I wonder if he knows there’s a highway named after him down here in Alabama. There’s a museum about him also. I’ve never been there but I’m sure it’s full of all the great things he did in high school. They probably haven’t had time yet to put up the Scout Team award display. I’m sure they want to do it just right.

I don't think so either, he was name scout team player of the year for offense at the Montana grizzly banquet recently. Montana's coaches must have seen alot of upside to him.

I don’t believe he had any D1 offers in hoops, just naia. So now a walk on opportunity presented with cats so he took it.

This poses a question then....what are the rules on recruiting a kid already on scholarship at another school? Did Sprinkle reach out to him first or was Owens just lucky enough to make a call at the right time and ask about a potential opportunity? Conspiracy theories abound...but mostly just in my head.

Do players ever enter the portal and then end up staying and playing? Would seem to be bridge-burning.

p/r is right about the bridge burned.......any coach that I have ever played for or worked with would also take this view.....this hurts as Owens was a Sulser 2.0 in many ways however he should do what is right for him and his family.....I would be SHOCKED if he were a part of Hauck's team next year.

My immediate reaction was to totally agree, and I do as it applies to Hauck.

However, this is the new reality and coaches will need to adapt. That includes the fact a coach who accepts a talented player coming out of the portal knows that the player has already bailed on one program. That must take some adjustment on the part of the staff. It's a new world out there.

IDK about entering the portal to add a sport at the same school, but, hypothetically, a dual sport athlete at Montana could take a BB a scholarship and free up a FB one. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong!

I believe in this case, and am fairly certain in all cases, it would be considered a football scholarship and if he was on partial, it would have to become a full scholarship.

That is the case, one of the reasons many football coaches love track guys.

Texas generally has 4-5 burners on their football team that are at Texas on track schollies.

My confusion was that I thought FCS could get around this since they are allowed to offer partial FB scholarships whereas FBS is not allowed to do so.

I believe this is an NCAA requirement that mostly has to do with APR.

I too wondered this. Good question. I suppose the portal might just free up a scholarship athlete to talk to another school, about any sport.
