our football program: prisoner of nepotism

Some people want a "outsider" for UM Football head coach.
Some people want an UM Football head coach with a historical understanding of the UM tradition.
Some people want a UM Football head coach that hates MSU more.
Some people want a UM Football head coach that throws the ball every down.
Some people want a UM Football head coach that focuses on a strong rushing attack.
Some people want a UM head coach that recruits more Montana kids.
Some people want a UM head coach that recruits more out-of-state Athletes.
Some fans want a coach with Don Read and Tommy Lee's gameplanning brain, Bobby Hauck's recruiting ability, Robin Pflugrad's playcalling, Mike Breske's defensive scheme, Joe Glenn's motivational speaking and piano playing, and Larry Donovan's hair.
Maybe you can't make everybody happy.

I cannot believe after all these years, there are people that STILL think Brian Kelly was passed over for Bobby Hauck! LOL. Kelly signed a contract extension at GVSU BEFORE Bobby was announced as the head coach at UM. In fact, according to his historical bio on GVSU's website, and a quick search of when BH was announced as head coach, it shows Kelly signed the extension a full month BEFORE BH was hired.

Also, what exactly IS a national search? That gets thrown around an awful lot on this board. Do people honestly believe that applications and resume's that aren't postmarked with a Montana zip code are thrown in the garbage or never opened? Come on man.

...Even as an assistant under Neuheisel, the always-prepared Hauck knew how to sell. When Neuheisel needed to close the deal on a recruit, he sent in Hauck.

So when Hauck had to sell himself in an interview for the Montana position, he had a plan. Two other candidates were Brian Kelly (now Notre Dame's coach) and Robin Pflugrad (now Montana's head man)...

havgrizfan -- If you can provide any article to show Kelly withdrew from consideration, then I'd be interested in reading it. Until then I'll continue to believe Kelly was a candidate for the job and that Hauck was selected over him.

google search revealed this egriz post which cites a KECI story and then an official release from Grand Valley State: http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?t=856&p=5783" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That release was dated 12/18/2002

Hauck was introduced as head coach 12/20/2002

Well, one of the beauties of getting older, past 70, and being a UM fan, is that you can do all of the above and Mick Delaney has proven that. Now, doing it all at the same time is another matter, entirely.

I am very late to this party but I just want to say that I reject the starting premise of the thread.

Any program with a long and rich tradition looks within first. If you've sucked for quite awhile...that's when you look to go another direction.

The most prominent example I can cite is that there is an actual term of endearment used in Ann Arbor when they look at candidates - he's a "Michigan Man".

So far there have been 5 announced coaches on Coach Harsin's staff at BSU. All 5 have played at BSU and one is the OC and one is the DC. He must have done a national search and these are the only coaches he could find so far. :D

Beauty post! Thank you for bringing up memories of Larry Donovan's hair, that thing might have been bullet proof as well as wind resistant.

Wyoming is certainly a good example. They recruited "outside" for Joe Glenn. He had the record, for sure.

Warning: "not all moving parts are interchangeable."
