O'Day and Pflu FIRED!!!

The timing of it is that most of us have already bought our season tickets, since the first deadline is basically tomorrow. Since I paid for mine just yesterday; I can't help but to think the ticket deadline and this firing decision are simply a coincidence.

Oh, BS. They're not 7th graders. They put on their big boy pants just like you and me. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IN COLLEGE ATHLETICS when teams go awry. Elements of this team were out of fucking control and it was plainly obvious Pflugrad wasn't able/willing to deal with it. If I were president of UM, the last straw for me would have been his comments regarding Johnson when he was cleared to practice. At the very LEAST, know enough to just keep your mouth shut...but to go so over the top with effusive praise for a guy who's under a cloud of suspicion for RAPE...well that was just pure stupidity. Couple that with all the other off-field issues over the past 10-12 months and you've got a recipe for disaster.

My only surprise is what took Engstrom so long. Personally I think he's shown very little backbone throughout this. I'd have put a bullet in Pflu at the end of the season. There was certainly enough of a case to be made for that. Hell, had O'Day been willing to do THAT, he might still be employed.

I agree... but beating the Cats put a layer of icing on the cowpie. Looked good, but underneath was still a lot of siht.

So eerily similar to MSU's situation 6 years ago. How does Fields fire Kramer after beating the Griz, beating Colorado, winning a playoff game, etc. for a program that was finally on the rebound (in terms of W's and L's). How does O'Day fire Pflu after beating MSU convincingly, going to the semifinals, winning coach of the year, having program heading in the right direction (in terms of W's and L's).

Might have something in that maybe O'day not firing Pflu is why Jim is being dumped today as well?

I am pretty sure Hauck started assigning a lawyer to each new recruit and it carried over to Pflus regime....so JJ probably had his for a few years........................

O.k. that makes sense, but still, I think they'd be much better off to do this immediately after the report. It would have given people enough time to get behind a new staff and team and support them. Right or wrong, what happened today looks more to me like some kind of power play by the board of regents than a justified firing. Knowing nothing about the facts, I am probably completely wrong about that, but that is how it looks. Donors and supporters may now decide to show there support for Phlugrad and O'Day instead of the team by not supporting the team. That was one poorly worded sentence. Sorry. It could have been avoided by an immediate firing. Bad timing all around.

I don't think Engstrom comes out of this looking very good. I think his hand was forced by the regents, in which case he looks pretty spineless to me. If it was his decision, and it is justified, the smart move would be to give an explanation, at least to the satisfaction of those in the athletic dept. It doesn't look like he did that according to the quotes from Guffey and Sundberg.

As a side comment, I always wondered how\why JJ already had an attorney when the story broke.....clearly don't know much about that story at all.
