Note From Coach Stitt

CDAGRIZ said:
Dude got fired after a 7-4 season and a tenure riddled with injuries to the most important position on the field. He didn't have to say anything at all. What he did, and did not say, shows/proves a lot about him. I wish him a lot more luck than he received here.

Well said.

Indeed VERY class discussion and statement. Thank you for your contributions to Griz football and the University of Montana Coach Stitt. Best of fortunes to you and your family.

Well said. I’m not sure why some of our fans are acting like he was another Pat Kennedy. Coach Stitt lost two starting QBs in 3 years to broken legs. What are the odds? Not concussions or high ankles or whatever, but season ending events early in the season. He also got backup QBs up to high performance quickly. Kudus to Andrew Selle on this as well. They took a New QB to the no. 3 vote getter as freshman of the year. It’s been rehashed but I think he did a great job considering and ran things clean and right. His win over NDSU is one of the signature games I have seen since Washington dug that big hole behind Dahlberg Arena. I am a big fan of Coach Hauck and I am sure he will build on what he has inherited, which is a pretty sturdy program.

That was a very nice and heartfelt statement. Very well done. I didn't doubt that the non-renewal was hard on him and his family (and the assistants). However, you could really see that in his statement.

I liked him personally. I liked how he ran his QB Club meetings and how directly and honestly he talked.

While I can understand the reasons for non-renewal, and didn't think Haslam could renew if the Cat game was lost and no playoffs again (although I thought the Griz would win the game), I can other understand the other side, i.e. Stitt's and others (like CDA's) view.

His win over NDSU was one of the great wins in UM history, and incredibly exciting and historic (ESPN and lots of viewers and attention). My view is that he was very close to more wins and having more time to get back towards the top.

I wish him well. I believe he will be successful, if not very successful, in the future.

Good post. I agree.

Agreed with CDA. Class guy with a good football mind who I think will have more success in a coordinator/strategy type position. Maybe even find a better fit as a HC somewhere else. Coaching is a tough business and especially tough on the families who have to move around with them. Wish him and his family the best.

What a class guy. I briefly talked to him on a few occasions and he couldn't have been friendlier. I agree the scat game was the deal changer, but I also believe he had the team moving in the right direction. Best wishes to Coach Stitt and his family.

GO GRIZ!!!!

I liked Stitt and thought he was doing things right. In all his actions he acted with class and recruited STUDENT athletes. I believe he is a man of integrity and I wish him and his family well. That said, One win in two years over an inferior Cats team and we are not talking about the return of Hauck or his non-renewal.

CDA, PR, et al, are right on. Coach was a good guy who moved this program in a better direction. He was aa really good recruiter and good coach. Unfortunately he came to a program that isn't satisfied with good. At UM we expect greatness.

I have appreciated many of your posts over the years, but...this is not worthy of you. Drunk at the time?

Accident of birth, or a self made man?

He’s self made, no doubt.

And ironically, possibly the WORST thing he could have done was win that NDSU game right out of the gate.  After that, he was NEVER able to live up to the immediate lofty expectations laid before him.

Totally cool and like-able guy. Did a great job with student-athletes, especially on a personal level. Was building up the program with new HS kids. 3 years was not enough time to get HIS kids up to All-BSC level. They were only R-Sophomores, R-Freshman, and Redshirts last season; his final. You can't win championships or beat good teams with a roster like that, basically a frosh-more team playing against Varsity's!

Hauck will reap the benefit of these HS kids maturing, which will start this year now that they are R-Juniors, R-Sophomores and R-Freshman.

And watch out in 2019, when Stitt's recruits are R-Seniors, R-Juniors and R-Sophomores! Followed by Haucks R-Freshman, and Red-shirts. And sky is the limit in 2020 and beyond.

Best of luck, coach Stitt. And thank you!

The only negative from last season, along with losing to a bad msu team two years in a row and missing the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive year, was the fact that Stitt only beat 1 Non-Scholarship team and the rest were weak teams with losing records. No good win at all.

Lastly, I regret hiring a d coordinator that never figured out how to defend 3rd and 17.

I know you are joking but Stitt hired Semore so Stitt could have the defense he wanted. Semore designed his gameplans around what Stitt wanted out of the defense.
The gameplan wasn’t the problem....and it’s not what anyone has ever complained about.

There is never a defensive gameplan that calls for the kind of defenses that Semore put out there. The issue was that we played soft, predictable, and never executed.

They beat NAU when they were #9 in the fucking country using a 3rd string QB/converted H-back. Seriously, what does it take to have a “quality win” these days?

Don’t call 5700 out. It hurts his feelings.

Nothing that happened, and nothing that anyone can say will take away the absolute joy and elation I felt in Washington Grizzly Stadium when we beat NDSU, one of the top Griz memories I’ll ever have.

Thanks, coach.

Nothing that happened and nothing that anyone can say will take away the absolute disgust and hurt I felt in Washington Grizzly Stadium when we were beaten by a losing MSU team, then duplicated in Bozeman the following year. Memories that will be hard to forget even after coming years of better Griz football.
