Owens into transfer portal

From my understanding, this boils down to the kid just missed basketball. I also heard that his initial intention was looking at Frontier schools that had recruited him previous, but as the process played out, the walk-on opportunity presented itself.

Going into the portal doesn't seem to show the level of dedication to the program that most coaches want.

Oh?

Sneed? Rice? Mallory? Babros? Vinyard? Humphrey?

Players transfer for a variety of reasons. We benefit from transfers more than we don't. I try not to deride the players transferring. We never mind when they transfer here.

While these names have, for the most part, panned out for us, no coach in America is excited about the idea of getting transfers whether it be Juco or otherwise, especially without some type of previous relationship. Another point is the desperate need for OL and Corners. They the most difficult positions to recruit. They're hard to get and evaluate out of high school, and everyone throws money at them if they have a good season at a JUCO. I would assume that's the reason they spent money on the OL you listed as well as Roland and Tolliver. You have to take risks at those positions, but the idea of doing it doesn't excite a coach.

Sneed was with them at UNLV. Rice was with Tucker Meyer at Rocky. They recruited Vinyard to UNLV. There may or may not have been prior relationships with the other 3, but I guarantee they had to do their homework.

Why would one need to enter the transfer portal to walk on at another school in a different sport? Couldn't he just leave Montana and enroll at msu as a walkon BB player?

That's a great question, EG!

Edit: Thanks for the info, box & PR!

Who cares? 5 pages of replies on a kid that has not played even 1 official snap for the Griz? I like the reply "next guy up", or even better "don't let the door hit you on your way out"

I remember the shock on this board when he committed....was kind of a foregone conclusion he was going to play BB...

Starred on 3 of West High's most average basketball teams in years. Don't see him as a contributing D1 hoopster but guess you never know.

I just don't see Jessie becoming a star Bball player unless in the NAIA. Guess we will never know about football at Montana. Man he sure did look good in the East West Shrine game or Montana & ND. I do have to give MSU credit for getting him of our football team!

Agree completely.

Good luck to the young man and thank you for pushing our CB's in practise, wouldn't have gotten the award if he hadn't. (I went into Miller Hall first floor in the fall of '85; 38 guys, 5 of us graduated in 4 years, not quitters just found different paths to success)

Do players ever enter the portal and then end up staying and playing? Would seem to be bridge-burning.

Think there was a UDub qb, that some had transferring to UM. Related to Cy Sirmon I think. Cousin maybe. He stayed there as the backup this year.

Anyway you look at it, the kid is heck of athlete, watched played play both FB and BB in High School, empressive to watch. One of the guys who excelled at both. I was suprised he committed to play FB, like most probably thought BB was going to be his path in College.

Sadly, for Owens, there is better talent in front of him right now. If he was patient, kept grinding. Jace Lewis, Marc Mariani, Dave Dickenson, kids with heart, desire, who are willing to do what it takes to be elite and help the team. How many “Great” Montana kids used to hold out for bigger better offers only to come back, not begging, but hella humbler after those big schools didn’t pan out?

He’s a good player, but after leaving Montana and moving to Vegas, then Texas, He would be an average player in a lower division, unless he was willing to be a Mariani, Lewis, Anderson, Harris, Tripp. That’s not bias. That’s a fact. These kids need reality checks.

He is a WR sitting behind Susler, JLM, Akem, Toure? C’mon man, put in the work, earn your turn, and then be a star. He needs to learn he isn’t entitled to anything because he was something two years ago.
