.0 in many ways however he should do what is right for him and his family.....I would be SHOCKED if he were a part of Hauck's team next year.

I would say by entering the portal there is zero chance.

I would find it difficult for a coach to be willing to allocate a scholarship (good for an academic year) to a person wanting to test the waters elsewhere. Good luck and so long....
